I would choose #1. The benefits are really nice. It sucks that it’s only a 6 month contract but you said they’re very likely to hire you afterwards. Also, since it’s a national company, if you move you would likely be able to transfer within the company. Also, once you’re in the company it’s easier to get a job in another department so the fact that the job might be boring doesn’t mean you’re stuck there forever.

@RunnerBride13:  Go for the first one!  The benefits are good, and it’s likely you would get hired on.  It will look great on your resume!  I know you said it’s out of your expertise, but it’s good to push yourself and learn new things!

@RunnerBride13:  Job 1 for the benefits and resume booster and am sure you’ll get the full time position.  But, than again, don’t listen to me, I generally choose the less fulfilling option in favor of the benefits (i.e., work is called work for a reason).

@RunnerBride13:  Hm. I seem to be out numbered here but for me I would definitely choose job 2. What’s the point in resume building if it’s ultimately not really a career path you want to follow (based on the fact that you say the content is dry and it’s not what you’re looking for)? Go with the job that sets you up to move up in the industry you want to be in, even if it’s not with a big-name firm.

ETA: Just saw your last post and in that case, I would DEFINITELY go with job 2! It’s so hard to break into pharma at all (speaking from personal experience) so I would be more inclined to go with the job that gets your foot in the door if that’s what your ultimate goal is.

@RunnerBride13:  yeah I get that. My job isn’t what I’m interested in either but the benefits are too good to walk away. However, you can always look for another job (with a more established company) while you’re working at job #1. What does your husband think?

@RunnerBride13:  dang, I was hoping he was strongly leaning towards one or the other. I always fall on my husband when I can’t make up my mind haha.

Job #2—get in to a company to stay until YOU decide to leave.  I worked at a contract staffing firm for two years and still have a bad taste in my mouth for how they do business.

@RunnerBride13:  I would go with job number 2 – I like to stay busy and I’m always looking to get more focused in my field. I’ve also worked at jobs that had great benefits like the ones you mentioned, but no one ever used them because there was such pressure to work hard/overtime all the time. I also saw a lot of temporary contracts just keep getting extended as longer temp assignments instead of permanent.  Basically – I’d go with job 2, but probably because I’m bitter Wink

    100% number 2.

I tend to think more “long term career focused” vs. the “sounds good right now job.” Since number 2 is a) in your chosen field of work and b) what you actually want to do in the future, then that is your best choice.

Yes, there is some clout working for a big name company, however, what matters most are the skills and expertise you learned there, not the fact that you worked for a well known company.

@RunnerBride13:  I’d pick Job 2 for sure. I wouldn’t worry about if companies on the other side of the country recognize the name.
