Don't have any TV/Movie parents, but we do have our Pastors that both DH and I really look up too in marriage AND parenting.
They have that kind of marriage where 25+ years later he still looks at her totally smitten and can't help but smile like a goofy teenage boy.. This was absolutely fantastic seeing when 1 series they actually did all the sermons together on stage... every time it would be her turn he'd try and listen seriously but would just end up back with that goofy grin.. lol
They're great parents as well... 4 kids and all of them are wonderful teens & young adults. Don't exacerabte their kids, but are still firm and hold a high level of expectation in character. AND they're so involved in their lives... which says alot for being pastors of a large church.
They really are a great family to want to emmulate =)
This is going to date me, but I would chose the Huxtables from the Cosby Show!
I love the parents in Easy A. But I also dig the Huxtables!! Love me some Cosby Show.
@ohheavenlyday: i love roseanne :) they always kinda reminded me of my own family. Albeit to a much less exaggerated degree.
So she's a tv personality and therefore real but I love Laura Bennett's approach to parenting (Project Runway). She has a ton of kids but shes pretty laid back with them. Of course I will prob never have a giant apt in NYC (or a ton of kids). She used to write columns for the Daily Beast about how feeding your kid a PB&J sandwich on white bread will not turn them into sociopaths.
And duh, the Huxtables.
I also gotta say the Huxtibles. I love that family and I would love for me and FI to raise our future kid(s) with the grace, honestly and humor they did!!
I've always super admired Cliff and Claire! Always said I wanted a family like theirs- but without that many kids :) they were always tough but super fair, demanded respect but also let the kids be kids and have a lot of fun. Love them!
I also love the families from Modern Family- I think they are a more accurate portrayal of how families (who love and respect each other) are now.
@LGenz: i remember her! i liked her, but she did seem a little cold..
Not sure if reality TV counts, but I really LOVE Caroline Manzo from the Real Housewives of NJ :)
@jay0hwhy: I also agree with Lorelai!
And I love the Huxtables. I also kind of love the parents from "Mean Girls."
Apparently I need to go back and watch more Cosby Show! lol. Now that everyone says it I guess I can think back and I *think* I liked their style but I never watched that show much.
I always loved Jason and Maggie Seaver from Growing Pains! I liked their family dynamic-- dad worked from home, mom went back to work as the trailblazing reporter Maggie Malone! Good 80's TV for sure.
@ginabee98: And gotta love ohhhh my crush from back then Kirk Cameron..SWOON .
DH and I thought the same thing when we were watching Easy A!
Growing up, I wasn't choosy. I liked any parent I saw on TV or read about in a book that wasn't overprotective to the nth degree. Being an only child AND adopted, I felt a bit like Rapunzel sometimes.
@Miss Sapphire: YES. I strive to be like Tami Taylor in pretty much every aspect of my life, not just parenting. For example, I love her hair.
I just googled Tami Taylor and one of the top 10 google pages was top 10 reasons the blogger wanted to be a mom like her! haha. I actually have that show in my queue right now but I've only seen one episode. I might make it my next in line series :)
@CorgiTales: That show is amazing. I've heard from friends that they're hesitant to watch it because they're not into football, or they think it's all about teenagers, or whatever... but it's seriously one of the best-written and best-acted shows out there.
The Huxtables! My family was a little like the Winlows from Family Matters when growing up.
@ohheavenlyday: yes!! I used to watch this show with my mom all the time, and sometimes watch it on Nick at Nite. Reminds me a lot of my family :)
@Lozza: Hair, sunglasses, outlook with her husband. Then throw in a little pinch of Ari Gold's wife and you've got a perfect balance. I'd like Ari Gold's wife's shoes though over Tami's...
I'm gonna say the parents out of Seventh Heaven :-) They just seemed like such nice people who really cared about their family and their community.
@ginabee98: I second The Seavers from Growing Pains! I loved their family dynamics, the kids bickered but cared for each other. I also loved the Huxtables!
I LOVE Tami Taylor. Not such a huge fan of their parenting, though. I have a lot of respect for the Taylor marriage, but their parenting style is a bit old-fashioned and gender-driven for me.
My parenting role models are Adam and Christina on "Parenthood." I plan to work, so the whole SAHM mom thing won't be happening, but I love the way they talk things over with each other, present a unified front, and let their kids know when they screw up. I like that they don't always have the answers. The scene with Christina and Hattie when C tells H how she lost her virginity was one of the most moving things I have ever seen on tv.

So we're not super close to having kids but we talk all the time about the kind of parents we think (I know you current parents are laughing at me) we'll be when we do. We were watching Easy A last week and decided thats exactly the kind of parents we'd want to be. They just seem really involved and blunt about things without being overprotective at all. I kind of subscribe to the "free range kids" way of thinking. Of course this is all subject to change once we would actually have kids!
So I'm curious... if you don't have kids: What tv/movie parents do you think you'd like to emulate?
If you do have kids: What tv/movie parents did you think you would emulate? Were you right?
