Definitely flat – and I think that flat will be a little more forgiving with dirt and dust too

Can you do something in the middle like a semi-gloss? That’s what we did.

But if I have to pick out of the two, I would pick the flat. The high gloss is just too much. It shows scratches way more as well. We actually changed our floor downstairs from a high to a semi-gloss.

soy:  haha ok, yea it does kind of look like our floor, actually. Definitely the semi-gloss then.

ETA: I heard that it shows dust more easily on the Satin finish, which is actually more flat than the semi-gloss. I actually had a friend that chose the satin finish and redid it and chose a semi-gloss because it was too “flat” for her liking.

soy:  lol I’m sure! I prefer the semi-gloss personally. PP made a good point about scratches too. Our hard wood floors are a semi-gloss and I don’t feel like I have to run the vacuum or swiffer all the time. Granted ours are lighter than yours, which I’ve heard is a little more forgiving on the dust/dirt front (thank goodness!).

soy:  If you like the shiny, then go for it! I’m sure if you keep up with keeping it clean and stuff it won’t be scratched up badly.

soy:  Before we redid our floors I definitely thought I’d want a more “flat” or textured look. Well, we spent almost 2 hours in Lowes looking at all the different laminate options and we decided on the high gloss. I was still a little nervous about it, thinking it might look too fake, but once it was installed it looked awesome! We went over my BIL’s house a few weeks later and he has the flat/textured laminate and I knew I made the right choice. The flat/textured looked so much cheaper than ours and it was the same brand so I knew they were indeed comparable. Long story short, I much prefer the high gloss!

My husband refinishes and installs hardwood floors.  I have never seen him do one of those super shiney finishes.  Ever.

I also think the shiny is more expensive looking. It stands out as oppose to the dull (which we have)

MrsN14:  Really?  I think the super shiney ones look like the pre-finished ones, rather than the ones that have been snaded and stained by hand….
