@bunting: It happens at my work too. We will leave things in the back if we're having a food fest, but people who don't usually work on our unit will come over and take some of our food without asking. It's definitely frustrating. We do offer if we have a ton, so they could wait.
@bunting: Haha literally my response after reading your post was "Who does that?!!" so you nailed that one. ;)
ETA: Just thought of one. My aunt stopped by to visit and before she left she grabbed a drink of juice. Before she left I said "Let me find you a disposable Solo cup." She replied "That's ok." and walked out the door and took the juice, glass and all, with her. She got in her car and drove 45 minutes home. I've never seen the glass again.
@MissPumpkinPie: The funny thing is that there are only 3 employees (myself included) and we have the entire building to ourselves. I guess he just feels really comfortable here?
@BoiledPNut: I'm sure we would have given it to him had he asked, but still, I feel robbed! Okay, not really, but still.
@BayStateBride: Whaaat? That's a good one. Haha, you should go visit her sometime and do the same thing with the same glass!
It's nervy enough to take one without asking, but the last one? Wow!
When we have food/snacks in the office I make sure to take one even if I won't eat it until later... 'cause people in my group will take the last one and leave the box there. I know they're in the group so they're entitled to it, but still, throw out the box then, you know?
Our company's rule is if it's left unattended in the kitchen it's fair game. Should have gotten there sooner.
Omg, I *just* had one happen like 2 minutes after reading your thread!
On Friday at work, one of my coworker uses his whiteboard for games of Hangman throughout the day. Usually we wait until everyone has guessed what it is to reveal, since people obviously can't all be together at once.
There's this one old curmudgeon who twice now has come by and just SHOUTED the answer out in front of people still trying to puzzle it out. Seriously?!
You do not get a cookie.
Our FedEx guy helped himself all the time. Filled up his coffee mug every day, and would take any pizza/donuts/muffins etc... that was sitting on the counter in the kitchen. I bet it's sold as an "intangible benefit" when interviewing for the job :)
@tiki429: Yeah, but the mailman doesn't qualify as a company employee. I wouldn't bring a delivery to someone's office and assume I can help myself to snacks in their breakroom or other clearly employees-only areas.
@tiki429: Pssh, it's not fair game for the post man no matter where it is!
The attorney who works next door to us comes over any time we order pizza. It drives everyone insane that we all chip in and pay for it, and then he comes over and enjoys a free lunch. We've started locking all the doors when we order pizza.
I worked at a real estate office and this happened ALL the time! STRANGERS would try to come in and take some! I can't imagine being that person.
@Over the Moon: Nothing like getting excited about the prospect of a treat only to realize the box is empty!
@jocember: How mean! Also, I totally had to look up the definition of 'curmudgeon'. I'm excited to add it to my vocabulary now. :D
@MissNoodles: Hmm, maybe it is written as a job benefit for them. I bet they have some good eatin' if that's the case.
I guess it would depend how things are set up & how in his face the food was... At any rate, the *last* one? For shame.
My rant of the day is people not holding the elevator when you're five feet away. You know they see you walking up. You even make eye contact half the time. REALLY? Is it that uncomfortable for you to be within six feet of someone else for less than 30 seconds that you can't be even remotely courteous? I always say, "Hey, yeah, thanks!" That is, if I'm not able to push the button quickly, get on, then give them the evil eye. Ha
@MissBoPeep: That one takes the cake. Or pizza, lol. It's one thing when the food is free, but to have put money toward it and then have a free-loading neighbor come and eat some too? That would drive me insane as well.
@Juliepants: Ugh! I know some companies have a spread out for their customers as a complimentary thing, but usually it's pretty obvious when customers are welcome to that food or not. :c
@Mouse217: Yeah, if they were set out on a platter on the counter I can understand how one might think it were fair game. But these were in a box. With a closed lid. Tucked behind a pillar and out of sight of customers (but still within sight of where he drops off mail). I don't ride elevators too much, but that would get me, too. On one occasion I swear I saw the person pressing the 'close door' button as I approached, though.
Oh, I have one! One time I brought a big bottle of juice to drink throughout the week instead of buying those single serve things because I was being cheap. I put it in the fridge and by the middle of the day when I went to go get a glass. Someone had already helped themselves and just about emptied it. Now, I know I should have known better but who just takes stuff that isn't theirs! Really!!!?
I figured it out the next day who did it, what makes it worse is it was a guy and his wife that also worked there. They BOTH knew they didn't BRING it so wtf? This was also the guy that ALWAYS complained that people would steal his soda cans he'd put in there. UGH!
EDIT: It was the UPS guy that would come take drinks out of the fridge durning his evening pickup! LOL

So this is just a silly little rant, but I thought it might be fun to hear about what other odd behaviors people have witnessed.
Yesterday one of our customers brought us some delicious thank-you pastries from an amazing and well-known local bakery. I love it when customers bring us food!
There was one extra pastry, and I was looking forward to splitting it with another co-worker. Well, I just found out that it is no longer with us. Our mailman came in, saw the box on our back counter, helped himself without asking, and walked away with that piece of baked heaven. WTF? Who does that? We are not the type of company to have free-for-all-food out all the time.
I'm trying to tell myself (and my rumbling tummy) that he was having the worst day ever and that pastry was the only way to make everything bearable again.
But seriously. Didn't even ask or say anything. My hungry co-worker and I are a bit dumfounded. Has anyone else witnessed somebody do something that made them say, "Really? Who does that?"
