We use bistro/cafe lights inside our lanterns. I think this is easier and looks better than Christmas lights.
The least expensive places I found for paper lanterns were the Paper Lantern Store and Asian Ideas. As for lighting, if the Christmas lights are not LED lights, you may indeed have troubles with them being too hot. I did an article on other methods of lighting paper lanterns, if you are interested.

i got a bunch of smallish paper lanterns and i want to get some big ones too. to use in the decor. we have 40' high celings with rafters, i thought it would be really pretty to string white christmas lights in the rafters, and hang white, blue, silver, maybe orange paper lanterms as well kinda like this> but with lights.
my question, is if anyone has experience with stuffing christmas lights inside the lanters to make them glow. the ones i got already have little battery operated lights in them, but because the rafters are so high, it would be impossible to switch them all on the morning of the wedding after hanging them before hand. plugging in a strand of christmas lights however is doable.
my concern is with safety and the lanters getting too hot from the lights.
also i am looking to get some bigger ones as i said, where have you seen them for a good price?
