@katiee0707:  Honestly it doesn’t matter.  They are about the same.  Don’t stress about the tiny details.

For some reason the Mexico place looks like it’s spring break central. Maybe it’s just the pics I saw but the DR is beautiful and looks more romantic!

Mexico…I have two friends that have gone to that exact all inclusive resort and they say it’s soo amazing and fabulous and the staff there are so nice! Fiance and I are doing Hawaii this year but that resort is next on our list!

Dominican. The mexican one looks so big, but maybe thats what you like. Maybe they are the same size?

The riviera maya area is less touristy/spring break like. It’s the better part of cancun. Personally I chose Mexico because I could get cheap plane tickets there.

Riu Palace all the way!!! I’ve been to both the DR and Mexico and find Mexico to have more to do and feel safer.  The beds on the DR hotel website look like 2 twin beds pushed together. I can attest that when I went our hotel did that in one room but also had a really nice grand 4 poster bed in the other room. I’d just be sure to check that the room you book has a big bed and not just 2 twins pushed together…that could cause for some interesting nights on your honeymoon.  We’re going to the Riu Palace in Aruba for our honeymoon so maybe I’m biased too 🙂

Both reviews look great!  If the resort prices are the same, are the flight prices similar?  I might look at flights to help make up my mind.

I voted for the DR resort.  I’ve stayed at two RIU properties and I’m not a fan.

I honestly didn’t look at the links (I’m at work and shouldn’t even be on the bee right now lol) but I’ve been to both places (not those resorts though) and let me just say that when we went to the DR our resort was AMAZING…but the second we stepped off the resort you literally feared for your life at times. If you’re the type of person who likes to chill at a resort, then do whatever you like, but we like to leave the resorts and explore the towns we’re in, eat local food, etc, and DR is one of the few places we found we couldn’t really do that. The only other place we felt that way was in Johannesburg, South Africa, when there was a travel alert saying not to go there, lol (it was where we had to fly into to go on a safari and we stayed overnight the last night)

it depends on what you like to do; tour the area?  adventure?  lie on the beach?

punta cana has beautiful beaches but not a lot to do off of the resort.  mexico has nice beaches too but has a lot of excursions off the resort.

Each destination has a variety of resorts that appeal to every kind of traveler, so it’ll depend on what you’re looking for.  Mypinkshoes is correct in saying that you need to ask yourself what kind of experience you want to have.  Cancun proper (i.e. the hotel zone) is typically more of the spring break kind of place w/tons of high-rise hotels, but the Riviera Maya (w/Playa del Carmen & Tulum) is much more relaxed and romantic.

That being said, if you are looking to go off-site and explore the area, then Mexico would probably be a better fit.  But if you’re looking to relax and just lay out on a beach for days on end, then the DR might be better suited.

Either way, they’re both great destinations.  It’s just a matter of finding the right fit for you & your FH.
