We closed on our house in October, built a fence and trimmed the bushes. (All we could do before the snow began). Now I have cabin fever and am dying to start my spring garden!

I'd love to do sweet potato vine on our driveway retaining wall like this:

And have hubby build me a raised vegetable bed for the backyard:

    Anybody else?

Me me me! I'm a bit addicted to being outside. I'd like to plant wildflower, bulb flowers, and fruits/veggies in the garden plots this year. I've also been relandscaping the monstrous backyard since last spring. :)

@minutiae-  I would LOVE to eventually get naturalized daffodil bulbs planted all over the hillside that comprises the view out my kitchen window!

I love the bachelor buttons and cosmos in your post too; my mom always plants those. :)

Cosmos are one of my favorites. I can pretty much throw the seeds on the ground and get blooms for months. I haven't tried bulbs yet, and I think I've missed the season for them, but they're definitely on my to-do list! :)

We own a condo with a lovely little porch, i bought the kind of planters that go over the wall, so we have an entire planter of basil, one of bouganvilla, one of chili peppers, and another of seasonal flowers :o) I LOVE gardening!

My mom also does (in addition to cosmos) orange calendula. She bought a package of the seeds at a Dollar General store YEARS ago for $0.10 and they have re-seeded and come back every year bigger and better.

@tara- our house came with an old rose bush in the back. I'm assuming it's old because the roses actually smell amazing! it's pretty small and scraggly but was still making roses in November!! Do you have any tips of what I should do with it this winter?? Should I cut it down to grow back in spring?? It's up against the house, under the eaves so it's pretty protected.

I want to, and right now I'm planning on planting mesclun, spinach, squash, and ??? I forgot the fourth one, and maybe zucchini, if I can find some seeds.

My mom wants me to plant EVERYTHING so she can come take it, but I'm trying to only plant things that I know I will use.

BF doesn't like tomatoes, is iffy on cucumbers, and half of the things I'd want to grow, he doesn't really care for.

My goal for February is to build something to scare off the deer, birds, and rodents that frequent my yard.  I'm thinking of making something solar powered, a radio and strobe light that go off when something triggers a sensor.  I met a man who said he left a radio on all night and that kept them away, but I think they would get used to a radio being left on all night.

I can't wait to start my balcony garden again! FI surprised me with a big planter and a bunch of herbs and strawberry plants last year and I loved it. This year I have a meyer lemon waiting to get back outside, and I might pick up a second planter for more herbs or maybe some flowers.

We closed in late May and my dad came by to help us plant a garden in August. So far we have  enjoyed rosemary, parsley, tomatos, eggplant, bell pepper, and basil. I've killed off the roses though.  Never had much luck with strawberries in the past. Is there some kind of secrets you guys like? I was given a worm bin last month. I hope they stay alive!

We moved in to our house and it has 5 gardens and bushes to trim all over the property! We decided that this year we are getting rid of 2 gardens that take up too much of our yard and the wood around them was never treated so it's warped and has lots of ants and nasty spiders in them and in general falling apart. FI is going to build me a new smaller raised garden for veggies since for the last 2 years we plant to fill up the old garden and things go to waste Undecided

But I do love planting my flowers and plants out front and we have lovely flowers in 2 gardens that come up each year w/out any tending on our end. I do want to plant sunflower seeds this year since I have been wanting to do that for 2 years. Here is our garden that will be no more. And the small front mound of flowers (this was the first year, last year it had much more elaborate flowers!)

I am definitely doing something this year! Although last year we had huge flower gardens, and a veggie garden that was 240 sq ft......but this year I have like a 12 sq ft box, its kinda sad, lol. So I will be going to my grandpas and doing all the work over there! I've had a garden every single year of my life htough.

I plan on starting a small balcony garden.  Unfortunately, my balcony gets 0 direct sunlight, so I will have to research what plants will work ok out there.

I can't wait to plant my graden. I am only two or three weeks from the spring plants (love California).

We have a small, urban lot. However, there is a three feet wide, 40 feet long strip between the fence and the driveway which gets the best sun, so we do intense gardening there. Last year we have a gazillion tomatoes, lots of eggplant, decent number of squash, and a meh crop of green beens, peppers, and banana peppers.

This year we are doing fewer eggplants (only so much you can eat) and adding more greens. Yay!

We close on our house in 18 days and I am already planning our garden.  I think we will do a variety of tomotoes, peppers, zucchini, squash and pots of herbs around our deck.  It will be nice not dropping so much on produce each week during the summer.  We tend to buy TONS in the warmer months.

I can't wait til we (hopefully) get this house and I can do a garden! I had one last year but only got cucumbers and a gigantic pumpkin out of it.  There's a lot of clay in our soil, but i"m going to start composting soon so hopefully that will help us with the soil issue

We're building our first garden this spring!!!

Apartment living in Manhattan certainly has it's plusses, but one of it's big drawbacks is a lack of yard - except FI & I managed to score a 1st floor apt last month with a 12x24 patch of cement to call our own!  Sure there's no grass, but FI is going to build a box so we can make a garden and grow our own veggies.  SOOOOooooo excited!!!!

