I am sort of at a mental roadblock in thinking about where to go for a vacation.
Like, there’s a part of me that just can’t comprehend it.
(I’m sort of having a mental roadblock for everything lately, haha)
We’re getting married in a little more than 6 months, but we’re both burnt out from planning and work (and life in general) – we need a break!
I’m a bit overwhelmed by all the places we could go for vacation, because I’m open to anything! We’ve talked about going to a beach to relax, or a city to explore… can’t decide!
So I’m hoping some bees are feeling more creative and less vacation-idea-challenged than I am…
Anyone have any good suggestions for places to go?

@CakeyP: when are you planning to go? how many days? what is your budget? do you want to drive or fly? how many hours of travel are you up for?

@CakeyP: You should be able to get great deals down the Eastern Coastline since school is back in session starting this week in Florida. I highly recommend Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head Island, Savannah, and St. Augustine. The beaches are less crowded after August is over plus the weather is gorgeous (not too hot, not too cold, and no more afternoon rain showers.)

We did a great short vacation at Charlottesville, VA. There are a lot of historical places to visit. We stayed at a B&B that was near resturants. It was a very laid back, fun vacation.

@September29: Sometime soon (September), about a week, budget is flexible but preferably under $1500 for hotel+flight, hours of travel don’t really matter too too much. 🙂
Hmm… we can drive, but last time we took a trip (to Boston) my car totally flipped out (in the NJ-to-Boston traffic) and behaved like a brat the entire ride there. We thought we were going to break down on the side of the road! I think it’s fixed, but the car might get the stink-eye in favor of a flight (if the cost is reasonable).
@beachbride1216: I don’t think I’ve been to any of those places! I’ve heard of a few, but those all sound really nice, and the drive isn’t terrible (we could stop somewhere for the night).
@KoiKove: Charlottesville sounds like a beautiful place – I will look into that for sure!
Thanks for the suggestions so far!
I literally haven’t been able to research places because I didn’t know where to go. Ironically, planning a vacation has been stressing me out 😛
(I mean, come on – I get enough of that from the wedding!)
Has anyone ever been to Canada?
I’ve never been, and it’s an idea we tossed around when we talked about taking a trip. Same thing though… I didn’t know where to start looking to travel to.
I think we could even drive up there if we really wanted to.

@CakeyP: One of my favorite North Carolina beach is Ocean Isle Beach but there is really nothing to do there. You have the beach and that’s pretty much it. All the times I’ve gone (usually in May) it’s been very quiet. It’s an hour away from Wilmington and an hour from Myrtle Beach so there are great day trips for you to enjoy. We always stayed at Ocean Isle Beach Inn which is pretty basic but does the job. It’s right on the beach too and the ocean views are great.
I love Hilton Head Island too. I loved the seafood. We stayed in a condos called Hilton Head Resort which you can rent out a week for fairly cheap. I think it was $800/week or so. You rent through the owners but the website gives you all the options and it’s a quick walk to the beach.
Charleston is a great city! I highly recommend it. I have had several friends honeymoon there and my best friend got married there. We stayed at the Embassy Suites the last time we were there. It was close enough to most of the main attractions but kind of far-ish from the beach.
Internationally, we’re going to Costa Rica in February! It’s currently green season but if you had a bit more wiggle room in your budget, you can probably go there for pretty cheap-ish. Green season = rainy season. We booked everything through Anywhere Costa Rica but the flight. It’s really easy to put in a few things and then have them send an e-mail of the itinerary. It’s actually really interesting to book and see what they can arrange in your budget.
Have you looked at Groupon for hotel deals too?

We just did a mini moon right after the wedding since we were so burnt out on planning, lol. This year we’re going to California – San Francisco, Sonoma, then down hwy 1 to Monterey, Carmel and Big Sur. We leave on the 31st actually!
Some other places we (well, I) considered:
Savannah / Tybee Island, or maybe a road trip up from Florida to Charleston.
South Dakota (Mount Rushmore, Badlands, Custer State Park, Sylvan Lake, etc). Sounds a little weird but I went there as a kid and really liked it, lol.
Banff, Alberta – I’ve been before and it’s gooorgeous. Lake Louise especially was lovely (you can google map it if you want to see what the scenery is like).
California – Yosemite.
Martha’s Vineyard – never been, but it looks nice.

Seattle. I’ve been there for a long weekend. Loved it. Pike Place Market, did a ghost tour, visited the first Starbucks, Art Museum, Music Museum, had dinner in the space needle, visited Jimmy Hendrix Grave, went to Kurt Cobain’s house where he shot himself, Did a ghost tour of Pike Place, visited the wall of gum in Pike Place. I loved that place! I want to go back! And if you LOVE to shop, downtown Seattle is the place to go!!!
ETA: i mentioned the ghost tour twice. Oops…either way, it was intereting and fun! LOL
ETA again: We also visited Bruce and Brandon Lee’s grave. I know..we are morbid !

@MRSsrm85: Oh, thanks for all the accomodation suggestions! That’s always good to know. And Hilton Head sounds more appealing after you mentioned seafood, haha
I’ll definatley look into Charleston, too – I’ve been hearing such good things about it lately.
I have looked at Groupon for hotel deals, it’s just that we don’t know where to go… the deals all become meaningless when the world is your oyster, hahaha. When we get a better idea of where we’d like to go, I will be checking on there, plus a few other places (AAA discount for the win!). 🙂
@Westwood: We’d love to go to Cali! But I think it’s out of our budget… the flights from NJ to there can be so expensive! We’re probably going to Hawaii for our honeymoon, so I may see if we can crash a few days in California for a long layover. Very jealous though! :
@rickhurst35: Seattle is on my list of places to see, so I’ll check out prices for that. I have a feeling it might be too expensive for us to travel out there right now :/ Boo!
Haha, ghost tours, grave visits, death-site visits… sounds morbid to me! 😀

@CakeyP: The seafood is even better in Charleston! OMG, if you go I would be so jealous! 🙂

@MRSsrm85: You know you have a problem when: vacation choices are swayed by how much seafood you can eat. Yes that is me. ;P
OMG I love seafood, don’t eat nearly as much as I’d like to.

Michigan! Seriously, Sleeping Bear Dunes is wonderful. I love the western side of the state. There are some great beaches all along Lake Michigan!

@RunsWithBears: I never even thought about Michigan for a vacation spot.
Thanks! I’ll totally look into it.

@CakeyP: Acadia National Park in Maine is supposed to be amazing. You could go to Bar Harbor and make a trip over to Acadia. Leaves changing, puffins, whale watching, lobsters, etc….

@CakeyP: I know what you mean! I would totally have mercury poisoning if I lived closer to the coast.
