I'd love to try and make this a more active forum for the Maine brides - where is everyone getting married and when?
We're planning to get married somewhere on the coast (shocker, I know), preferably between Bath and Rye, NH. Our original idea was to get married on the coast up in Washington County, then we were focused on the coast in Lincoln or Waldo County, and now we've "settled" on the southern coast since a lot people are coming from Massachusetts.
Our energy has been dedicated to finding a location that's right on the water, that will allow for outside catering (Mr. Obraustin is a cook in a local restaurant and wants to have high participation in the food aspect of the wedding), and that has an outdoor area available for games (like croquet, not football
). It's been really hard to find locations that fit all of our criteria.
Does anybody have any suggestions for locations or search tips?
And, Gloss, what about you?
We are getting married in Greenville on Moosehead Lake -
We did a hefty search through southern maine since a lot of our guests are coming from MA as well (including us) but ended up further north in the end. Have you tried SMCC? I know it sounds a little weird to have it on a college campus, but there are some really nice buildings and they have a large field called picnic field where you could set up a tent and it's right on the water. I have some contact info if you want it, just PM me.
Have you looked into the DuckTrap Retreat? That was Mr. Gloss' favorite, but it didn't really fit our budget.
We're getting married at Harbor View @ Jones Landing on Peaks Island. I'm really excited about it and all of our guests will have to travel by ferry to get to the island so i'm a little nervous about the logistics but I think it'll be great.
Confession: I have yet to see the venue. I've seen it in pictures and I was there many years ago, but I can't remember anything about it. I was just offered a new job this week, so it's not looking like I'll be able to go in April to check stuff out, so I'll just have to trust that it'll be nice. How can you go wrong with getting married on the water in Maine!
The toughest part so far was that the hotels in Portland aren't cheap! The best rate I was able to secure was $179 at the Eastland. it's definitely more expensive than I pictured, but what are ya gonna do? If people would rather stay outside of Portland, then by all means, they're welcome to.
I've been following your planning Miss Gloss and look forward to more tips!
PS. are you using those galvanized pails that were on your inspiration board? I think we're using pails, but I'm having a hard time finding the right style (French) and size (11") with a single handle, not the two small ones on the side. Any suggestions?
hey all!!
we are getting married in Sunday River and the Grand Summit Resort...we started off looking at coast as well... specifically in Castine, but it was very expensive and although very beautiful, a bit of a hike for my family who is all located in new york, ma, or florida. We went to check out the Grand Summit and really liked it. I really like the western part of the state and spent a lot of my summers in Hiram area as well as the lake region. Since my FI and i have been dating, he has been coming with me to the western part of the state and we both really love it and it has special meaning for us. Also, the Grand Summit really has a nice ball room and the food was amazing, we did our tasting 2 weeks ago. Also, i really felt the price was reasonable for what we wanted.
Our ceremony will be on a wooden covered bridge just a couple miles down the road...it is really a very pretty spot!!
almost very thing else is DIY...cakes, flowers, center pieces, std, invitations, etc....but, looking forward to it!!
@maine bride in dc : I've seen your venue! (the have regee bands on sundays during the summer) It will be very nice - they just re-did it recently and there are indoor and outdoor areas. Also, it's RIGHT there when you get off the ferry so your guests can't miss it. The view from their outside porch is great! Make sure you have everything written down for the venue/caterer that works there. A friend of a friend got married there a few years ago and they never gave out her favors (Godiva) bc they couldn't find them (they found them weeks later and they have been left in the heat and melted), and there was some confusion about the open bar which resulted in a huge tab at the end. I'm sure everything will be fine - but just a heads up!! Get everything in writing!
@ms. circus peanut: I love Sunday River and you're right, their ballroom is very nice and I love that bridge! I've seen it in a few photos and it always looks so nice! We found the southern coast prohibitively expensive as well - thats why we moved North!
We're getting married at the First Parish Church in Portland and then it's quick trip to the Portland Club (in Portland) for the reception. Because we're getting married on Halloween, the Portland Club is perfect. It's an old manison and that will definitely add to the mood.
I feel like Maine has such a lack of vendor options - are you ladies having anyone do your make-up?
I'm having friends do my hair and make-up. But I know what you mean about vendor options! I'm currently in search of a florist, dj and limo company that are won't break the bank.
I'm a little late to respond, but I am getting married on the coast too. We are getting married in Camden at the amphitheater by the library and we are having our reception at the Whitehall Inn. I am a little nervous because when I went to look at the inn they were closed for the season. I am hopeful that everything will be great! I am planning from Burlington, Vermont so that has been a little challenging, but I can always go home to visit and meet with vendors in person.
