I’ve always been really curious about this question. Before I got engaged (and started obsessing over rings and researching day and night), I thought that every diamond cut sparkles the same way. But as I started researching and started visiting jewelry stores more often, I realized that some shapes (such as emeralds) don’t sparkle as much as a shape like the classic round diamond.
So is my observation right? Are there some types of diamond shapes that just don’t reflect light as well? If so, which ones do you think they are?

I’m pretty sure step cut stones sparkle the least. That being said, they are my favorite stones.

I think it’s step cuts but they are still beautiful. Howevere you’d need to get a pretty great one (high color and clarity) otherwise it will show.

Yep, as the pps said, step cuts (round, asscher). That and their sparkle is different than most of the other cuts. Instead of like a twinkly sparkle they have big white flashes. They’re very pretty!
If you compare these two videos you can see what I mean:

I’ll agree with the PP’s… However. I have an emerald cut promise ring and I’m obsessed with it. step cuts have that something extra that other cuts don’t. I was really worried that I would be disappointed with the “lack of sparkle,” but alas, I AM NOT!

Agree w. PPs – the step cuts (like emerald and asscher) don’t sparkle as much, but they’re definitely gorgeous in their own way. I’d love to own an emerald or asscher diamond one day. For my engagement ring we picked a cushion (very sparkly) but I wouldn’t mind having a step cut in a different piece of jewelry one day! I think all diamonds sparkle slightly differently.. that’s the beauty of them. My cushion sparkles differently than a round, for example.
