I think vanilla buttercream would be the safer choice just incase one of your guests is lactose intolerant.
@LetsGoPens: Nobody is lactose intolerant and there will be other desserts so it's not about safety - just which will taste better
I'd think vanilla buttercream would taste better with the white cake/lemon filling. If the lemon filling is on the sweet side, the cream cheese might be too sweet.
Is there anyway you can taste it with both options and decide what you like best?
If not, my vote is vanilla buttercream
@oracle: I like both but am just trying to figure out which will be ore likely to please a crowd.
I think you will be safe with either one. My first thought was to go with the vanilla buttercream, but this is a special day, so I think it should be a little more special, so I voted for the cream cheese. We are having a layer of lemon cake and we chose marionberry cream cheese mousse for the filling. I like them both equally. What does your FI think; maybe he can be the tie breaker :-)
It depends on if you're having fondant on top of the icing -- a lot of bakers do NOT recommend using cream cheese icing as the "show" layer because it tends to melt much easier and not hold shape as well as buttercream.

I can't decide which would be more popular to a crowd.
