I am going to the law ball in in February – and wondering what to wear! I haven’t been to the event before, but apparently it’s a big deal and fairly formal. It’s at a really nice historical venue and all the guys wear suits. My SO will be wearing a dark charcoal J Crew suit.
Here are some options I have:
I’ve worn this one before, it’s super comfy but i feel like it might not be very exciting. It will be a no brainer to accessorize.
this one is really flattering – i’ve never worn it! i’m less sure how to accessorize it, and I don’t know how ‘winter’ it is.
AH! huge photo, but i can’t figure out how to resize it! This was an insane ebay find, it’s a notte by marchesa gown. I realise that it’s white – but I sometimes do ‘winter white’ and I think it’s cute that it sort of plays on a ‘tuxedo’ theme for a formal event. It’s not a summer fabric, it’s 100% silk so that may help the winter factor.
I am a little concerned that in the Marchesa I may be the only one wearing a long dress – I find that outside of weddings, women don’t really go past the knees anymore!
Which would you choose?
FYI – it will be COLD, but I have a LOT of coats!

I would FOR SURE go with the white. My next choice is the 2nd dress.

I think that if it is as formal as you say then long is the way to go. I wouldn’t be too worried if you are one of the few ladies that wears a long dress because your white dress isn’t a ballgown. Plus it would be fun to accessorize!

The first two dresses are not formal enough for a ball, the white long gown all the way! Wear silver heels, and long silver earrings, and nice bracelet. No necklace since it will compete with the larger detail going up to the shoulder. And your hair in an updo, or partially up to show off the detail of the dress and earrings.

I think I would choose a long dress for this event, but I’m not sure I would choose that particular white dress. After Christmas, most major department stores will have beautiful, long, special-occasion dresses on sale, so you may be able to find something perfect for this event.

When you said it was a ball, my first thought was that the two short dresses were too informal. I’d definitely go with the long white dress. You’ll look elegant in it.

@CMSnails: very true, it’s not like it’s got a hoop or a train!
@mishagirls79: i love the idea of metallic heels and my hair up, thanks!
@Brielle: you’re right about the sales, i’ll check with my girlfriends to see what they’re wearing. some of them attended the event last year so they’ll have a better idea 🙂
thanks ladies, now i’m really excited about the event!