@seaglass909: that is an AMAZING location for a ceremony!! you have to share pics!
Hi all,
We are getting married in Camden in September and as you all have commented there are very few reception options especially if one wants to have a water view and are planning something small (40ish) and already have a caterer. I am still looking! wish me luck!
btw seaglass the camden ampitheater is a lovely spot for the ceremony!
Welcome gertie!
Camden is such a beautiful area! Keep us posted on your progress! :)
@gertie: I am really excited about the amphitheater. I don't remember the details, as my fiancee called, but the Cider Barn was a really interesting place that I liked the looks of, but was too small for us. Camden just happened to work for us so I didn't look at too many other places here. Let me know what you end up doing!
Hi ladies! I'm getting married in October at Migis Lodge in South Casco, on Sebago Lake. My fiance and I live in Brooklyn now but I grew up in Maine, and we're actually planning on moving back to the Portland area this summer.
Ms. Gloss, I am TOTALLY feeling your worries about having 80's prom hair!! My mom is having her longtime hair stylist come to Migis to do her hair, and I'm just having her blow mine out. I have a chin-length bob so it shouldn't be terrible. Still, I asked my mom if the stylist was going to come with a crimper... But who can you find up in Greenville, short of hiring someone from Portland to travel??
@MigisBride: I know!! I'm SO nervous! Esp. since my hair is already naturally curly, people just tend to want to put more curls in it....and if anyone sticks baby's breath in there I might have a meltdown! :) I'm jealous that you get to move back to Maine! I love the Portland area!!
We're getting married at the Yarmouth Meeting House and then having a reception at my parents' house in Freeport. I hope it's good weather!
Miss Gloss - It may be a total hike for you but Kate at Headgames in Portland specializes in curly hair and the salon is awesome. It's very 2009, no where near 1989 ;) I know that they will travel to do hair & makeup off-site for wedding too.
Hi Maine brides! I'm recently engaged, and we're planning on getting married in Bar Harbor next summer (2010). We're thinking of a reception at either Asticou or the Causeway Club. We are SERIOUSLY hoping to have our ceremony in the gorgeous Thuya Garden, however it sounds like it might not work out for the size of our wedding (~100 ppl).
Hey everyone! We're getting married next year in May and it's also gonna be the coast of Maine, since we live here. I really want a nice beach because I want to feel the sand between my toes when I say "yes" ;-) We haven't really looked yet. I want a beach that is not too crowded in May. I was thinking about having the reception in an inn close to the beach or so. I have never planned a wedding and I have no clue. :( And I don't really have friends here cause I'm from Germany originally and all my friends are over there and only some will be able to fly over here for the wedding.
I was thinking that if we don't find/get the right beach, that we could get married at Pemaquid Point Lighthouse..that's a beautiful place. Has anyone been there before?
Camden & Bar Harbor are VERY nice and I can't wait to see your pictures! I think that would be a little too expensive for us though.
Hello everyone! We are getting Married at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester (about 20 minutes north of Portland) on September 18, 2010. It is a 5,000-acre working dairy farm! We currently live in Providence, RI, but I grew up in Portland.
Congratulations, Sarah! I went to a beautiful wedding there a few years ago, and grew up in the next town over. Pineland is beautiful!
We just decided on a destination wedding in Boothbay Harbor, sept 2010.
I would like to have the ceremony at Pemaquid point, but have yet to work out the details on how that would work! If anyone has any advice on that, please let me know!
I'm a little late responding as well!
We're getting married this November at our church in Scarborough and then jetting over to the Salt Water Grille for our reception, it over looks the Portland Harbor.
I was going to have the Make-Up Shop do our make up but we are currently looking at other options. The Make-Up Shop is awfuly expensive and we would have to go to them.
Our wedding will be held in Oakland, ME on 11 Sept 10. The wedding location (ceremony & reception) is Alden Camps -- an 'American Plan' resort situated along a lake. After Labor Day, the Camp allows for events such as weddings to be held on their property.
I'm planning my Maine wedding from southern New Jersey. My family's been vacationing near Belgrade Lakes since my mom was young and that tradition has continued through the generations -- hence my complete and utter love for the state. My parents, along with several other family members, now spend their summers in ME and my brother/sister-in-law live there year-round. Since I have quite a few folks who will be near my wedding site in the months leading up to it, we hope to have a decent amount of help orchestrating our laid-back, DIY-focused shindig.
Hi ladies, I am new here, so I hope I am posting this correctly!!
I'm getting married at the Harbor View at Jones landing on Peaks Island next summer (08.28.10). Both the ceremony and reception will be there. Maine Bride in DC - they redid the entire tented structre this spring - I have MANY pics I can send you, if you want. Just send me a message and your e mail! We are working with Paula from Black Tie Catering, who has been GREAT to work with.
