i got a macbook pro in august when i thought id be starting law school fulltime in sept (im goign to be an evening student now, may 2010)...
i definitely loved playing with it in the beginning, but with a fulltime job and new house to up keep...i rarely use it... they're def more reliable than pc laptops... BUT the price is DEFINITELY 3 or 4x PC laptops...
i say get what you can with a budget, there's so many deals with pc laptops right now that it's not even worth it to get an apple macbook unless you need certain software.. etc.
I have a netbook and I really like it. Totally portable (I can stick it in my purse) and completely affordable.
Do you mean netbooks? I would make sure to research them because I don't think hey have much storage space on them and you can only use a minimum number of programs on them. If you want to be able to use word, excel, and other programs other than the internet, I would consider getting a regular laptop. They are pretty comparable in price now and you will have more storage room for programs and documents.
I have an HP laptop but I don't use it much anymore. I hated traveling with it because it is so heavy. I will be getting a new Macbook or Macbook Pro soon. I did look at the Macbook Air but you give up to much just to have it be lightweight.
My friend has a Vaio that she traveled Europe with and she loves it.
BTW, I have an older Toshiba laptop (about 4 years old) that works really well except the battery is basically kaput. I'm considering getting another one but I don't really need it right now.
I have a dell laptop and I like it...but don't love the Vista oerating system. I also like my sister's HP.
If you're going to get a PC, get one with Microsoft 7!
I agree with others. Do not rely on the netbook taking care of MS Word, any type of picture editing software or games, or multiple tabs in IE/Firefox. It will eventually just be too much for it.
I would go with a really light but not too small computer if you like smaller ones, with a good processor (Think Intel Core2 Duo T6600 or above) that will be useful for at least three years. And at least 2GB of RAM, so you can have Word and Firefox/IE open at the same time, no problems. If you plan on using Photoshop or any serious Adobe products on it, go 3GB-4GB of RAM. This all sounds confusing to some, but just look at the specs on the computers you're looking at... you'll be able to match up my numbers.
I am considering HP, Mac, Dell and Vaio right now. I will probably get a Dell or Vaio since I'm getting a 24" iMac next year, but if you're looking for a machine with better performance, I'd stay away from Dell. I highly recommend Lenovo, just buy from the company and not through office/school (those prices are JACKED wayyyyy UP!!!)
Good luck!
I have a laptop. Its an HP with the full keyboard, so the number pad on the side. Have had some problems with it, but never had probs with my last one which was a compaq pressario.
I love our MacBook Pro. I had a Dell laptop before, and my husband had an HP. Both of those barely lasted us through college, and cost us a good amount to keep up with repairs during that time. Macs are expensive but so fast, come with a ton of memory and great features, have awesome support, and last a long time. If you can afford it, I would recommend a Mac.
As far as netbooks go, I think they're handy for travel and if you don't do a lot on your computer. But most (or all?) don't have cd/dvd drives (so all your programs basically have to be downloaded off the internet) and have very limited space for USB ports. I think our Acer only has 2 USB ports. I also find it difficult to use for long periods of time because of the small screen size and small keyboard. If you don't use it a ton or only it use for the same applications over and over again, a netbook is a great choice, though.
Wow - so many options and ideas! Thanks for the advice everyone.
I am mostly just interested in it for the internet. My desktop is where I would use the programs mostly, I'm just thinking of it for when I'm at home and I don't want to sit in the computer desk chair for 2 hours.
Hurts my butt :P
I'm definately not a techie. I'm able to understand basic specs well enough, but I don't get into it as much as some people.
