I had never heard of the Emerson brand before. Quick google search shows they are a piece of crap. Go with the toshiba.
Emerson is a really low brand. IMO, Emerson is not going to last. I have had a few electronics from them in my broker days, I suggest you steer clear of Emerson and go with the Toshiba.
Out of those two... Toshiba is the one to buy. Emerson is almost a no-name product (the guys you never hear of)
When it comes to LCDs I believe that Sharp also makes a pretty good product.
And for top of the line look to Panasonic. Although I much prefer their Plasma series.
Hope this helps,
If in doubt and the specs are the same, go with the more well known brand. I vote Toshiba.
I'd go for a Toshiba. But Black Friday always has surprise sales, so you might find something even bigger and better. FI and I bought our 70" last year in the states for like, 70% off of its original price. We actually paid more for our (then) 40" when it was new.
@the_future_mrs-1: So far out of the 6 ad's released for Black Friday these were the ones we could afford between the sizes we wanted but theres a ton more at the 32 inch size under $200. Were looking for anything 36-40 inches no more than $225 with tax.
So if theres other brands anyone suggests I'm sure I could find one for under $200 in a smaller size (32 inches). Feel free to list those as well, I don't want to have to replace it anytime soon. I'm sure we'll be in line for 6 or more hours. lol
TIP - Besides being aware of the various brand names... go as BIG as you can afford. These big screen Tvs is one of those things you think are huge until you get them home and have them for awhile... then they don't seem quite so large.
We bought a 42 inch several years ago... and thought it was frickin GIGANTIC when we took it out of the box and put it in place.
But now... not so much. Just recently Mr TTR said, he might want to upgrade it to a 60 inch and move the 42 inch to our Bedroom.
LOL... Our current Tv is going to look ENORMOUS in the bedroom... as it will be hanging on the wall there (not on a stand) and be a lot closer to us as we view it in bed. That is an important factor too when it comes to size... you don't want to be sitting ontop of these Tvs. You need some space to get the full effect that they offer.
Hope this helps,
Between those two, the toshiba, but I personally wouldn't buy either (I'm more of a Sharp/Samsung/Sony girl myself). However, for less than $200, it won't be that devastating when it craps the bed in 2 years.
@happilyeverafter54: My husband's goal for the holidays last year was to find us a decently priced 32-inch TV. We didn't find anywhere near as good a deal as you have, so I would jump on that Toshiba if you can!
Toshiba is definitely way better than Emerson, but it is a doorbuster and is going to go super fast, you'll need to be quite early in the line to get one! Last year we had a 42" Sharp for around that price (same store as the Toshiba) and we only got 10. But they haven't released minimums for this year yet.
@this-time-round: I have a Sharp off brand flat screen that I love. It was like $100 (then again, I also got a discount because I worked there, and had gift cards).
Anyway, I'd go with the Toshiba one. And don't fall for that "this HDMI cable is better" bullshit. Monoprice has no-name cables that are exactly the same, for a fraction of what Monster Cable costs.
@Wonderstruck: The Toshiba is at Best Buy we waited there last year for 7 hours I think on a DSLR camera. It was worth the savings $1000 off our total! =D
The ad can be found here if anyone else is shopping around for anything:
http://blackfriday.com/stores/best-buy/flyers/black-friday
They also have a ton more released, I think they are just waiting on Target and Kohls and all the ads have officially been leaked.
@this-time-round: our livingroom is pretty small because we live in a condo, we have 7 or 8 feet between the couch and where the tv will be so we don't want to go too big. We went to Walmart to see what sizes would look best. Definitely 36-40 inches but 32 was nothing to look past either. =)
@Puffthemagicdragon: I hopee it lasts more than 2 years. =/ I had this big box low name brand for 9 years and my grandmother had it for 5 years before that and it still works perfectly. Guess I should keep it just in case. lol
@Gemstone: I was thinking the same thing because the originally price was over $400 on the Toshiba where as the original price was only $300 and something for the Emerson.
@vorpalette: thanks for the tip! I wish we could find one for $100! =D I saw a few $100 32inch tv's but they were Emerson.
@HappilyEverAfter54: I think we ended up with a Samsung 32" for about $350 (not on Black Friday). Also, it's a good size for our smaller living room (we're in an apartment), and of course, if we ever decide to upgrade in the future, the 32" is still an okay size for a bedroom.
@Gemstone: I don't think we'd ever get anything bigger than a 40inch even when we buy a house and have more room. I'm used to having my 36 inch now. I have a tiiiiny one in my bedroom lol 24 inches!!
OP, it depends on how much you watch it. A lower quality TV won't last as long as a higher quality brand but if you don't watch a ton of TV, you should be able to get quite a few years out of it (my guess is 3-5). If you're a heavy TV watcher then don't expect a $200 flat screen to last very long. Even at it's original price (which I looked up and is around $450, I believe), it's still on the low end for flat screens of that size. Regardless, under $200 for that TV is a good price. If I had the energy to wait in line on Black Friday for a chance at scoring one, I'd probably do it since we're looking to buy a flat screen for my parents for Christmas but I think we'll probably splurge a bit and get a better brand that will be delivered to our door.
