Any ideas on where to go in Western CT/Eastern NY for a dress that can be a sample or purchased off the rack? I’m not a big frilly dress girl but I promised my mom that at my “anti-wedding” I would wear a wedding dress. We planned the wedding for March 30th (grandpa is sick – we would like him to be there)
I don’t want to spend a lot of money since I am trying to keep this as low key as possible. I’m a HUGE fan of weddings, I just don’t want to spend money a wedding when we could put it toward a downpayment on a house.
I don’t know where to look – but I did promise my mom I would go out looking with her this weekend. I just don’t know where to start. Just want something simple, low-key, off the rack (sicne ther is no time to order anything)
Anyone have any suggestions?

I’m pretty sure you can buy samples from any bridal shop. You can always tell them in advance when you make your appointment that you are interested in buying a sample.

Do you have a Nordstrom nearby as they have really added a huge wedding boutique, at least in my area.

Nordstrom’s, Macy’s, Sak’s Fifth Avenue, etc have a bunch of cream/white/neutral evening gowns (and even prom dresses!) for waaaay less than wedding dresses cost. Definitely worth a try. YOu can even order a bunch online and then return any and all that don’t work.

@JH2013: How about J.Crew? I thought about ordering from there and returning the dress if it didn’t fit. They usually have some kind of coupon code too.

There are also the obvious places like David’s Bridal and Alfred Angelo.

Wow…thank you everyone for the suggestions! I’m going to make a list and go out this weekend. Unfortunately, my mom just had unexpected surgery and can’t go on a marathon dress hunt with me. She’s the one I’m really doing this for!
I have to admit, although we are just going to be married in a local historic pub, I have enjoyed looking at the dresses. I found one that looks like something out of the tv show Downton Abby – I’d love it but I’m not spending that much on a dress. Oh well…it really is about the day and not the dress. Maybe I’ll find something at one of these shops. It never occurred to me to check out nordstom and macy’s (no sax near by). I’m going to hit them up – along with Lord and Taylor. Maybe there is something there. I can kind of “pre-screen” for my mom. Same with the local shops. I didn’t realize they would sell the samples.
Somehow, my SIL was able to get a great dress for only $300 on a discontinued dress. It’ was great and the store repaired the one spot where there was some ripped lace. So minor you wouldn’t have seen it but they were great. I wish I lived closer to that store!
Also – thanks for the suggestion on jcrew. I like two of their dresses and was going to inquire about return policy. Very helpful. Thanks!!

If you’re up for a drive, there’s a sample wedding dress store in Watertown MA called Vows that sells samples. You can buy it and take the dress the day you purchase.

If you are willing to drive to Glastonbury CT, there is a great bridal consignment shop there http://www.bridestobe-cons.com/ They also carry new samples. I didn’t get my dress there, but I had a great experience, and was really impressed with their selection.

Depending what wedding dress size you are…I had great success at VOW’s in Watertown, MA. I was in and out with my dream dress in less than an hour. I paid a little more than I wanted-but due to my size (16) and the short time frame (8 weeks-they do have some dresses to order)- i didnt have as many options! In the end, I ended up with the gown of my dreams and I needed no alterations!!! eek!
