I’m not sure if the makeup artist made an exception for me or she always does this but the Christian Dior counter at my local Nordstrom did a full makeover for me for both my engagement photo shoots with no obligation to buy anything.  I have no idea if this is a Christian Dior thing or a Nordstrom thing but if you chat up the artists nicely, some of them might offer to do it for free!

Will it is not required to buy something, it is very nice if you do, most of those people who work at the counters are paid partly on commission, at least I was when I worked for Clinique.  Applying make-up takes time and it is hard to sell to other paying customers while you are doing one, so their sales may suffer.  I would suggest doing a trial with one of the people on an off-day (during the week, during the day) and then on Saturday, have the same girl do it so she can work a little faster knowing what you want.

Although it’s great to find places to do makeup for free, The intention of the companies were not to provide free makeovers for wedding parties storming into department stores as a group and leaving without paying a cent. I just think it’s bad manners.

Like Niki said, a lot of these people have sales quotas to meet for the day and when you go in there and take up 2 hours of their time, you pretty much not only got yourself a free makeover, used their talent and product for free, but also stole their money they make off of commision to make up for the low rate they get paid hourly and pushed them back on their competitive sales quotas. Now they must work twice as hard for the remainder of the day to make up for the 2 hours they just spent on you and your party. In instances of a party, I’ve seen people there for 4 hours. Imagine that, 4 hours of no productivity – the people at the counter know that they were working, but to their bosses, it looks like they just hung around and chatted for 4 hours. Everything is on paper black and white – that’s all that the bosses and corporate see – not the wonderful art of makeup- just numbers.

So the next time you may want to storm in and take advantage of the "free" makeovers, think about the how much more the makeup artists is giving up than just her time…

I think it’s awfully nice that makeup artists will do makeovers for bridal parties.  They deserve to get the recognition.  Also – a great bm gift idea is to give them $20-$50 giftcard each to purchase makeup items that they liked used on them.  That benefits you (getting the gift out of the way), your bms (yay for quality makeup items!), and the artist doing it for them.

If the employees are okay with this, and so is your party, go for it, I guess. I just wouldn’t do it. For the half an hour each they are working on your ladies, how many sales are they giving up? Even if you spend $50 per person, I’m sure on a Saturday they normally make more than that. I would just feel like I was taking advantage of someone.

Just my opinion, of course.

Hey ejs4y8

I wasn’t really trying to scold or anything. And I applaud you for having your intentions of buying product. Personaly, I have worked at a MAC counter before so I know how it is. As long as the girls are going to buy something each to make up for the makeup artists’ time, then it’s the least anyone can do.

The best place to get your makeup done is at the MAC counter.   Last I checked it was $40 at a MAC store, or $40 worth of products that you had to buy at a MAC counter in a dept store.  All of the artists are good, but just make sure that you book in advance.   I used to work for them and we would get whole bridal parties in on Saturday.   Very economical, and you get all the products that you want.
