Mr Corn and I went to the Elephant and Castle in downtown Boston for drinks after work for our first date almost 5 years ago. We go back every once in a while for lunch and I always get a little nostalgic when I pass by the table where it all started.
Where did you go on your first date? Do you ever go back?
As a high school senior, I asked my crush, Mr. MagPie (then a junior) to my senior prom. It was at the Bellevue in Center City Philadelphia -- and is also where he proposed! So yeah, for sentimental reasons, we go back to "visit" the ballroom from time to time.
We were both too young to drive at the time we started "dating" (if you can even call it that). I'm not sure the High school cafeteria really counts! So our dates started long after we were together :) I think it would be cool to have a spot where you could go to on anniversaries and such where you can say "and that is where I was too nervous to eat..."
What a weird coincidence that the two first comments are related to Boston (where I live now) and Philly (where I grew up). :-)
Our first date was a movie at a theater that shows a lot of indie/artsy/limited-release films (Kendall Sq. Cinema, for the Bostonians). Neither of us goes to this particular theater much, and when we left it that night, we made a wrong turn and got lost. We wandered aimlessly for more than an hour trying to find our way back to the subway. It was actually really funny and cute (especially since he's lived here all his life and still wholehearedly admitted that we were lost). We go there occasionally now, whenever a movie we want to see isn't playing anywhere closer.
The second half of that first date (after the aimless wandering) was spent sitting outside in Harvard Square, drinking tea and listening to a street musician play and sing several oddly perfect songs. We rarely go back there together, but I go there often for various reasons and it always makes me smile.
Our first unofficial date was to see Wedding Crashers but a couple of weeks later we went to a Red Sox game. That date became our official anniversary and we've tried to catch a game on that date every year since!
We met online and because we were working such different schedules, we had our first date at my house. We played Wii until very very late (or early). It was the best time. So technically we are always were we had our first date. Our first date out side of the house happened on Christmas Evening at the movies. We went back this year and it was so sweet. Oh, and we still tell people that it is okay to play with his Wii on the first day.
My fiance and I met in college while taking a course during summer session (his last class before he officially graduated). Since we were placed in the same group, we had been talking to each other a lot. We realized that we were both the shy type and needed to get out more often to make new friends. He decided that we should hang out together as a start to breaking out of our shells, and we went to a sushi restaurant on our first date. At the time I had no idea it was a date.. I thought we were just friends going out for a bite to eat. He was a total gentleman, and he brought me to Old New Castle after dinner to walk on the dock and even witness a pirate ship.
Fast forward 2.5 years later to the day he asked me to marry him. He recreated our first date and proposed to me on the dock at Old New Castle. It was perfect! I didn't even have a clue that he would propose, mainly because he made it seem like I had chosen the restaurant.
Like Yin, I proposed to Bee in the same restaurant as our first date!
When we lived in Jersey we went back to the place of our first date all the time- it was a diner (quite typical for Jersey). Now that we live in Boston, we are constantly lamenting the lack of a great diner in close proximity to our home.
our first date included laser tag and dinner at one of my favorite chinese restaurants, pretty far from where we went to school, and where I now live. I sincerely doubt we'll be able to return there anytime soon, as we'll both live across the county from our first date location(s)!
It was a magical night, though. I think I'll always remember it!
Hee hee...rosychicklet...I too morn the loss of easy access to a Diner :)
Our first date was at a nice Chinese restaurant. We love the place and will go there from time to time, but we have done so many nice things together, that it is just a restaurant now.
We went to a Korean barbecue restaurant and then dancing to our favorite local band for our first date. We are not Korean and had no idea what was going on with the food! We have never been back to that restaurant. But he proposed at another dance when our same favorite band was playing again. So we think of it as "our" band.
Our first date was... wait for it....
at TGIFridays! Oh, it is horrible but true. It was Valentine's Day 3 years ago, and it was the only non-sketchy restaurant on a scary street in Salt Lake City. I'm the queen of non-cheesy non-chain restaurants, and here I was at the cheesiest chain restaurant I could ever imagine. On Valentine's Day!
I thought it was inconsequential and no one would ever know, because I thought I'd never go for a second date with this guy... but now it's gone down in history. Just for kicks we might go back for Valentine's Day this year ;)
We have TWO first dates (we dated once before for a short period of time but quickly became long distance and were still in college and too "young" for something serious) and we go to both places often. Our first first date was at Bertucci's (I told you, young! I wasn't even legal to drink so a bar was out of the question) and our second first date was at Legal Seafood. A funny story about that is that we were supposed to go to a fancy dinner in Harvard Square (Upstairs on the Square for those Boston residents) and though we were more mature at this point, my fiance noticed the "fancy" menu and knew it wasn't my style so he called earlier in the afternoon to see if I was okay with switching to Legal's -- I was SO excited because my roommates and I had spent the last hour trying to figure out what in the world I would wear! And the way to my heart is definitely through seafood!
PS -- I know! Boston has no diners! What is up with that -- it's one of the few things I like about NYC - late night diners :)
Funny that a lot of people here are from Boston! Our first date was the Museam of Science in Boston for the lizards and snakes exhibit! We saw the butterfly garden too, which is why have chosen to use a butterfly picture for the save-the-dates. It was the first date, and therefore should be involved in the first major part of the wedding!
our first date.... was seeing Austin Powers - the 1st one, with a couple friends. It's in our hometown (yes we have been dating forever so our hometown is the same!) so we've gone back occasionally but there are other spots that hold a little more meaning for us that we try to revisit.
@heathaah -- love the name :) does your accent match?
