If you're going to do it, set a goal mileage-wise. I set a goal to use my recumbent bike to "go" 250 miles one month (it was the mileage between my college and my house... I "tracked" myself on a chart) and I actually was really motivated to do it! I never touch the workout machines now though... We have an elliptical, treadmill, bike, weight machine (one of those all-in-one kinds),DVDs, an exercise ball, jump rope, you name it! There's even the nice TV in there and still... nope. But I could walk around the local gardens all day... so do what suits YOU best!
i loved loved loved my elliptical trainer... i use to call it my epileptic machine because im so uncordinated and i can never spell it by its correct name and then one day it broke... i was heartbroken
been thinking of getting a new one but a better model, maybe once my foot injury heals
@cinemaparadiso - Thanks again for the helpful tips! Great idea about the mileage you're so creative! I like working out once I am at the gym, but hate getting ready for it. If that makes any sense at all! I think it would work for me, but who knows! I guess I should buy somewhere with a 3 month return policy..haha!
we got a great price on a precor elliptical-we've been bad about using it regularly...but it does get some use!
My mom got a treadmill for Christmas 'from' my dad when I was a little kid, and she runs on it five days a week. She tape records (yeah, no tivo at their house... just the 15 year old vcr) her soap opera every day while she's at work and watches it the next morning at like 4am when she runs.
We have road bikes and have one of those machines that you can hook your bike up to inside so the back wheel just spins while you pedal, I think it's called a trainer.
But we both use it in the winter or really rainy days and watch tv or movies or whatever.
I'm also trying to convince my husband of an elliptical. Post wedding we have gained some weight and we also got our cable back after having it off for a year and half to save money for the wedding which seems like bad timing with winter around the corner. I've found myself watching hours of HGTV (I figure I can make that very useful on an ellipitcal)! I have a hard time getting up for the gym in the morning in the winter. We also live in a condo so space is an issue - wish I could just 'rent' exercise equipment for the winter! :-)
No way - not enough room in my apartment! I know if you have the room that bowflexes are great...but I prefer to do things the old fashion way...working out solo under my own power!
But, if I did have a machine, I probably wouldn't use it!
I had a treadclimber in my old apartment. Unfortunately the way the room was set up I couldn't fit it anywhere so that I would be able to watch TV when I was on it so it didn't get much use. I ended up having to fire sale sell it and only got $10 for it because I couldn't provide transportation for it. Sucked too much that I'm afraid to do that again.
yep, i've got an elliptical trainer in the back room of our apartment.. and i've gotta say, i actually use it!! i have weeks where it doesn't get used (my own laziness with working out ), but overall i have used it regularly for 3 years and its been worth every penny i saved for it!
i'm thinking maybe in 2 years i'll give this one to my sis and get a brand new one. Totally worth the convenience. (driving to the gym always swayed me from working out at times..now theres no excuse!)
I came up with a solution to cure my obsession with getting an elliptical this winter and to test whether or not it's something I'd give up on after getting. My parents happen to have a recumbent bike that is only a few years old. And of course...they don't use it anymore. Even though it's not an ellipitcal I think it serves the same function of what I'm trying to achieve. I've asked to borrow it from them for the winter - this way I get something to work out on for those times I just can't drag myself to the gym in the super cold weather and I'll find out, at no cost to me, whether or not a piece of exercise equipment is worth the purchase. I live in a single floor condo so the thing is gonna have to go right next to our couches....not the prettiest but not sure how I can ignore it when it's going to be in my line of site whenever I'm watching tv. We'll see!!
We can't wait to buy an elliptical! I think I can swing short sessions, but honestly, the time it takes to drive TO the gym and back eats up too much time and it deters me from going sometimes.
I've had a treadmill in the basement and used it off and on for years. When hubby moved in, we added an exercize bike and punching bag. We love working out together... we go down to the basement and I hop on the treadmill while he rotates between the bike & punching bag. We always watch TV while we do it. It's a great way to motivate & spend time together!
I want to buy one of those smaller, non-electric treadmills just so I can walk on it while watching TV, instead of sitting on my butt. I would love to buy a treadclimber or an elliptical, but we live on the top floor of our building and, having been the annoyed downstairs neighbor in the past, I wouldn't want to bother our downstairs neighbors with any noise that it might create. I go to a gym that's a five-minute walk from our apartment anyway.
I love ellipticals! I think, as other posters have mentioned, you need to set a goal for yourself for it to be worth it. Back when I lived with my parents, they had a treadmill, and I told myself that I had to keep moving on it through every episode of TV that I taped to watch, which was usually three shows a week. Now I'd up it, but then I was out of shape!
We actually have an exercise room in our apt, but I don't get up there as much as I should because it's on the 39th floor and I'm terrified of elevators. Seriously, I flip out every time one shudders. I don't know why, but I can get on them for short trips (we live on the 7th floor) but going up (and down) 39 floors just freaks me out.
I would recomend a treadmill because it will allow you to build up your fitness and then maybe run outside which is heaps more enjoyable.
I have an eliptical machine which is OK and i use sometimes. I really want a treadmill i feel like i would use it more.
make sure you know and like the EXACT machine you're buying. I bought an exercise bike and didn't realize how loud it was. I hate it, never use it. Hang laundry on it to dry.
I don't know if this "counts" but I have an exercise bike (I have some ankle issues so ellipticals and treadmills aren't nice to me...lol) and I love it
We had an elliptical in our old apartment and though I used it every once in a while it was NOT worth it! Unless you spend a good bit of money (around $400-500 at least) the elliptical will be wobbly and will not be a fun work out!! I would recommend a treadmill if you are going to get an exercise machine for in the home
I have an exercie bicycle...but I rarely use it...but I have to start...

Do any of you have an exercise machine in your home, and actually use it?
I am trying to talk FI into getting an elliptical trainer that I can put in our movie room, so I can use it while I am watching movies, shows, whatever. (Thanks Tyra Banks show for the idea!)
