I’ve been working on a few things that I’m now comfortable to start selling on Etsy, but I wanted to get some of your experiences first. If you are comfortable sharing, please do. I guess eBay is also an option.
So why did you choose Etsy over eBay? Or are you doing both?
How much does Etsy charge?
Do you have to have a “business” set up with your state/IRS for tax purposes?
How much are you selling? Items? Income amount?
How do you get paid? How often?
Do you love it? Or do you regret selling stuff on it?
Anything else I need to consider before I set up an account?
Thanks for your input/insight.

I don’t sell on Etsy or anything, but I’ve considered it once or twice. I’m hoping some people reply, I’d be interested to see their responses!

I don’t sell on Etsy (considering it) but I do know about taxes. You might not have to incorporate your business but if you have a profit or loss, you will need to file a Schedule C for your taxes.

@MrsSaltWaterTaffy: Thanks. I figured Etsy would report payouts to the IRS and that it would need to be reported for taxes. Schedule C makes the most sense.

Okay, here’s the deal with Etsy, they don’t charge very much for you to list or even when you sell. BUT to get a market and to get selling is terribly hard. What do you plan to sell? I do crochet, and every once in a blue moon, I’ll get a random order from someone other than the people I know through FB or whatever. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with giving it a go–placing a few items up there and seeing what you get, but I haven’t had a big “boom” of business from listing on there.

@Peffy: Thanks for your input, Peffy. I figure I’ll give it a go. I’m not planning on making a living off of my etsy stuff, but every little bit helps. 🙂

i have a store on etsy however im “on vacation” from selling right now so to answer your questions:
So why did you choose Etsy over eBay? Or are you doing both? only etsy, and its easier to me
How much does Etsy charge? 20 cents to list and then they take a small percentage once you sell the item. they only take the percentage IF you sell, and the total comes out at the end of the month ith your “bill”
Do you have to have a “business” set up with your state/IRS for tax purposes? i didnt.
How much are you selling? Items? Income amount? this all depends on what youre selling, how much your items are, and how much promote yourself, so this really depends on you. i would promote on fb, instagram, twitter, dedicated pages that would showcase the merchandise and direct them to my etsy page,
How do you get paid? How often? its been a while since i sold, so i cant remember how often the payments were.
Do you love it? Or do you regret selling stuff on it? i loved it, it was a passion of mine
Anything else I need to consider before I set up an account? you have to have the time and patience, depending on what youre selling, you have to have the time to take nice pics to showcae your items, make them stand out, know how to be very descriptive, have competitive pricing, i would always search for similar items to see how others are pricing. its very time consuming, so you have to be dedicated to doing it. i wish you good luck!
