LiveJournal has a community that offers free MP3s that are shared from others that have the CDs they've owned and converted.
It's called wedontsendit. If you do a search for it under "name" at LiveJournal, you should be able to find it.
Basically, it's an MP3 sharing community.
You can upload songs from CDs to your ipod. My FMIL does it and she has more cd's than... well you get the point.
Also, you can share itunes & music with family and friends. I've gotten some songs from friends of mine that have more extensive music collections than mine. For example, say you have a friend with a crazy music collection. Borrow a bunch of CDs and upload them to your ipod... or call your friends that have ipods and have them burn the music onto CDs (easily done in Itunes) and you upload those onto your harddrive... OR you could just copy the files directly from one computer to another by going into the itunes folder, copy all files onto a jump drive (thumb drive, flash disc) or even a memory card (SD) from a digital camera and then take them from the jump drive and paste them into your Itunes folder directly on your hard drive. I did the latter when I bought a new computer and had to set up my music from one hard drive to the new one.
Good luck!
please please PLEASE be careful with this! i've known people who have gotten in big trouble for downloading music, and it wasn't for downloading a huge amount of songs either.
the friends and family route is a great idea though!
I agree that you have to be very careful pirating music over the internet. Friends and family are a much safer source of music. We're simply using our current CD and MP3 collections (since that's the music we like anyway), and then supplimenting with music from the iTunes store. I was lucky enough to get a $50 gift card from there for my birthday! Score!
yeah exactly! i don't know anyone personally but i know that many of those sites where you pay a flat fee per month are illegal.
guess i'll go through the CD route. itunes is super annoying b/c of their mp4 format which protects every song you purchase! so when i send a song i purchased on itunes to my fiance, he needs my itunes password to listen to it.
bearbride... if you burn the song to CD (instead of emailing it) then you lose the copywrite protection and he can import the song without needing your password.
You should try MP3 blogs. They are for review and sampling purposes and they only post one song from an artist for about a week. I don't know about the exact legalitly, but many times they have the permission of the label/artist to post it and most of the blogs have statments about removing the songs if anyone complains. To my knowledge, no one has been sued over getting anything from an mp3 blog.
It's mostly indie type stuff, but there is a mp3 blog aggreagator called Hype Machine that lets's you search by song title, artist, keyword, etc.
And some of the bigger, more popular music blogs are

Hi all - I don't want to purchase illegally downloaded mp3s and iTunes at a dollar per song is really adding up - does anyone know a good resource for mp3s is for my ipod wedding?
