Love #1. I think it may be the perfect mix of what you both want! I see both fine art and the whimsical photojournalistic style in the photos.

I’m with your Fi. #2 is my personal fav. I love how he captures emotion so well. He’s got great composition too.

#3 has boring and predictable shots. Nothing unique.

#1 would be my second choice, but I’m not fond of some of her editing.

I wasn’t a huge fan of number 1. It seemed to me that she took some less than falttering angles of the bride in the first link. I also didn’t like the focus in some of her close ups and I though she could have had a wider range of tones in her black and white work. She had quite a few over-blown whites as well.

The second one had some really interesting shots and is obviously familiar with not only the kind of wedding you are having but one of your potential locations as well which is a plus. His nature shots are great and since you are traveling to such beautiful place to marry, don’t you want that captured? Also I love what he did with the focus in this picture, it sweeps you right up into the expressions on their faces which really captures their emotions. I haven’t seen this before and I thought it was really unique and artistic.

Number three had lots of over-blown whites that lost detail as well. Her work was much more posey than the other two and I didn’t see many photojournalistic style photos. In the second link I felt like at least half of the photos I looked at were bride and groom looking at each other and I started to get bored.

I agree with your FI, I would pick number 2.

I voted Jonas Peterson.  When I looked at his shots I was smiling and I felt as if I were right there, at the wedding, feeling all the emotions.  And his exposures are correct.  He is expensive, but I think well worth it.

@peonyinparis:  Ok so I will say this – Jonas Peterson is great but it will be really important for you to figure out if his style speaks to you. He is priced INCREDIBLY high because he is “famous” in the photography world and amongst other photographers, but I honestly don’t think his work is any more compelling than other photographers out there.

Can I make an additional suggestion as a professional photographer? My DREAM wedding photographer is Jacki Bruniquel, and if you have the budget for Jonas you probably have it for her. She is absolutely INCREDIBLE and her images are not nearly as moody as Peterson’s. Check her out!

From these three, I initially thought that Natasja would be my favorite but I wasn’t that impressed with the friend’s wedding you shared compared to her pricing. Jemma is definitely channeling Jose Villa but the lack of reception images/moments really stood out to me in her blog. I wouldn’t have any idea about her ability to capture moments beautifully like she does portraits and controlled set ups. My best advice would be to ask to see full weddings from each of these photographers – it may help reveal some weaknesses and allow you to make a more informed decision.

they’re all lovely, and you surely wouldn’t be disappointed with any of them. seriously. they’re all obviously talented, and it’s going to be photos of YOUR wedding day…so, it’ll have whole bunches of emotion tied to it. 😀 i didn’t see the exposure inconsistencies people mentioned with one of the photographers, but i also didn’t go through her entire catalog.

i think you should skype with each photographer you’re considering and remember that you’re going to be spending the entire day with that person. you have connected with all of their images in some way, so see who you connect with on a personal level. (and if they can’t video chat with you personally…that’d be kind of an issue…at least for me.)
