@newloves1975: If the Playa resort is where I am thinking I have stayed there. The resort name is The Royal Hascienda's and it's really pretty. Where is the Secret's resort? Overall Playa is beautiful and more Mexican feeling then other places to go in Mexico (e.g. Cancun). The downtown area is really pretty with lots of shops and restaurants but not walkable from The Royal Hascienda and you have to take a taxi. The resort it's self is quiet. The beaches are beautiful. I would imagine they have a wedding coordinator that will help you through everything. I've seen weddings at other Royal Resorts in Cancun and they look very pretty situated on the beach. Mexico has had some trouble with their beaches with several hurricaines passing through in previous years, however, Playa as a whole has beautiful beaches and the soft sand you expect to find. The water is very calm and there are hardly any waves. The Royal Resorts is actually a time share chain and they have several other resorts in Cancun. The rooms are either one bedroom (typical hotel but I think they have a little mini kitchen) one bedroom suide (separate bedroom and then full living room and full kitchen) and then the full villa which is huge with two bedrooms, a living room and a full kitchen. Having the full suite is nice since it's lots of space to have people over. I have always found the staff and service at the Royals to be one of the best. The Royals as a company take very good care of their employees offering top pay and other incentives (education etc.) so the staff is very hard working, polite and acomodating. I would give them a call for more info. They are based out of Florida but all customer service in the Mexican resorts speak very good English. Good luck!!!!!!!
my sister has stayed at the Royal and has raved about it. she wanted me to do my wedding there (and so did i!), but it was out of our budget. However, i have also heard nothing but good things about all the Secrets resorts.
I went to a DW at the Aventura Spa Palace in the Riviera Maya. I've been back twice for vacation. It's absolute paradise.
My Resort is the Grand Sirenis in the Mayan Riviera. My Fi has been there already and its a pretty nice resort with a lot to offer. our planner brought it to our attention and knowing that one of us has already seen it and stayed there, it was really easy to decide. Good Luck
We're getting hitched at Moon Palace!! We have kids in the wedding party. If it was adults only, I'd have it at Le Blanc for sure!!
I am looking into Mexico. The Royal is kind of pricey but they do have another sister resort called the Gran Porto Real it's a lot more affordable.
@mrsbruff2b: The le blanc looks amazing but way out of our budget. Maybe one day I'll get to go there.
I just tentatively held my date at Secrets. I have 1 week to put down the deposit and secure it. I started reading a bunch of reviews, and while the Royal had fantastic reviews from guests, the ones from soon to be brides were pretty terrible. I know you can't always believe what you read, but then again, sometimes you can!
I'm looking into a destination wedding in the Riviera Maya. We have kids coming so the resort needs to be kid friendly.
So far I've nailed it down to: Dreams Cancun Riviera Maya, Barcelo Maya Palace Deluxe, Now Jade, or Now Sapphire.
I have a feeling that some of the group rates are gonna come back and be out of our budget, but we'll see...
For those who are planning, how did you decide on a resort?
Congratulations to you all and good luck with all your planning! If you are still looking for a Wedding Photographer, feel free to to take a look at my website at www.jessienicholephotography.com and make sure to check out the blog for the most recent weddings :) I have done Destination Wedding before in Hawaii and absolutley loved it and would love to have the opportunity to capture other bride's special day at a very affordable rate! As a recent bride myself, I know how tight budgets can get, so I try to keep my rates as lows as possible, but still offering high quality work! We are husband+wife team and in most cases we are willing to travel and photograph your wedding for free if you cover travel expeneses. In the past we have also just charged an affordable flat rate in order to cover the travel expeneses ourselves.
Looking forward to hopefully hearing from you :)

I am planning on a destination wedding and I have no idea where to even start. Did you just get in touch with resorts and find out their group rates, or did you find a travel agent to do the dirty work of obtaining quotes?
I am getting married at Secrets Maroma in May. So far, everything as far as planning has been super easy and fun. I am makin my own centerpieces and bringing some other decor from the states to save a little money. I'm very excited! We are using the resort DJ, photographer and I am doing my hair and makeup at the spa. We also really wanted an adults only wedding. I just searched tripadvisor over about a million times over to find the best and nicest resort to fit us. I didn't want a super huge place with 1000 rooms either. I wanted it a little smaller. Secrets maroma fit us the best.
If you have any questions about planning or anything, just ask.
I'll be getting married and staying at the Iberostar Grand Paraiso and I can't wait...we got really lucky and found a fantastic travel agent through American Express travel ( a friend suggested we try them). Now I just need to find a photographer!
@meredithilchert: We actually decided on Secrets Maroma and we are using the photographer they recommend Juan Navarro. He works with other resorts too and his prices seemed reasonable enough. If I had more in my photography budget I would have gone with La Luna, or Victor Herrera. Del Sol photography looks amazing too but too expensive for me.
This is probably a little late but I am getting married at Now Jade. So far everything has been pretty smooth and I have heard nothing but amazing things from other brides. Good luck with your wedding!!
@newloves1975: I was looking at those photographers too! Its a tough decision.

I thought I finally decided on Secrets Maroma Beach for my DW. Was getting ready to secure my date with the resort today! I feel like I have been researching resorts forever! I know I have been through all the resorts I was interested in numerous times, then this morning I start to look at The Royal Playa del Carmen. It is a little less than Secrets which would be a plus. So has anyone stayed at either of these or have any advise on which one to pick?
