Do you need plastic ribbon because you just like it? I see normal satin, silk or grosgrain on cakes all the time.
I'm not sure where to find waterproof ribbon, but a floral supply website or store would be a good place to start.
I just assume that since my cake will have buttercream frosting (as opposed to fondant), I would need a waterproof/plastic ribbon. I'm afraid the oil may stain through other types of ribbons. Should I reassess my assumption?
I would ask your baker. I've seen it done, so I'm sure there is a way to make whatever ribbon work. What color ribbon do you want to use?
I'm thinking of having a two-toned ribbon base (one solid color plus an edge color) but haven't decided on the exact colors. I'm considering any shades of purple (orchid, lavender, eggplant, royal purple) and possibly silver as an edge color or just a darker purple scheme as the edge.
Ok, I will ask the baker... Thanks!
Just to second what KateMW said, I see regular old ribbon on cakes all the time! I think you'd be fine with normal ribbon. If the baker says you need plastic backing, maybe you could put plastic backing on regular ribbon with contact paper?

Where can I go to get myself some polyethylene ribbon (with an adequate selection of colors)? Basically, I need some plastic/waterproof ribbons for decorating the base of each of the cake layers. Surprisingly Michael's does not carry this type of ribbons. I found some online but prefers to see the ribbon in person to assess colors and to save on some shipping charges....
