I would call and ask about methods/qualifications, etc, until you find someone you are comfortable with. Also, many places having sliding scales based on income, just a heads-up!
I searched Google for "mycity marriage counselor" and found a number of results via Google maps. I called the couple of counseling groups they have in the area, thinking that my chances of finding a good fit would be better with a group. I found a few options that way, and we ended up going with an intern -- $80/session (we're in California) every 1-2 weeks.
My FI and I are not in the least bit religious. We actually found a non-denominational minister to marry us. We are meeting with him for pre-marriage counseling ever 2-3 weeks, and it is 0% religious. It's also free (we'll give him a donation,) which is awesome. We actually find that he's a lot more down to earth, and more real.

Neither of us are religious and I would not want to go to a church or a synagogue for premarital counseling. Where do I find a good reputable counselor to do our premarital counseling? Do you think psychology today would be a good place to start? I really have no clue! Thanks bees!
