I went shopping this week with my MOH to find a dress to wear for our engagement shoot coming up right after Christmas. We’re looking at doing one casual outfit and one a little dressier.
While we were shopping, I found a cute red dress that I figured would be good for the dressier engagement photos, and one that is white with some navy trim that I also bought, figuring it would be good for bridal showers or a bachelorette party.
The rub is that my fiance, my mother, and basically any of the other friends I’ve showed the dresses or pictures of the dresses to vastly prefers the white dress. The problem is that I don’t recall seeing many engagment photos where the bride was wearing white. Is this a thing that isn’t done? Should I keep shopping for an engagement photo dress and save the white one for later?
PS – Sorry for my look, I didn’t know we were going shopping or I would have actually put on makeup and done something with my hair.

I like them both (I know, not helpful haha). Wear whichever one you feel the most comfortable in, there’s no “rule” that says you can’t wear white in your engagement photos! I love the white dress but personally I’d wear the red dress because, if you intend to hang engagement and wedding photos in your home (which most people do), you don’t have a bunch of professional photos taken at different times that all have you in white.

Both dresses look really nice! When we did our engagement shoot my photographer said it was best to not wear white and black (or what ever colour the grooms suit will be) as you will have your whole wedding album in the same colours. It’s not taboo or anything, I think she just wanted to help us keep the pictures looking different/seperate!
You’ll look great in which ever one you choose!

@jpr: No contest. The white one! The detail on the midriff is way flattering on you!

@jpr: They are both super cute, but I vote for the white one. Maybe because it pops more than the red?

I love white dresses for engagement pictures!!! I think they look “bridal.”

I think the red looks a bit…matronly.

I love the white dress! I’ve never heard that you’re not supposed to wear white for engagement photos but even if that was true, it has black on it..it doesn’t look like a wedding dress so you’re good to go!

I love the white dress on you, it’s super flattering!
But I’ll be wearing a white dress for my engagement photos, and a pale blush dress for my engagement party, so I see no problem with wearing bridal colours before the big day 🙂 I actually prefer to wear white because it’s a color that I won’t tire of, and because I want my photos to clearly be engagement-y! We can dress up and take photos anytime, but there is only a short period of time that I can wear white with a purpose.

Thanks for the advice ladies, although at 18 to 19 I’m possibly more confused now 😉 I think I’m going to take a day to get a little more dolled up, take pictures in both dresses, and send them to my photographer to see what she thinks!

they are both cute. i know that some people think it’s better not to photograph in white clothing because it can come out too bright in the pictures and be overwhelming. (although obviously everyone just deals with this for their wedding pics, LOL! =) ) but i would ask your photographer whether one color or the other photographs better.
