I am meeting with a bakery tomorrow to get prices and I am trying to decide which cake I like best.

Option 1: With all white flowers instead of turquoise

    Option 2: Sugar crystal cake

Option 3: Combining the two with the middle layer having flowers and the other two layer covered in sugar crystals.

I really like #1.  It's quite whimsical, but I'd almost guarantee #2 is less expensive if that's a major factor.

Don't mix them though, I think that would be overkill.

@Mrs_Harmer_to_be:  I love the first cake ... It's gorgeous!  I agree with SapphireSun about mixing them, though ... It seems like there would be too much going on if you did that.

I like them both, but I think #2 will look really cool depending on what kind of lighting you have going in your reception. The sugar crystals have such a cool sparkly/reflective tone to them. I think the ribbon is too large for the cake as pictured, but that's an easy fix.

Another option to consider if you like some sort of reflective look to your cake - I am having my cake sprayed with sort of a pearlized finish, which will give it some depth and reflection, but still be a flat look like #1.

I voted for option 3.  I think it will be perfect, but ONLY if you use the shape of Cake #1 to do it.  The crystals on the top and bottom layers and flowers on the middle layer will not be overkill on a simple, round, tiered cake. However, the added visual detail of having an angled cake, plus those other two elements, would be very distracting.

Both are pretty but let's get to the most important information - what flavor will the cake be?

One of my friends had some custom cupcakes made for my birthday a couple years ago. They were topped with a glittery/sugary looking edible substance that looks similar to what is covering cake #2. Long story short, they had zero flavor and had the consistency of chewing small shards of plastic! I love cake 1, but if you decide on 2, do a taste test and see what the sparkle options are from your baker! : ]

@Mrs_Harmer_to_be:  I think option number 1 is much more romantic and pretty. But I also think it depends on the vibe you want for your wedding...like theme etc. Both cakes are pretty though! I think option 2 would look better without the ribbon, maybe have some other kind of embellishment in place of the ribbons? Cool

I really really like the first one, but I feel like there's something missing. I think I would like it better if it was buttercream on the first and third tier, with a little texture to it

So I went to the bakery today and I decided to go with cake #1, but it will be 4 tiers with the top tier covered in flowers as well. The flowers will be all white with bling in the middle of the flowers and bling around the edge of the 2 plain tiers like the first picture.

Now to the yummy part. The top and the bottom layer will be a madagascar vanilla cake with fresh strawberries and cream filling and the middle two layers will be a red velvet cake with whipped cream cheese filling. The cake will be all buttercream with sugar flowers so not a lot of fondant because buttercream is so much yummier :)

I have also decided on a grooms cake as a surprise for my FI. It will be a peanut butter buttercream filled chocolate cake with crushed reese's peanut butter cups. My FI loves reese's so I am so excited to surprise him with this. Here is the design for the grooms cake

I think cake 2 would be prettier if it was round or square

So for now I will go with #1

I would pick number 2 for the main reason that any fondant related mistakes (bumps, small marks, cake showing through etc) will be covered by the sugar. Also, as SapphireSun mentioned, the second option should be less expensive. If she tells you no, she's bumping up the price of the sugar cake (I say this as someone that has done quite a lot of fondant and suger paste decorations - those flowers take time!).