@Puffthemagicdragon: Oh that's not good we always have the tv on. We just don't have a crazy amount to waste on a tv. Hmmm... now I'm not sure what to do. Thanks for letting me know. I would never ever even pay $450 for a tv lol. Thus the reason we were looking on Black friday.
@HappilyEverAfter54: I've seen the ad, this is my 6th Black Friday working at Best Buy, so that's why I thought I'd chime in and make sure you knew you'd have a pretty significant wait to get that deal, but sounds like you already know that and are prepared! The brand really isn't going to affect the lifespan of the TV...some of the crappy off-brands (Emerson and Westinghouse would be my primary two examples) are going to have crappy colors and contrast levels compared to a Samsung or Sony (Toshiba falls somewhere in the middle, but is way way better than the Emerson ot Westinghouse), but all LCD TVs pretty much have the same lifespan (about 60,000 hours).
Of course there are things that can go wrong with any of them before their lifespan is up, but since the TV is priced under $200 you could add on a 4 or 5yr protection plan for super cheap where if you have issues they'll fix or replace it (usually stuff just gets replaced because it's too expensive to fix, so then you'd get a new 40" Toshiba). The plan is based on the price of the TV so it should be a pretty good deal on that TV.
@Wonderstruck: Thank you so much that was soooo helpful! I think I'll go with the Toshiba then. Can I ask you another question? How are the LG Blu-ray players that are on sale for black friday? The 39.99 one that is on the cover. I think I might grab that as well. =D
@HappilyEverAfter54: I thought the bluray player was a Toshiba too, but not positive. I do remember that it said it was wifi ready (which is different from wi-fi built in). So my only advice on that is that it's a pretty good deal unless you plan on using web features like streaming Netflix. The wi-fi ready ones require an extra adapter to do this...and the adapter costs like $50-$90, so altogether you pay WAY more than just buying a bluray player that has wi-fi built into it. And doing firmware updates is a little bit more of a pain when it's not connected to the web, but you shouldn't have to do those too often.
@Wonderstruck: We just want to use it to play movies we have a router and all that already so nothing fancy. It was Toshiba LOL Walmart has the LG one. hahahah
@HappilyEverAfter54: Ohh gotcha lol. Yeah LG is better than Toshiba so I'd go with that one, sounds like a good deal!
@Wonderstruck: yeah the LG is $38 at Walmart. lol
Toshiba is definitely a way better brand than Emerson. I'd go with that one.
The Toshiba 50 inch for 399! =D Toshiba is definitely better than Emerson tho.
Toshiba definetley, I know they're great with laptops and altough I've heard of Emerson I think Toshiba has better reviews.
Also, when FI was looking into this a guy advised us to get LED over LCD, he said that the quality is better (altough you might not notice it) but they save power, so in the end end up paying themselves with the power you save, especially if it's a big screen. (but it might had been he was just trying to sell us a more expensive screen).
@pinkshoes: I wish I could afford that! =D It'd be too big for my livingroom though. I'd have to hang it in the dining room lol
@mrskmm: Were going to look at them in person now
@Miss Toadstool: lol yeah I've seen people do that because they were getting a commision. I would think if the LED is more expensive it's probably better though we just can't afford it haha.
Everyone says LEDs have a better picture, but really they're the same exact thing as an LCD but with a different backlight, it just makes it brighter. Really has nothing to do with the clarity, that's all based on the resolution and refresh rate and such. They do use less energy, but in a 40" size it's a difference of like maybe $20 a year so in that size ut would probably take a good 20 years for energy savings to match the price difference.
I feel like I'm being know it all-ish, sorry if it comes off that way, it just aggravates me when misinformed people, or ones who just care about their comission, trying to steer their customer in the wrong direction or talk them into spending more $$ than necessary, so I try to help people out when I can.
@Wonderstruck: We'll I'm glad you told me because if we walk into a store someday and someone tries to feed us some line about LED tv's I'll remember what you said! =D

We are buying a tv for Christmas and looking at Black Friday ads to get a better deal. I've come across 2 and was wondering which brand was better or if anyone had a good or bad experience with either? I just want to make sure these are good deals before we just go and buy one.
Theres a 40 inch Emerson Class LCD 1080p 60Hz HDTV for $198
&
Theres a 40 inch Toshiba LCD 1080p 60Hz HDTV for $180
I'm also waiting for 1 last store to release their BF ad but they usually don't have prices as good as these 2 stores so I thought I'd go ahead and ask now.
I'm sorry if this sounds really dumb, this is the first tv I'm buying. I've had the same one for the last 9 years (since I was 18) which was given to me lol.
