@cranraspberry:  I have no idea where to get a suit for under $1000, but couldn’t you just find an excellent tailor to reconstruct a tux that may be a little too big?

@cranraspberry:  For well under $1000 you can get made-to-measure from http://www.thickasthievesla.com/. A good friend of ours (who is about 5’6″ and maybe 140 pounds) got his wedding suit through them and it fits impeccably. Likewise, another online made-to-measure is http://www.indochino.com/. FI says it’s a bit cheaper than thickasthieves.

If you’re near NYC or Washington, DC, Suit Supply (where FI is buying his tuxedo) does made-to-measure and sells a lot of sizes. FI is really thin, but ridiculously tall, so I can’t speak to them carrying your FI’s size. This is, however, why I know so much about custom suits…

My FI also suggests calling local tailors. They, apparently, often start at about $800 for a made-to-measure.

Keep us updated! I’d love to see the progress of a made-to-measure!

@cranraspberry:  My FI probably has yours beat on the skinny scale. 6’4” 155lbs. He found one that fit pretty nicely at Men’s Warehouse then had it tailored by a local seamstress to make it perfect. He came it under $750. We were really happy!

My co-worker jsut had a wedding and her two groomsmen (one was best man, other was a groomsman) had similar measurements to your FI.  She found suits for them at H&M!

That said, there are online places that offer semi-custom.  I know she was looking at sutisupply.com because they started at a 36S, but the groomsmen wanted to try on at the mall first and ended up going with H&M.  What did Men’s wearhouse measure your FI at?

ETA: She also said to look at indochino.com as they do full sutom over the web for reasonable prices.  Her now hubby likes suits and has ordered from both, though he says he prefers Suit Supply.  She can’t remember why right now.

@cranraspberry:  I’m almost that size, and I don’t have much trouble.  Are you looking at 36 short?  What is your suit budget?  MTM can be had for as little as $300 for the cheap online ones, and as little as $600 for the ones the tailor measures, then orders from a factory.  Personally, I’ve come to decide that, if the price tag rises to $500, I would not even bother with off the rack.  Why would you, when, for $100 more, you can have MTM?

Also try vintage – check out this that I picked up for myself – I’m a 38S, 5’7″ 150 lbs (fairly lean):

@cranraspberry:  Take a long look around to your local tailors, and menswear shops.  Lots of MTM are measured up either in stores, or tailor’s shops, and sent to factories in Montreal – even if you’re in the US.  I’d go that route, vs. online, and I know that, here in Vancouver, you can get a two-piece suit that way for $650.

@cranraspberry:  I don’t think it was from that line. I don’t believe it was out when he purchased it (2 years ago?) I might be wrong. I’ll happily check his suit when I see him today!
