Darling Husband and I obtained a dining room set from my mother’s best friend’s husband, whose parents passed away recently. He gifted it to us since it meant a lot to him that we would use it and cherish it so it wouldn’t have to go to a stranger. Darling Husband and I payed over $1,000 to have it refinished (the furniture was from the ’70s so it definitely needed an update) and it’s now a beautiful dark cherry with reddish undertones. We’re hoping to have this furniture as long as the first owners did, so we didn’t mind spending the money to make it look beautiful.
The only problem is that we couldn’t take the dining room chairs with us. They were thick and bulky and completely fabric from head to toe. The fabric was orange. We could’ve gotten them reupholstered but they were so bulky that we couldn’t even get enough of them around the table to seat as many people as the table is meant to seat. All in all, a very dated look that had to go.
So now I need to find dining room chairs. I would like to buy eight because even though we won’t be using all eight chairs now at this stage in our life, by the time we do need all eight chairs, I would be devastated if I could no longer get matching chairs or the company was out of business, etc.
I will try to post a picture of the table, although it doesn’t matter so much what it looks like, more any place I can go to find wood dining chairs that are INEXPENSIVE. I don’t need these to be the chairs I take with me to the grave – we can always upgrade later if we really can’t afford anything nice enough now – but I want nice chairs that will complement the furniture and see us few some good years in life. (IKEA has nothing, already checked.)
P.S. I’d be willing to settle for six chairs if I couldn’t get all eight 🙁

I don’t know if you have a World Market in your area—but I LOVE all of their dining room furniture. The prices are about the same as any where else (well…at least the places I’ve looked). The great thing is they always have furniture sales and if you join their mailing list they always send out coupons (10%-30% off!) which you can also use on furniture. Check it out:

What do you consider inexpensive? Have you looked for estate sales/classified ads/craigslist in your area?
I just bought a kitchen table and chairs fro pottery barn on clearance. The chair in my store was marked down 75% so it was $49 and I had to call other stores and get the matching chairs shipped to me. They were all between $75 and $99 each.
One idea I have seen is to have 6 side chairs, then you can always add fancier chairs for the heads of the table later.

Have you looked on overstock? I bought some chairs for the kitchen and they had tons of options.

Thanks for the replies/suggestions. I just got off for spring break from work so when I have some time in the coming days I’m going to sit down and look over all of the suggestions you’ve given me. Thanks 🙂
@kerensa: I love Pottery Barn – I’m getting our bedroom set delivered tomorrow from them. But they are truly very expensive. We paid an arm and a leg for this bedroom furniture. I’ll have to check out their sale items though because I do love them.

I know here (Seattle/Pacific Northwest) there are some stores that specialize in unfinished wood furniture. Usually pine, which is solid. I’ve gotten stuff from these guys: http://whittierwood.com/index.html and liked them.
The other thing you can do is collect a mix of chairs that are all different and embrace the ecclectic vintage look! 😉

@Mrs.Camera: Yes, my mother told me the same thing about the eclectic look. It’s my dream aesthetic in many ways but not one I think I can pull off!
We also have a store here that sells unfinished wood so I’m definitely going to look into it. I’m just worried that the cost of buying from a place like that will be exorbitant but I won’t know until I look.

@Benavis1489: I agree World Market!
I bought some grey tufted back chairs for like $100 per chair!!! They are so classy looking & everyone that comes to our house loves them 🙂

I also agree with World Market! That’s where we got ours and I love them!

If you aren’t too picky about the style, there are certain chairs that are less expensive from higher end stores. I bought Jake chairs from Room & Board for my dining table adn they were only $79 each. They’re a more modern style though so you have to like that.
