Split, Hvar and Dubrovnik.  Hvar is not a long boat ride from Split, you could do it in a long day trip or spend one night there.  Also recommend Trogir as a day trip from Split, its not a long drive.  Rent a car and drive to Dubrovnik.  On our honeymoon we rented a car in northern Italy and drove down all the Croatian coast = beautiful.  A trip to Plitvice is worth the drive too but maybe a bit far north.  Maybe 4 days centered around each city and a day for flexibility or side trip?

I haven’t been but my SO’s parents have been twice in recent year and they loved it, so I echo bella128‘s recommendation. Heard lovely things about Dubrovnik, Split and Trogir!

As for driving, I drove in Slovenia this summer and it was fine; it’s amazing how quickly you adapt to driving on the other side of the road!

@SLfairytale:  Are you going alone?  If you have a travel buddy who is more comfortable driving I’d recommend it.  My DH did the driving for us as we’re from Canada and 1. I’ve never driven a standard vehicle and 2. he has lots more experience driving in Europe – it probably wouldn’t be as much of an adjusment for you if you’re used to the tiny European roads and lots of vehicles, just a matter of switching sides.  There are also buses available I’m sure, its just a bit slow so take a good book.  You really miss out on alot not driving as there are so many beautiful little medieval towns along the coast so make little trips out of the city if you aren’t planning to drive.

I think it’s not a big deal to go back to Split to get to Dubrovnik – it would take forever to take a boat and all the connections are going to be from the bigger city.  It’s really doable in a day trip so you can sign up for a ferry to take you there and back in the same day and stay overnight in Split.  Its worth it spending time there, beautiful city.

The natural beauty really sets Croatia apart, if you have a chance to go to any parks to see waterfalls or hike, take it.  I’d also want to spend some time on a boat whichever way you do it as the ocean/coast is breathtaking.

Just an extra thing… SO’s parents have never driven in Coratia; they used the buses instead and found them really easy to use 🙂

@SLfairytale:  Hi, you really need to either see the krka waterfalls or the pitvice…. I love the krka waterfalls because you can actually swim in one place and its the most amazing water ever.

I couldn’t choose between the ones that you selected because all are amazing and you it really depends on what you are wanting to do there, if you reply with such information I will gladly give you more advice

@SLfairytale:  I was about to reply that we considered this destination for our honeymoon and we asked a girl I know who was born and raised in Croatia where to go and while she said Dubrovnik was a beautiful city, to her (being a local) it was a tourist trap and everything was twice as expensive. I think it’s a good thing that you chose to stay a few miles away from the city, you can still visit it easily, but accomodation and food will probably be more affordable. Have a nice trip ! 🙂
