@Lolasmomma:  I don’t know that it *really* matters.

I loved Wicked and probably hadn’t seen the Wizard of Oz for 5 years or so when I saw the musical.

I don’t think you need to rewatch it, but I don’t think it’d hurt anything to rewatch it. Plus it’s such a good/fun movie to watch anyway!

No need to watch unless you want to. Such a fun musical!

You could watch it if you want, but the show definitely stands on its own. I loved it!

Wicked is one of my all time fav’s but I really don’t see any point in watching the movie unless you want to.

I’ve seen it three times 🙂 LOVE IT

ETA: No, you don’t need to freshen up on the Wizard of Oz as long as you remember the basic characters, and even that only helps you notice small things, you’d still understand the storyline on its own.

I saw Wicked in London. Loved it! It certainly can’t hurt to watch the Wizard of Oz before you go, but I don’t think it’s a requirement.

I’ve seen it 3 times as well!  It’s awesome.  You don’t need to see the Wizard of oz as a refresher since it’s only loosely based on it.

I saw it last year. Best show I’ve ever seen. Broadway, that is. Enjoy! Also, if you want to have background info on the plot (only loosely though) I would check out the book by the same title by Gregory Maguire. The show is based on this book, but the book is a LOT darker 😉 still enjoyable.

I don’t know about necessarily seeing “The Wizard of Oz” before because things are so different. I LOVED it, though. And then after we went to Vintage for martinis… So delightful.

Wizard of Oz won’t do ANYTHING to help you get through Wicked, but hey its a good movie so why not?!

If you ever read the book Wicked it’s like nothing you’d expect.  It’s extremely dark, political, handles racism and genocide… it’s really something.  The musical kind of touches on a lot of the details but it doesn’t really come close.  BUT!  Wicked the musical is absolutely amazing, I’ve seen it twice!  The music, the sets, the story line, it’s fantastic.

I don’t think it matters if you’ve seen the Wizard of Oz or not. It’s a great musical overall though. Definitely in my top 3.
