Fiance and I are both pro photographers (he taught/is teaching me) and we use Nikon. We use D200 bodies because they’re sturdy and now inexpensive due to being outdated (important because we could easily have one broken in our line of work and don’t want to shell out thousands of dollars to replace). Honestly the lens is more important than the camera body. We also use Nikon lenses, and which one we’re using just depends on our need for the day. This may sound rude, and I don’t mean it that way, but it is not the camera that makes the photographer. Before you spend what can easily be thousands of dollars on equipment, get some photography education, whether it be in the form of community college classes or just photography books that’ll help you learn basics like ISO, shutter speed, and aperture.

Get either a Nikon or Canon DSLR, whatever the current basic model is. Keep reading and learning about aperture, iso, shutter speed, etc. Practice, practice, practice NOT in automatic mode. Learn about lighting, depth of field, how flash photography works. I used to do it a lot more as a hobby and I love it but haven’t been doing it for awhile now. I miss it, it’s fun. Good luck!

We bought a camera without having any experience with photography and found that our camera is perfect for us. All I know is that it’s a Nikon D3100 and it came with two lenses and was on sale at Best Buy for $500. I think that’s a pretty good deal because the second lense by itself was almost $100…but that sale was a long time ago.

Anyway it’s an awesome camera…it can give you pictures that look professional but just about anyone can operate it.

We use 5DMKIIIs. The price recently dropped, I think it’s only $3400 now.

My husband and I use Canon, Mark III and Mark II – can’t see shooting with anything else now, we love them. But if you’re just starting out I’d recommend the Canon 7D !

@mm86:   What sort of photography are you interested in?   That will help you decide not only which camera, but which lenses you will want to invest in.