All you Boston Bees come hang out on the Boston board!!! Help each other out, come on I'm Hive Hostess over there and it's pretty quiet!
It depends on who you ask.
What I considered to be our first date, we went to the Los Angeles Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Followed by drinks and appetizers at this great restaurant below it, on street level. (which we try to go to for performances).
When you ask my fiance, he says it was La Cav in Costa Mesa, Ca. (which we haven't gone back to lately).
Aw. The memories!
Dan is from Montreal, and I live in upstate NY. So our first date ended up being New Year's (a year ago) in Montreal. We went out for an amazing (but very expensive) dinner at Nuances at Casino de Montreal. Then we spent part of the night walking the old port of Montreal and watching fireworks...We go back to the old port section, but we haven't gone back to Nuanaces (just because of the expense for now) and I have not stayed at Place D'Armes since. However, I loved both!!!!
My FI and I had our first date at the local zoo. We go back occasionally now, but once we move, we'll probably only go to the zoo local to our new home.
Mr. Bananas and I didn't have any "real" dates (until after we were already dating) so much as we played pong in his fraternity basement...very romantic...but we do go back often to visit friends, etc, and, of course, play more drinking games : O
I do LOVE the restaurant where we had our first date in Richmond, where we currently live, and moved to after college :) It is such a fun memory for me because only when I started visiting him here (after he graduated a year before me) did we realize that whoa, this is serious, and I think that was a very sweet, fun time in our relationship.
I say that our first date was a blind date because we had never met in person, we had however talked on the phone for a few days prior to the date. We had been sort of introduced thru one of my co-workers. She gave him my number, he called and we talked for hours.
On their reccomendation we went to Famous Dave's. We rarely go back because we are NOT big fans of BBQ, but we go every now & then.
I voted never, but like some of the others that might depend on what you call the first date... he had asked me to "hang out" and we went out with a bunch of his friends. I had been to the restaurant before, but we have not gone back. We have been back to the place we went on our first real date but it doesn't really feel that special. I don't know, maybe it's just not like that for us... I did enjoy reading the other bee's sweet stories!
We went to Ben & Jerry's in newport, it was a bad date, so we don't relive it, ever. We just joke about it.
Doctorgirl, like you our first date was at TGIFridays. We met through an online dating service so TGIFridays was a safe and public place to meet for the first time. We ended up talking until the place closed. We still go every once in a while and I always feel a little nostalgic when I see "our" table. At least I did until they remodeled recently.
The first place my fiance and I went together as a couple (I refuse to accept it was a date) was this scuzzy bar called Paddy Macs to watch football with his buddies. And no, it isn't one of those charming dive bars. I'm pretty sure a couple of men across the bar were coming off of something elicit. The cockroaches were freaked out, I swear. It ended up being fun, since I like football and really get into it, but we have since found a place that we all doesn't require tetanus shots prior to entry.
Our first date was at a coffee shop in the town we worked in when we lived in China. He proposed there as well, but as we're now living in the US, we can't really go back!
We went to this fabulous then-new place called Cosmos in Orange Beach--it has "southern" sushi in addition to regular rolls and other food. I remember being really excited about the idea of a fried green tomato roll. It was insanely crowded--the curse of living in a beach community during tourist season--and we ended up sitting at a table that was practically on top of the band that was playing. We sat and talked and ate and drank wine for so long that we outlasted the band...and the wait staff...
Also happens to be where we proposed. :-)
Oh, and the Jersey girls and the diners...how I miss thee!
Our "First Date" was a trip to Coldstone Creamery. Mmmmm, ice cream is the way to my heart!!! We go back every so often.
Smokey Bones, 3 years ago!! But they're all out of business now. =(
On our first date we went to the only movie theater in town. We go back there often, though we haven't been recently because it is so expensive and we are saving for a wedding!
ours was to a university production of West Side Story, and we were just transitioning to being more than friends, but we haven't gone back
We met online and first date was lunch at a restaurant at a town in between where we both were living at the time. We actually ended up going to the restaurant next door to the one we had "planned" to meet at (he was waiting in the parking lot for me) so when we are asked where our first date was he always says "Joe's" and I say "No! LOL it was at Papparazzi!" We have never gone back there but I drive by the sign on the hwy all the time and it always brings a smile to my face.
Our first actual date was at The Elephant Bar. Not the most romantic of places, but we like some of the food. We occasionally go back, and ate there the night of our engagement (before he proposed so I just thought it was another night). I actually just read a few days ago that the kitchen caught on fire, so it looks like we won't be going there this year for our dateaversary.
I love this and am surprised more people haven't answered this one. Our first date was the Baltimore Zoo. It was first day open for the season, so in Maryland it ws still fairly cold. We mustered the weather and walked around like it was 80 degrees out. We area to area and took a ridiculus amount of pictures to document the day and what we saw.
I then took him on a mini tour of the quirky neighborhood I lived in at the time (Hampden) and we went to a local restaurant in the area Holy Frijoles and had just a great day!!
My FH took me to mass -- awesome :) We tried to get married in that church but they are booked until 2011!!!!!!!!!!!! {we should have made reservations on the first date -- I knew then ;)}
We've been back but so many other dates have meant so much I feel like the whole city is ours <3
Ours was a restaurant in Punta Arenas, Chile...so sadly no plans to go back anytime soon:( I suppose you could say it was being in Patagonia, but that's where we went to eat after he revealed he had romantic feeelings for me (after a wek of backpacking), so that's what I consider our first date.
Lillindy, dunno if I'm too late, but there is an Elephant Bar in Fremont that's open. Not sure if it would be the same, but just thought I'd let you know.
