Many of the prom dress websites also have dresses suitable for black tie events.

Macys usually has pretty nice stuff. Sometimes Cache has longer formal dresses that are pretty.

    Oooo.....love this question.

My personal favorites are Ann Taylor Loft, Nordstrom's, The Limited, White House Black Market, and Zara. You can buy a decent priced dress and really jazz it up with accessories.

If you are talking gowns.....I would look at Bloomingdale's, Macy's, Nordstrom's etc.

I agree with White House Black Market.  They are have some great stuff, especially for more formal affairs.

@HappilyEverAfter54: I love JCPenney's dresses. I like the American Living line alot. I've bought a bunch of dresses online without trying them on in the store. They've all fit well too.

anywhere and everywhere.  First I'd probably hit up the department stores as they are most likely to have sales, (Macys, Nordy's Bloomies).  BCBG has a great selection of longer dresses and if you have an outlet near you, it's a goldmine.

Maybe try Rent the Runway? I plan on trying them out for a couple of weddings I have to go to this summer (black tie one included).

I definitely go to the store, especially for a long dress (I'm 5'2"). I love Nordstrom and Macy's!

I searched for months and months for a reception dress for my wedding to no avail!

Stores I looked at Macys, Penneys, Lord & Taylor, Nordstrom, Saks, etc etc. All the big fancy department stores.

And of course Ideeli, RueLaLa, etc

P.S. I've never been to a black tie wedding either! Would LOVE to go to one and get all gussied up!

I'd probably go to Nordstrom's for a black tie appropriate dress.
