You picked good stores. It usually depends on where most of your guests life. In the town where I am getting married, there isn't a Macy's... but I hope people will go online to buy my china!!! If you know someone will at least check out your registry online, then perhaps you're ok.
I'm registered at Macy's, CB2, and Target.
BED BATH AND BEYOND BECAUSE THEY GIVE CASH BACK ON ANYTHING YOU DECIDE YOU DO NOT WANT!!!!!!!!!!! I MAXED MINE OUT THERE AND ALSO SELECTED BLOOMIES. GOOD LUCK
Macy's (for China/luggage), Target (for random things) and Crate & Barrel (all kitchen stuff, bedding and simply awesome things! it's my new obsession)
BBB and Macy's! BBB is fantastic, they have great customer service, cash back for whatever you don't want, and the selection is just as good as anywhere else (and cheaper!).
Not to mention they have pretty much all of the nice china from the dept stores like Macy's and the BEST part is that your guests can use coupons on EVERYTHING (including the china!!!)
When we went to register there was only 30 min left until closing time but the stafff told us to take our time b/c they would be there for another 1.5hrs, so as long as we weren't purchasing anything we could browse. It was so nice!
macy's, pottery barn, and ws. and a honeymoon registry for our friends and shower gifts.
Oh, I love Viva Terra. I get their catalogs - do they have actual stores?
Lowes has a gift registry?!
BB&B, Macy's, C&B -- real original.
My mother also wants me to register at Target b/c she think BB&B is too expensive! I was like, wtf, have you been in there? They have the same prices as Target. When I finally did break down and start a small registry at Target it was such a major pain that she and I both agreed to leave it out.
Yes, Lowe's has a gift registry, but you have to do it online (they do not have scanner guns to go through the store with - at least not at the Lowe's we tried).
As for Target, I have heard not great things about registering there. They have a sketchy return policy because they require a receipt after you return two things without a receipt in one year. I have also heard that Target is not very good about updating the registry (whether it's because people purchase in store and forget to tell them to mark it on the registry or it's Target's fault, I don't know), but people end up with doubles of things off of their registry and then they cannot return them without a receipt. BB&B is the way to go in my mind! Plus, you can use the coupons they send in the mail on almost everything in the store.
Yes, Lowe's has a "gift and project" registry.

I have heard it is not quite as user-friendly as BB&B, but then who is? And we don't need as much kitchen and bath stuff as if we were just starting out, but we seriously want to replace every light fixture in the house, and none of the bathrooms have medicine cabinets or shelves (one doesn't even have towel bars!!) and we would really, really love a free standing kitchen island, but a big one - and they have some really nice "kitchen furniture." Oh, and I desparately need a new dishwasher.
I don't know if Viva Terra has any actual stores, but I love them so much that I figured I'd add it anyway =) I really hope people buy from there though, I like the few things there more than anything else!
I've heard of a lot of people having the problems you mentioned with Target, Jaime, but I've also known a lot of people that got through fine. The convenience finally convinced me.
I didn't do BB&B because their quality seems to vary a lot among their products, and I didn't want to have to do any of my registries in person =P
Bloomingdales! Awesome service and selection!
I refused to go to Macy's so Bloomingdales was a nice alternative.
Thanks for the info about Target. I have shopped from their gift registries before, and it is actually nice because they give you the aisle number for each item so you don't have to guess. I'm just not sure if we want enough stuff from Target that's not also available at BB&B to make it worth our time - but if their return policy is not good, maybe I can convince mom its not a great idea.
Peihan, you crack me up! I just want the scanning gun. If I start doing things online I will just have another thing to stay up waaaay to late doing on the computer. I do like the option of being able to update the registry online, since I don't trust our capability to get it right the first time.
i tried to register at Macy's but hated the website and have heard horror stories about their poor customer service...
and then i found out that bed bath and beyond also has a great selection of fine china, which is what i wanted to register for at macy's anyway.
so we're probably registering at BB&B and Pottery Barn.
I'd really love to register at Cost Plus --- but it doesn't look like they have a registry.
Oh, I love Cost Plus. I miss them lots and lots, as there is not one where I live now.
My Lowe's confirms that they have no scanner gun in the store option.
But BB&B has no fabulous overhead lighting. So, there you are. The people at our local store were actually very helpful on the phone, and indicated that if we wanted to go around the store and write down item numbers (so we can look at actual objects instead of pictures) they would be happy to do all the computer entry for us for those items, and then we could add items online as well. They also seem very sad about their lack of scanner gun. They can print out the registry information in the store for people who come in and ask.
I have to agree that the customer service for the Target registry is really bad. I was at a shower last year and the bride got some duplicate items from her registry at Target because they did not update her list. The gift givers were a little embarrassed and their return policy is very stingy.
