I recall reading about a lovely bee who mentioned getting her set on ebay, only to find out it was worth much, much more. I just left the jeweler, and boy am I happy.
i got my dream ring on etsy (well, I didn’t know it was my dream ring, I just fell in love immediately). It looked like a great deal, and after a lot of back and forth with the seller, we decided to purchase it (well, my bf did.)
when we got it, I ran to the jeweler and it was all legit; she mentioned a price double of what I paid, and said that it would have been a great deal at that price (!!!) I was so excited! Fast forward a few months, I just got the formal appraisal done and I’m still in shock at how lucky we got.
share great online buying experiences if you have any!

Mine is from brilliance.com and was appraised almost double what he paid. Kind of related- I bought a ring from a market in Mumbai for about $2 while on vacation. Found out later it was real gold and diamonds. Surprise!

Zelda1: What kind of appraisal did you get? Not to burst your bubble or anything, but most appraisals are for insurance purposes and appraisers will appraise it for about double (or 100% above) it’s cost/retail. It’s a fairly common practice.
But anywho, to answer your question, I did not buy my ring online, I bought it at Jared’s and an independent appraiser valued it at about double the purchase price.

bmo88: I totally agree with what you mentioned. However, i first went to get it looked at right after the delivery, to make sure I was not sent broken glass or a CZ; during that process, she quoted double the price he paid would have still been a bargain.
She then appraised it today for insurance purposes, for much higher than that.
