- Wedding: December 2010
Mr. Grape and I are planning for our larger reception next fall (and yes, we know everyone will attend because they’re already talking and asking about it ;D)–he has agreed to foot the bill for this since I paid for our smaller but slightly more expensive reception and wedding this year. My only requests are that some 40s music is played and I get to set up a candy buffet–done and done. Yay!
However, I’ve been thinking about ways to lighten the load for my hubby in terms of cost. One idea I have involves starting the reception later in the evening–around 7:30 or 8:00 instead of 6:30 and going only until 10:00 or 10:30 instead of 11:00–and serving light refreshments (light hors d’oevures), cake, and the candy buffet. We’d supply soft drinks (soda, iced tea, water, coffee, tea, and maybe punch) but either do a totally dry reception or have the option to buy a drink if someone really wants one (please, no lectures on this–it’s what works best for our family and we did a similar setup this year–no one complained, and everyone had a good time. Dry/cash/whatever is NOT up for debate here, so keep it out of this thread–thanks!).
The other option would involve the same beverage situation, but we’d start at our planned time (probably 6:30 or 7:00, since it’s on a Friday evening, and going until 11:00) and serve less formal food. There’s a great place around here that does woodfired pizzas and whatnot, so we’d get a variety of those and also offer some sort of sub or cocktail sandwich, in addition to the candy buffet.
I don’t think there’s enough cash in the budget to do everything (and that’s a TON of food, anyway), so we’ll have to make a decision at some point. I thought it would be interesting to do a poll, since Hubby likes to see the results, too.
With the short reception, the idea would be that dancing would begin almost immediately and guests could graze on the apps/cake/candy and whatnot. With the longer one, there would be a set “dinner” period (from probably 6:30-8:30 or something) with dancing beginning after that. Candy buffet would be available for grazing, but the actual food would be gone (to avoid health issues).
Which would you prefer in terms of food and length of reception?