Getting hair and makeup done at Head Games in Portland - I love them!
Look forward to chatting with you other Maine brides :)
We're having our reception at the Cliff Side Lodge in Poland. It is a post and beam two story lodge with a stone fireplace. You rent it for the entire weekend and it sleeps 25. It is on a large pond. We wanted to get married at our camp on Moosehead but the travel was to much for the elderly and out state guest. So this is the closest we could get. Its beautiful. They only do weddings from Labor day until the last weekend in Oct.
Hi, Maine brides! I'm not getting married in Maine. FI is from Yarmouth, though and I just wanted to say I love all these spots! Before we decided to get married in Sedona, I was planning on Ogunquit.
@runningbee - My FI's sister got married in the Yarmouth Meeting House back in 95. It was very nice. Just make sure if you have any readers that they SPEAK UP! For some reason, sound does not carry in there. I had a reading and felt like I was yelling. They had a horse and carriage take the bridal party down there from her house.
Happy Planning to all of you!
Hiya!
Love to hear where everyone else decided to get married in Maine! There are so many beautiful spots, it was difficult to choose. I'm so excited for my wedding next August at the Bradley Inn (http://www.bradleyinn.com) on Pemaquid Point. I lived in New Gloucester, very near to Pinelands, until I was 8, and then moved to Yarmouth (arizonabride, did your FI go to YHS?). I've been living abroad for the last 6 years, but finally back home now, and dragging my FI along with me. I cannot wait for all our friends and family to come and see how gorgeous Maine is. Perfect place for a wedding, if you ask me!
If anyone reading this is still searching for a place to hold their Maine wedding, so far I would definitely recommend the Bradley Inn. The owner, Beth, is super sweet and really seems to know her stuff. Plus, the food is AMAZING. It's not such a big place, so you basically rent the whole inn out for the weekend, so it's only your own guests there, no chance of any randoms interrupting things.
Best of luck to all my fellow Maine brides. I like to think the scenery makes up for the lack of vendors...at least I hope so.
@emmalina - No, spoiled FI went to Gould Academy in Bethel after 1 year at NYA and his sis went to NYA. Maine is so beautiful. I wish I was tougher about the climate but just can't take the cold. So glad we will always have an excuse to go in the summer and we will have the best of both worlds:-)
Hi there,
This is for the people that are looking for Maine venues. I Do Spas is Maine's first traveling day spa & beauty. Offering on site hair, make-up, manicures, pedicures, massages, and facials. With a staff of 12 for large and small events. Providing everything even robes and slippers. They come right to you. www.idospas.com
I'm actually doing the same thing as Mrs. Circus Peanut! I fell in love with the ceremony venue for all of its beauty and with the staff at Sunday River. I cannot wait!
We're getting married on Great Diamond Island - at the Diamond's Edge - its so pretty! We're doing a Sunday wedding over Labor Day weekend of next year (9/5/2010) and it really helped us to cut some costs! We're also chartering a private boat back (where we'll have our dessert / candy table) an option I'd recommend to all those tying the know on an island!
Anyone else hosting at Diamond's Edge??
@Temms33: My cousin got married at Diamond's Edge and it was fabulous. Her pictures were gorgeous and everyone was taken by the idea of the island. My recommendation would be to make sure your officiant is there at least one boat trip before your ceremony is supposed to start. Theirs didn't show up until five minutes before!
Hi bees! I am out of stater (MA) who just booked my venue in Maine and I am so excited! We are going to be in the Sunday River/Bethel area, but are renting a private house called the Ski Esta. I would love any input and advice about the area. We are heading up there this summer for a vacation to get to know the area better. Our wedding is planned for Labor Day weekeend 2011.
Hi Chrispygal - look up Chefa's catering for your wedding. They were AMAZING for our wedding. Sooooo delicious!
we just put down our deposit for the Stone Mountain Arts Center in Brownfield! I grew up in Yarmouth so it's a bit of a trek (1.5 hours or so) but the location/facility is to die for! It was really love at first sight. Such a great natural/eco chic vibe. I'm so excited to finally have an official ceremony/reception location! :)

We're getting married in 79 days (holy crap) at Blue Sky restaurant on York Beach. Finalizing the menu has taken more work than I expected, but the staff has been really great and the staff at the Atlantic House has been really amazing as well. It's not a long drive from Boston, but since we don't have a car it does make it a little more difficult/expensive to get everything done, which I wasn't expecting. It will all be worth it.... it will all be worth it....
We are getting married at the Asticou inn in Northeast Harbor....fingers crossed for nice weather.
