@Shy_Pie:  Here is a recent article on the top 10 snorkelling destinations in the Caribbean: http://www.caribjournal.com/2013/03/14/the-caribbeans-top-10-snorkeling-destinations-for-2013/

If beaches and snorkelling are your top requirements you can start searching there, and then narrow down places based on budget/location.

One thing I will say about Grenada which made the list, I love Grenada (I lived there for 3 years) and their beaches are beautiful but if you want to snorkel right from the beach there is really only one place to do that.  There are two reefs you can take a boat trip to for snorkelling that are great, and they usually take you to the underwater scultpture part which many people rave about but I did not enjoy it.  I felt it was too deep for snorkelling and would have been better to see it with scuba.

Hi @Shy_Pie:  first I see you are relatively NEW to WBee… so a BIG Welcome to “the Hive”

You will want to check out the HONEYMOON BOARD… lots of posts over there on tropical / beach Destinations.

TripAdvisor is my trusted source for info when it comes to Travel Planning… they have Travel Suggestions – Travel Guides – Reviews (Accommodations – Restaurants – Attractions) – and their Forums

The Forums are like the Boards here on WBee… you can post Questions and chat with people who know the area best (live there, or travel a lot)

Time of year is going to be major in WHERE you plan to go.  Atlantic Hurricane Season in the Caribbean spans June 1st to November 30th.  With the greatest activity / storms happening traditionally in August – September – and October.  And the later the season, the further south they press… on into the Gulf of Mexico – Mexico – Central America

Islands that rarely see Hurricanes are the ones to the farthest south in the Antilles… Barbados, T&T, and the islands off the northshore of SA… like the ABC islands.

The best months weatherwise in the Caribbean are January thru April.

In the summertime, the Mediterranean / Europe is fabulous (Greek Isles evidently have incredible beaches)

Hawaii I believe is good year-round

And the South Pacific, or the Islands off of Africa have their own ebb-and-flo with the seasons (you’d have to do some research)

As I said, go over to the HONEYMOON BOARD… you’ll see lots and lots of topics.

Hope this helps,

@Shy_Pie:  certain areas in mexico (cancun, cozumel, riviera maya) have great snorkling.  especially off the coast of cozumel.

punta cana, dr has some great snorkling.  also, la romana, dr had some great snorkling right off the beach.  no boat tour required.

the waters anywhere can change instantly with just one storm so you never know what you are going to get.

@Shy_Pie:  I do think Grenada is a fabulous island with great beaches, their beaches often end up on on top 10 lists as well.  The beaches on the Atlantic side are calmer, but the one resort on the Pacific side that was just turned into a Sandals has a wall in the ocean to block the waves so they have calm water on their beach.

It is worth checking out, although it is a bit more expensive than other islands because it is not as popular.  Are you planning on going on your honeymoon right after your wedding in August? If so, FORGET about Grenada.  That is when all the students for the med and vet school are flying back to the island and you DO NOT want to be in the airport when that is happening.  That is the only thing about Grenada I do not miss, lol!

TO @Shy_Pie: you are very welcome.  Are you looking to honeymoon in the month of August ?  (your profile lists your Wedding as August 15, 2014)

As for snorkelling… there are lots of great places in the Caribbean that I know of.

Mr TTR & I have had great experiences right off shore (walked in off the beach) in St Thomas USVI and St Lucia

I understand that on this side of the world that the Cayman Islands have some of the best Scuba & Snorkelling in the world !!

They certainly are on my SHORT LIST of places to get to for that very reason

Hope this helps,

@Shy_Pie:  Wow, lucky you! Now I’m not sure how far you’d be willing to travel but we have stayed at both of the following places for holidays and they were AMAZING:

1. Breakas Beach Resort, Vanuatu http://www.breakas.com/ – Awesome if you want to still be active i.e. kayaking, snorkelling, sight seeing, etc.

2. Mai Samui Beach Report & Spa, Thailand (Koh Samui) http://www.maisamui.com/ – Better if you want to relax by the pool and sip cocktails… No snorkelling though but on our last night we were shocked to find a fish in the swimming pool! Scared the bejesus out of of me 😛 But it was still awesome! Lots of activities outside the resort though – trekking, swimming in waterfalls, canoeing, sight seeing.

Good luck and wish you well wherever you end up going.