I think a netbook would be a good choice if you are just using it for small amounts of time to surf the internet. That's pretty much what they were created for!
i'm currently on a dell laptop. it's my second laptop. my first one was a toshiba and that got me through college [i was an out of state student so schleping a desktop was not an option!] and then some before i finally got the itch for a new one, which was around the time my younger sister got her macbook before going to college, so that toshiba lasted about, 6-7 years. love my dell though. got it before vista came out so i avoided all that mess. i'm kind of ambivalent on whether i'm a pc or mac person. i'm of the mind that i'll get what i can afford and use whatever is available. just so happens that i needed a laptop now and the pc was what i could afford.
but i'm not one to give much advice on this stuff. i always defer to my resident techie, the guy. lol. but if you want to just be able to surf the web and stuff, a netbook should work great for you
I have a 3 year old macbook pro and an almost one year old HP netbook. The netbook was nice for classes (small!) to take notes on, etc, but it always takes a long time to load up (slow processor). I don't use it very much, but I like the almost full size keyboard. I like my macbook, except the screen is very small when I'm doing Creative Suite projects. I had no trouble using any of the tools without using a mouse (even though I have one). What I want to do is add a huge desk top to my arsenal. Of course, between FI and me, with our respective work computers (my desktop & his dell laptop w/ a docking station), we have 8 computers between the 2 of us. Add to that the laptops we bought for my mom, for my dad, and his mom and I think we're supporting the economy!
If you want something small, you might consider a powerhouse 10". If I could replace everything, I think I might go with a giant mac and a 13" macbook. Or another 15" macbook pro.
Yeah, that's probably what I will end up wtih (a netbook) because I'm not in school or anything, and if I ever do go back, I will probably work on my projects on the desktop so....
yay :)
Well, too bad that's not really in our Christmas budget this month :P
I have a 13 inch Macbook pro - love love love it! I "went mac" about 7 years ago and will never again buy a windows-based pc.
This is my second Mac laptop, I had a 12 inch iBook that lasted me 6 years, but the abuse of a puppy knocking it off of the coffee table multiple times a day was making it a little temperamental (the power supply was touchy).
I find the 13 inch Macbook is light, and easy to travel with (it actually even fits in my favourite Coach purse). The screen is big enough and it is powerful enough to do photo editing, I have edited some video on it, I use it constantly because it is my primary computer. Plus the new design is very sleek and smooth and the aluminum body is really durable and doesn't scratch.
Mac Book pro, baby. I love it, and while Mr. DG is always futzing with his PC, my computer works, is fast and generally makes me happy!
I have a 2 year old Macbook. I adore it. It still works great and does everything I need it to. And it's not too heavy that I have trouble transporting it to rehearsals and back.
If you're in the market then definitely go and have a play with some at a store somewhere. Being able to see how large the keyboard is and trying to type on it, playing with the weight, etc is something you can't do online and can be super important.
i have a first gen. 13" macbook that i loooove. i want a new one but i HATE the glossy screens :( my only complaint is that it's 3 years old and i have literally no battery life :(
I have a Macbook and I looove it! I'll never go back to my PC.
My only recommendation would be to stay away from Sony Vaio's. I know my Vaio desktop was horrible and I can name at least 5 friends who have had a miserable time keeping their Vaio laptops working.
If you are looking for a small laptop I would say a macbook. People say they are much more costly than a PC, but honestly my Dell laptop I'm on now cost around $1700 after all upgrades and warantees and it doesn't work nearly as well as our family iMac that cost the same amount.
I have a 3 1/2 year old IBM ThinkPad. It's a good little computer, but it's time for a new one. And by "new one" I do not mean a new PC. I'm going Mac, baby! I loooove working on a laptop, though. I actually kind of despise using desktop computers. The ease and portability of laptops totally wins me over. Maybe one day when we have a family and need a "family computer" we'll get a desktop, but by the time we have kids who know what they'll have invented.
Hi! I've got a Macbook and a Netbook. They're both great for different things. My mac is awesome with its 13 inch screen. I really love it. My netbook is what i bring to school with me. Both are good. But like another bee said, stay with in your budget.
Oh geez. Here come the mac apostles, ready to pounce at any chance to convert an unwary computer user! :P
JK, JK. I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 that I bought on my own dime when I started college, and it's been a fantastic little lappy. I spilled a whole glass of water on it once and it didn't suffer a bit of damage...go me! Sort of. :/
I don't really have the tech savvy that my SO does, but he has several computers (running on different versions of Windows, Linux, and Mac) and likes them for different things. It really depends on what you're going for.
I have one, and Mac Books are definitely the way to go! I had a Dell before, no comparison.