We are using alternativegiftregistry.org for most of our stuff since we are trying to support local shops and artists as much as possible. We also registered at BBB for some stuff b/c 1) its easy for people and 2) we want to update our mismatched stuff.
Target=bad! Not only do people have problems with duplicate items, but they also only allow so many returns AND I have heard that you must exchange the item for another item in the same department. You are also only allowed so many returns, they keep track of that with your driver's license number. I love Target, but I will not be registering there.
We are registered at:
Crate and Barrel-"fine" china and everyday dinnerware and other misc.
Fortunoff-crystal glasses, vases, etc.
BB&B-random cookware and kitchenware
Pottery Barn-bath stuff
I like random things from everywhere...I couldn't just pick one place.
I figure if we don't get it for gifts I still get the completion discount.
So far the customer service at all have been wonderful.
BB&B, Macy's and Crate and Barrel. Have to say my least favorite has been BB&B.
Target
Z Gallerie
Sur La Table
Crate & Barrel
i *might* add macys at request of my mother
Well, being in Canada and not lucky enough to have BBB, Macy's, Bloomingdale's, C&B, Sephora (I know totally not related to registering, but still not lucky enough to have one).... oh I could go on forever about our lack of options, and its not like I live in small town canada, I live in Vancouver! Anyways, back to the topic at hand we are registering at the Bay (read Canada's version of Macy's) and probably a furniture store... we know no one is going to buy us a new desparately needed couch to cuddle on, but are hoping for gift certificates to go towards a large ticket item.
Has anyone else done this? I am a little weary that its takcy registering for gift cards, but I suppose its not all that different than a honeymoon registry.
So megs08, what did you not like about BB&B? Is there something I should be watching out for?
Suzanno,
No, I think your experience should be fine @ BB&B depending on your location. We chose to register mid-week, after work and we were both really tired. We had two people helping us and it just felt really uncomfortable. I think the head person was training the new guy that night. They kept asking cheesy questions to my FI and I. They also tried to push unnneeded items to us from some catalog of bridal stuff they carry. One major plus was that they brought us a beverage mid-way through when our energy level was really failing. I honestly think that if we would have gone to register @ BB&B when we weren't so tired and unenthousiastic the experience would have been better. By the time we registered at Macy's we were both enjoying it more b/c we knew what to expect, our consultant didn't pressure us to register for things we didn't need, she encouraged us to take a break for lunch and come back to complete the registry and they had bedding and linen items that we liked better than @ BB&B. We did return to the BB&B after the wedding shower and their customer service was great!
Hope that helps!
I wish I'd thought of BB&B farther ahead of time... right now we're registered at Crate & Barrel and Target.
Thanks megs08! I am trying to get started registering very soon, as I am hoping we can do one store a weekend - maybe head out around 11:00, take a couple of hours, and then go to for a late lunch and start drinking. I can't even imagine trying to go after work, or in one of those multi-store marathon sessions. We would be so unpleasant to be around. Breaking for lunch in the middle is a great idea, and I bet you think of more stuff while you're sitting and relaxing and eating.
We're registering at Crate & Barrel and BB&B. CB has lots of the kitchen stuff that I want. BB&B has everything AND they give you cash back for returns, including full price even when the person that bought it for you used a coupon.
I was also going to register at Macy's but I have heard lots of awful things about them, one of my friends has made it her life's mission to keep people away from Macy's after her horrible experience with them. They sent her letters saying that things that people had bought her were canceled when they were really just backordered. Plus they were not helpful with getting things from other stores and don't have free shipping.
Bloomingdale's - I cannot say enough about how wonderful the people and service at Bloomie's is. EXCEPTIONAL! And they had a few exclusive items that weren't anywhere else.
Home Depot - For gift cards only.
C&B - Because some people don't have bloomie's near them and/or want to shop in store. But I think I only found 2 things I wanted from there.
We're going to do:
Macys - luggage, china, fine glassware
BB&B - nearly everything else
Williams-Sonoma - great bakeware and a few select, unique items
Has anyone registered through Anthropologie? I haven't scene any china I can get excited about, except at Anthropologie.

We were thinking Macy's, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Lowe's. My mom thinks we should add Target or JC Penney(?) She has some idea that not everybody can get to one of the three stores we picked. I do have some relatives that live out in the middle of nowhere, but I'm pretty sure they internet shop. And I thought Macy's and Lowe's were pretty much everywhere, I guess. Am I missing something?
I would also kind of love to do Williams-Sonoma, but I wonder if they really have that much that isn't also at BB&B. Plus we don't even have one in the town where I live. Would it be odd to register at a store we don't have? I do have friends who are coming from places that have Williams-Sonoma (and friends who I know internet shop!)
