My mom recently lost a ton of weight – like over 200lbs and she’s been keeping it off.
She’s in her mid fifties and dresses so frumpy as if she’s still trying to hide her weight. I want to take her out and get her a few nice outfits. Something with some new england style – stripe shirts, nice crop khakis and a few sweaters.
Does your mom have style? Where does she shop?
Ann Taylor? J. Crew? Lord & Taylor?

@skippydarling: Hehe Im not much help, but my mum has perfect casual style, she generally chooses well but can sometimes make a few mistakes 😛 But for some reason she has really bad “nice” clothing choices, like lotsa frilly bits, floral prints, clothing that doesn’t fit nicely.
If you have any good ideas on how to approach your mummy dearest, do tell me, I can’t figure out how but I really wanna help her show off her figure! (She’s also in the midst of losing weight!)

Lol, I think you just described me… well the New England part anyhow. Very relaxed gal I am most of the time (although I do enjoy dressing up for some aspects of my life as well)
When I am in the USA, I like to shop at:
- Lord & Taylor
- JC Penney
- J. Crew
- LL Bean
- Lands End
All companies we don’t have here in Canada. BUT some of them now offer on-line shopping to Canada… and a few even have FREE shipping (wooohooo)
Hope this helps,
EDIT TO ADD – and here is one we do have in Canada, out of New England… Talbots.
Anyhow between all these stores, I usually find whatever I need. Be it Shorts, Ts, Tops, Sweaters, Cords, Dress pants, Skirts, or fancier things. I still buy quite a few of my clothes in Canada, but for the most part there is more selection in the US (you guys have 10x the amount of population we do) and prices are pretty good…

My mom really likes Macy’s and Nordstrom.

None of the above. I dont think my mom owns any clothes that cost over $60. She mostly shops at JcPenney, Sears and Catos.

@skippydarling: My mom is almost sixty and she loves bebe, ann taylor, white house black market, j. crew, neiman marcus (but only during a sale), and forever 21. My mom is fairly petite though and dresses a bit flashy. My Mother-In-Law shops at Macy’s, LL bean and Marshalls and is in her mid sixties.

@skippydarling: My mom is in her late 40s, size 10-12, and she shops at J Crew, BODEN (online), Eddie Bauer, and LOFT. She also gets some of her more bargain-y stuff at Marshalls.

My mom is 60 and she loves Coldwater Creek.

My mom has a great sense of style when I am visiting I often borrow her clothes. She is 60 and very fit. 5’5″ or 5.6″ and 128 lbs. Depends on the brand but she is most often a size 4.
She buys from all sorts of places but I know she often will pick items up from
- TJ Max, Marshalls etc (you have to pick through the racks. Its not all going to be great)
- White House Black Market
- She will stop in many stores and pick up random things. She doesnt have a set of stores she always shops in. Especially now that she is retired.

@This Time Round: Not sure where you live but there is a J. Crew outlet in a brand new mall outside Toronto. There’s also a few other American retailers in that mall who have no other stores in the country. They’re also opening up a couple of Nordstroms in the area (actually they’re taking over two Sears locations, I think). And LL Bean ships for free to Canada via their online store (according to my mom).
My mom has been shopping at Target a lot, now that we have them here, because they’re reasonable and they have the kind of clothes that she likes. She also likes Sears and The Bay (which is like JC Penney). And she seems to like H&M too, lol.

TO @musical-lady: lol, aaaah yes, you have to be talking about Yorkdale Mall… my FAVOURITE frickin mall in all of Canada !!
I am in Eastern Ontario, but I go to Yorkdale whenever I am in the Toronto area… American Retailer Heaven… Ann Taylor – Bombay – Coach – Crate & Barrel – J Crew – Kate Spade – Louis Vuitton – Michael Kors – Pottery Barn – Victory Secret – White House / Black Market – and Williams Sonoma
Hard to resist for sure !!
Lol, now you got me wanting to plan my next weekend getaway into the city.
I heard Nordstrom is coming to Canada… cannot wait !!
Enjoy shopping at Target when I am in the US… haven’t been a Canadian one as of yet.
And I regularly buy from US Retailers like LL Bean over the internet (and Yes they have FREE Shipping)… and a few states now in Northern New York as well, for those weekends I just have to make a cross-border shopping trip.
Agree with your mom on some of her other choices… Sears is a great place to pick up nice inexpensive dresses (miss Dress Barn up here), but other than that I don’t buy much there. The Bay is good if you happen to have a well managed store in your area (I find them hit and miss one store the other… much like I find the same with JC Penney in the US)
H&M has some cute stuff… altho their demographic tends to be younger… but a great store for accessories !!

My mom usually shops at Dillard’s and Ann Taylor.
For what style you say you’re looking for, I would start at J. Crew.
Congrats to your mom for the amazing weight loss!!