I have an old Mac PowerBook and a newer MacBook Pro. We like laptops because it means that you don't have to be isolated in the office room to use the computer.
REally babyboo? I have a Sony Vaio laptop and I love it. I haven't had any problems whatsoever. She's cotton candy pink with an matching mouse. I guess I've only had her for a year, but there haven't been any issues.
It really just depends on what you want to use it for. The Mac is really good to use for photo and video editing and the like. However, I think the windows operating system has closed the distance with the Windows 7 operating system. Just go to Best Buy and play around with the laptops there and decide. I have an HP desktop that I have had about 4 years and it's still going strong and still has plenty of disk space to spare. I have a Dell studion laptop that I have had since March and I LOVE it. My work laptop is also a Dell.
@bamm: you're the first person I've heard to like their Vaio for longer than a couple of months! haha :p but maybe that is because most people I know who have the Vaio had it die on them sometime after the one year mark :/
I've had a Dell Inspiron for 3 years and I love it. It's starting to get a little fussy so I think after Christmas I'll be getting a new one. I love my Dell but my husband has an HP laptop that's pretty nice too.
I have two! I haven't owned a desktop in about four years--I bought a huge, ridiculous-at-the-time laptop then, but it's pretty much obsolete now! ;) The second laptop came yesterday: a family friend didn't want his old netbook anymore because the keyboard was too small for him to use comfortably, so I got it for a ridiculous price. So much easier to carry around than the big one!
I have a Mac and I looove looove loooooove it, but it doesn't really sound like what you're looking for, if you really want a NetBook. From what I've heard/seen, the benefits of the NetBook are 1. portability and 2. affordability.
If you're thinking of this as a secondary computer (I assume you already have a desktop :D), I think a netbook can be a great choice, especially if you travel a lot or think you'd want to tote it around with you (seems like almost everywhere has free wifi these days!) on a regular basis.
If you're looking for a machine to use regularly though, in replacement of your pc, unless you travel a TON, I'd suggest getting a slightly larger notebook instead. Reasons being, the small size is not great for your hands/wrists or your eyes, from what I've heard not all software/websites/etc are compatible with NetBooks (and who knows when they will be), and you'll have to buy a lot of 'add ons' like an external CD drive, etc.
I have a macbook pro and it is amazing :)
TOTALLY a mac person!!!!!!
I have a MacBook Air & love it because I mostly use it for surfing the web on the couch. For doing projects and whatnot, though, I just use our iMac since it has such a huge monitor.

If I get another laptop it'll most likely be the MacBook Pro...I love my Macs!

I have a dell laptop (that I've had for 5 years). It's pretty much obsolete now, but It still works great, so I think it was worth the investment since it cost a few hundred more than HPs, Compaqs, and the like when I got it. It's just now on it's way out. When I replace it, I'd like to get a Macbook Pro, but that depends on my budget. If I can't afford a mac, I'll definitely be going for another Dell.
Whatever you do, make sure you stay away from Vista!
I have a 2007 model macbook. L-O-V-E it. Mac tech support alone is worth the extra money. When my computer started running slow this fall? they just replaced the hard drive. For free. In one day. Macbook FTW.
I had a Dell Inspiron that lasted 5.5 years - it worked quite well, but the harddrive just died on me a couple weeks ago :( I think that's the end! (Luckily everything was backed up)
We have a good desktop at home but I miss the portability of the laptop. I'd been wanting a new one for awhile and was holding off for Windows 7 - luckily it's been released now! I'm looking into different brands. One of my friends from work who is super into computers sent me this link comparing reliability in different brands:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/17/laptop-reliability-survey-asus-and-toshiba-win-hp-fails/
HP was the worst! Though some speculate it's because the "less savvy" users tend to buy these as it's such a popular brand, and they end up having more problems purely because they don't have as much knowledge for fixing things on their own. Who knows.. but I'm looking into the Asus brand now, in any case :) I also would like to find one that is lightweight, because I hate carrying around heavy laptops. I'll probably do more research over the holidays and maybe hit up some after-Christmas sales!
I have a netbook because I thought it would be cute, and it works for a lot of things but when I want to sit down and get work done, I would much rather have one of the larger MacBooks.