    Now to learn how...

I'll be rocking a little herb garden on our apartment balcony, but that and our succulent is all we can handle right now.  I can't wait to get a house and plant some veggies!  I know it's a time investment, but I'm really looking forward to growing my own asparagus.

It is almost time! FI's favorite summer hobby is competing with his Gram for biggest potato or biggest watermelon etc. Last year, we had one row of potatoes in the ground (in still frosty Pennsylvania that FI dug by hand!) at the end of February/first week of March! Granted, our "veggie patch" is over half an acre. Last year, we expanded into another section about half as big as that on the other side of the barn so that the vines could have their own area. We plant 60+ tomatoes, lettuces, peas, beans, peppers, onions, brussel sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and of course, sweet corn! We freeze and can. Good luck to everyone on a good return this year! Last year we VERY wet here, and a lot of stuff didn't turn out well or didn't keep well.

I wanted to plant one, but the place I had picked out is (I think) where the city buried our power lines. I don't wanna get electrocuted (or mess up our lines)! So I don't know what I'll do. Our growing season here is pretty short too so I don't know how successful my attempt will be..

    @JoJo Bananas,
Are those flowers from your garden? If so, beautiful!!!

FI and I had a small 3x5 vegetable garden the last two years. I think the location was not so great because the only thing that would really grow there were tomatoes. We had LOTS of tomatoes!!
Peppers (green, red, yellow, hot ) do really well in pots.
Yesterday we started cleaning up our yard and there's a whole 10x3 bed that we're digging up and transplanting all the flowers (rose bush, hostas, day lilies) and give some to my friend and putting the vegetable garden there instead. That spots gets way more sunlight.

The key to planting vegetables in the short seasons (like NE!) is to start the seeds indoor. We did that last year and it didn't work so well for us because it was just a crappy season weather wise. I think this year we're going back to getting established seedlings from the local nursery.

We have SO many rosebushes on our property because FI's grandma loved roses.

We did a lot of work on the front yard two years back and made a kidney shaped island. The seeds I planted two years back are finally showing up this year!

I do love gardening but it gets SO expensive!! All the darn mulch!

@maryjane: Have you thought about building a raised flower bed? One of those should be high enough to allow you to dig around and still avoid the powerlines. :)

I think I have a flower problem. Aside from the cosmos and bachelor buttons, I also have seeds/bulbs for two mixes of wildflowers, two types of sweet pea, lavender, moonflowers, lily of the valley, blue and white Dutch irises, marigolds, baby's breath, sweet william, two types of poppies; not to mention the parsley, oregano, tomatoes, and watermelon! Ack!

I planted tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapenos and various herbs outside for this Spring. I'm hoping we don't get the massive spider mite attack on our plants like we did last year. Ugh...

We put some annuals in the front yard too, along with the azaleas, hydrangeas that were already there. :)

It's still so crazy to me to see all of these gardening plans that were posted 2 months ago!  It just started staying warm enough last week that I felt comfortable setting up some containers, nothing fancy so far just pansies and a peony.  We just bought our place a couple months ago and I'm pretty excited to see what comes up in the front garden.  What I thought were daisies are definitely not and I've never seen anything like the climbing vines that are coming back.  Their seeds from last year look like little Dr. Seuss truffula trees!

I can't believe I forgot about cosmos!  I definitely need to get some of those out there!

yay I have! I actually started my project about 2 weeks ago so right now I only have buds coming up.  But our front yard was a mess of dirt and more dirt so we dug it up and planted grass seed and there was a seperate flower bed where I got tons of wildflowers and planted them throughout...I can't wait to see them come up fully in a month or two!

Time to plant my flowers in about a week or two. I plant petunias out back and impatiens out front (no sun, all shade). My impatiens did great the last two years. I would like some more shady flowers for a variety though.

Good luck with all of your flowers and veggies everyone!

We're getting married in a few weeks, so i'm only de-weeding right now.  We are giving away herbs as our wedding favour, so i anticipate we'll have alot of herbs left over after the wedding.  i'd like to start planting around end of June when we are back from our honeymoon.  This is also our first spring at our house, so i'm interested to see what comes up.  so far we have tulips, lilly of the valley and some pink flower.  i hope to add some hostas to the backyard.

I have planted a crepe myrtle tree (I think I spelled that right) along with tulips, some gerbera daisies, and a few different types of perennials in the front yard. I even planted a few strawberry plants in one of the front flower beds.

My daughter wants to do a garden so this weekend we are doing a raised veggie garden and buying seedlings instead of seeds. She wants cucumbers, squash, zucchini squash, tomatos, canteloup, watermelon, and red potatoes. Ambitious...but if we only do a few mounds of each, it will still end up being pretty small. I love working in the yard so I am looking forward to getting started.

I planted my impatiens last Saturday. They look great and are just starting to really grow and then I find out today that we are having an unusual cold front and a frost tonight (going down to 35 here in Southeast PA!)...do I really need to cover them with a blanket or do you all think they'll be OK? Anybody ever had to cover their flowers? Thanks!
