We live in Nelson but are getting married in New Plymouth (where my family is)
Yahoo for a NZ board!
I'm in Auckland, married in Auckland and honeymooned in Rarotonga. Veggie - you aren't too far from me-I'm at the very south of Auckland.
Helu! I live in Wellington...but we're getting married at the top of the South island. Where did everyone get there dresses from? I'm finding that prices over here are...pricey.
I got mine at CC Ward (bridal shop in New Plymouth) and have had to stop myself from bidding on dresses on Trade Me (that I *may* like better). Most of the bridal shops seem to be excessively expensive - but that's all we've got to go with.... Unless you want to order from overseas, take your chances with a 'made to fit' from China (not keen!) or go to the sale racks in stores?
I got mine through the States and it was quite pricey in nz huh! I had some time up my sleave and a trip to the States lined up for a holiday so it all worked out. I refused to pay what NZ supplier were charging Kiwis - about a 250% mark up on what american brides pay!
nzbride, that's so true! I tried on some Casablanca dresses in Auckland when I was last there, and they were charging upwards of $2800, I later found out that I could order from an American store (shipping was around $100) and it would cost only aruond $1,100 upwards...um what?
The main issue is that most dress places over here don't stock brands that American ones do. How I wish wish wish there was a Claire Pettibone outlet so I could try one on then bid on a second hand dress website for one!
Renee, that's great that you found one over here, I've been looking at Brides on Thorndon but again, the prices are so over inflated! Which designer did you end up with, or is it a secret ;)
@ WellyKiwi, mine retailed for just under 3k in nz when in reality I got if for just over 1k (NZD) through the states! that is 2K that can now go ont eh bar tab! haha
@WellyKiwi - is it awful that I actually don't know??? Going for a fitting next week though as I'm going to visit family up there - will find out haha
I ended up buying mine off of a weddingbee classified. Crazy, huh? If anyone needs help with American sizes let me know. They are quite different than NZ sizes.
Im in good old Palmy North- Miss Veggie you will practically be my neighbour after your wedding!
@reneeheartssam- good to see a Nelson girl on here :)
Earrings- When I get back we are totally having a meet up!
LOL I'd been wondering where in NZ Earrings and Veggie were from... thanks guys!
@ Earrings and Veggie
I'm getting married near both of you! Apiti, which is 50 mins North of Palmy :-) Its called Makoura Lodge and in the middle of the Ruahine ranges. Where you getting married Earings??
Makoura lodge is beautiful. I know the daughter of the old owner, got a horse off her
horses name was Makoura Matata!
I'm from Dunedin
@nzbride: Im going back to Nelson (where I was born) for the wedding :P If I was getting married near Palmy I would definitely take a look at Makoura lodge...it sounds beautiful :)
Yay for Nelson, would love to have the wedding here but all our friends with kids (read: hard to travel) live around the 'Naki so we thought it would be easier there, PLUS it is my hometown :)
Where are you getting married in Nelson earrings?
Oh my goodness, where have I been??? TWO NZ bees?
Hi Ms. Veggie! I'm sorry I never replied to your last note. I'm back now, though.
Hi Earrings! Nice to make your acquaintance.
I'm in Hamilton, and I rebelled against the crazy wedding dress prices and chose to alter a $100-ish ball dress instead. It wasn't my dream dress, but the $3000 dresses weren't any more 'me' either. It's a good thing NZ weddings tend to be more relaxed and low-key than I gather happens in the US, because the price difference for being in this corner of the world is exasperating.
I was born and raised in good old Welly and we are getting married here. I am just starting the wedding dress search and am shocked at the prices of dresses in NZ! Good to know we can order from the states and ship over - may have to look into it.
@nzgirl:yes, dresses definitely seem more pricey here! Which is why I ended up getting mine from the states. I've heard of a few nz brides getting theirs from Australia as well. Good luck with the search!
Christchurch here, but we are getting married in Hanmer Springs. So glad we booked there, and it was before the earthquake - so hoping especially a year from now it will be a shake free day :)
Not many bridal stores left here, but did notice the dress prices here are CRAZY!! Looking online the difference between US and NZ prices is ridiculous. A lot of designers have restricted shipments so that US retailers can not ship out of the country - like Maggie Sottero, Pronovias, Enzoani. I am lucky I go to the US a couple of times a year for work, and as long as the sale originates in the States and they dont ship here it is OK. Of course second hand dresses don't have that same restriction...
If you buy a dress from the states you can get a virtual address from shipito.com have the dress sent there and they will forward from USA to NZ - its not that expensive either, often saving a lot compared to the cost of the dress in NZ.
hey kiwis! i joined the board yesterday even though ive been lurking around for a number of months :) and i was happy to discover the new zealand board! yay! i live in hamilton :)

Oops sorry guys, pressed send too many times! Lol
Hello fellow kiwi! Just found this board and so excited!!
We're from Chch but currently working in Welly, so will be getting married in Chch!
Btw if anyone's getting married in Chch, there's this new venue we've just booked called Hampton Lea Gardens: absolutely amazing place!
The dresses ARE ridiculously priced here, I suppose that's NZ for you, everything's over priced and there's nothing much we can do about it unless we bring in Chinese-manufactured dresses :(
I'm lucky I'm going over to Taiwan in a few months and I'm getting mine custom made for around $1000 NZD! (And that's considered expensive there!) And I can't believe here we have to PAY just to try own SAMPLE dresses. That's why I went to Avon Bridal in Chch when I was down coz they don't charge anything for trying on gowns. (And there's a whole rack of gowns for under $1000 NZD at their shop if you're popping by!)

Hooray for our new board!
Miss Veggie here. Right now we live in Raglan (on the west coast of the north island), but we just bought a house in Whanganui and will be moving there after the wedding. Where do all the other NZ bees live?
