If you're requiring that they get it done, you should pay for it. If it's optional, they can pay for it.
I'm paying for my bridesmaids hair and makeup because my hair and makeup artists have a flat fee for up to 7 people.
I'm not sure what's customary, but I think if the bride is requiring it then she should pay. I gave my girls the option - all 3 got their makeup done but only 1 got her hair done (the others had super short hair). I wouldn't have minded too much if they chose not to have it done, but it was cool to see them all with some fabulous makeup and getting pampered a bit :) Plus I think it will look great in the photos. But I didn't want it enough to pay for all 3 of them to have it done either!
I agree with the PPs. If it's required, the bride should pay. If they get a choice, they can decide whether or not they want to pay for it.
If you want them to get it profesionally done, then the bride (or whoever is paying for the wedding) pays, and it should be included in the wedding budget. If you're leaving it up to them, then more than likely they'll just do their own hair and makeup, but if they do choose to go to a pro, then they pay for it.

I am in the process of scheduled the hair and make up for my bridesmaids and i and i just thought about who actually pays for their hair and make up? Do they pay for it or is it customary that I do?
