    I need to vent.  There has been another theft in my office, thats twice since I started working there 3 years ago to the same person. TWICE!  WTF?

    What I dont understand is why would someone steal from a coworker?  And to top it all off the tension in the office is palpable.  I'm sorry that it happened but cant help but be annoyed and worried, this is the main reason I never carry cash, hell I'm lucky if I ever carry a purse.

    What's your take on this?  I think it's scummy as hell.

    Definately scummy.We've had the same problem in my office from lunches to cash to corporate credit cards being stolen out of purses and desk drawers. We've also had some less than classy stuff happen in the bathrooms. I never understood it--it's a big office with a lot of people, but most are in their 30s or older.

    @nqz100:

    I just dont get it.  It didnt happen to me but I feel like now everyone is under the microscope. Other than a manilla folder and a couple of post[its here and there I dont steal from my office, let alone my office mates!

    It's just not cool.

    @cruzan1978: It's not. I can almost, almost, just a fraction understand money, not that it's in anyway ok and way worse than anything else. But the thing that has always grossed me out the most are lunches. How do you eat food when 1, you don't know what's in it, and 2, you don't know whose it is and the conditions of where they made the food.

    Wow. I don't get stealing (unless life or death) but stealing from a coworker seems like taking a piss in your own bed. Is that the saying? or is it taking a dump in your own yard... I'm sure you get my point. :)

    Unfortunately it's so common! An ex coworker of mine got her engraved ipod stolen even though she stashed it in a drawer in the closed off receptionist desk.

    Sorry you are dealing with this!

    @cruzan1978: What has been stolen? Not that it matters, I'm just curious.

    People suck sometimes.

    @Gingersnap:

    A decent amount of money I believe.  I'm not sure how much, only that two of the ladies that I work with both had money removed from their purses.  I'm not aware of when exactly as I was dealing with a couple of registrations and phone calls in my area, they are in the next office over.  I was made aware of it the next day, much to my surprise.  Clear conscience on my end but I'm still skeeved and paranoid at who it could have been.

    It just plain sucks.  And the bitch of it is it's the 2nd time to the same person!

    Right?  I cant see stealing in general, I'm too paranoid that and I've been stolen from, I know what it feels like.  Wicked icky feeling, its a serious violation.  Bt to steal from someone you work closely with?  It is absolutely shitting were you eat.  Why risk losing a job for some quick cash?  I'm sure there will be a full on investigation, at least I hope so.

    This has happened at several places I've worked at.  Once a digital camera was stolen from me.  Luckily it was an early version and a piece of garbage.  not really sure why someone would want it...

    I CAN NOT STAND A LIAR AND A THEIF... I am the kind of person I would give you the last dollar I had if I thought you really needed it. So it makes me so upset when ppl steal from me

    I had a big problem with this at beauty school(people would actually break into locked stations and steal when you werent there)and one of my jobs  was so bad and it was not just My Cowokers  but CLIENTS stealing everything from my Tools ( I am a hairdresser) So i have had everything from my combs and brushes , color ,  blow dryers & flat irons  to my tip money cell phone... sunglasses etc...someone even stolen my damn Clothes like jackets scarf etc i hung up in the breakroom!

    What is sooo sad about all of this is 2 things.... They somehow could manage to do this when you walked away from your station. I Never left my stuff overnight at my last job i carried everything with me to and from work EVERY SINGLE DAY! I can not tell you how many times I would go on break or go to the bathroom or just step out for a couple of minutes and come back to my stuff being gone... and of course NO SINGLE PERSON HAD A CLUE WHERE it went! Seriously it does not just walk off on its own!

    I started marking my stuff (like i was in friggen kindergarten) but people would still steal stuff usually it was the same 2 people and if I saw them with it and confronted them about it they would always say the same thing... oh I found it laying in the back and didnt know it belonged to anyone. I took it to our management but of course since no one "saw" them do it ... nothing was ever done.. infact they still work there... and then they wonder why their drawer never comes up right or anything at the end of the night or why they are always having to replace to much stuff because it was "broken" and got "thrown away"

    My new job now has video cameras... at first i didnt think i would like that but it does really help put a stop to stealing and snooping... But honestly i still do not bring a purse in or put anything of value in my locker (bc they dont have locks & the cameras dont monitor back there

    It also cleared up a situation that I had with a client who threw a fit  threatened me and threatened to call the law on me while in the shop claiming that I stole her money out of her purse...when she got up to the desk and didnt not have money to pay for her services .I WAS LIVID! My manager called the law herself on the woman for refusing to pay for services and personal threats..... The owners came down the cops came down and we sat there all together and watched the video..... just like I told the woman there was absolutely no oportunity whatsoever for me to have stolen anything from her. I was never alone with her purse the only time she didnt have eyes on her purse was when i turned her back to the mirror to check her neckline. That woman still accused me claiming the tapes were "altered" the cops said perhaps you wanna question your husband or your children at home first next time

    Yeah I thought I would hate it but The longer I work At my current job the more I really think the cameras help cut down on alot of the crap that happens. I don't think there has ever been a hint at anyone stealing anything from anyone there. I mean honestly we are a smaller shop and other than the bathrooms there is only one place in the whole shop that the cameras cant see you and thats in the are where our lockers are) which i wish they had them in there too)

    I think it also cuts down alot on the laziness and the drama of the stylist. As well as the BS drama clients try to pull sometimes. I honestly also think it cuts down on alot of the crazy people too.... because they dont want to be caught on camera...

    Our cameras do not have sound but in addition to being recorded they video footage also does a live feed that can be accessed from our owners personal computers. And him and his wife do from time to time watch the cameras... because they will always be watching before they call to check in to see if its busy or what everyone is doing.

    I think I will site worker productivity too, since according to some people we apparently just lollygag around sometimes.  I thikn if there are cameras and the idea that people are watching then you are more apt not to "misbehave".  In any event, the more I think about it the more I think that we should have video cameras.  I am defnitely going to bring it up.  Thanks for the idea!

    Hopefully even if your company doesnt install cameras maybe someone will catch the people stealing in the act and they will be long ago

    I'm praying thats the case.  I really feel bad that they think they have to steal though.  Its just a sad commentary on society today that you have to steal from your coworkers. I hope the bugger gets caught in the act.

    In my last office we had Enrico the Klepto. He was an honest kleptomaniac, and he just couldn't help it. If something was missing from my desk, I'd just go over and say "Enrico, where's my stapler/lunchbag/inhaler etc...) and he'd hand it right over. It was just his thing to walk off with stuff. He wouldn't even use it. He had a stockpile of stuff in his desk drawer. Everyone knew if something was missing, that Enrico probably had it, and they would just needed to go to his desk and get it. I think it was the sign of our affection for him that he never got turned in once for doing this.

    That being said, I've also worked in offices that where real theft took place, and that sucked. I kept anything valuable locked in my desk drawer and attached the key to my badge so I wouldn't loose it.

    @cruzan1978: The thing that bothers me about what you just said is I dont think it is necessarily the economy... You know if someone was stealing something they needed.... even gas " my old neighboorhood had this happen a couple times... ppl would use your gas out of your gas cans if they were left in sight... Now that while annoying I can turn my head bc what if none of us was home and they ran out of gas ? OR if someone was stealing food or medicine or something..

     But most of the time though people steal stuff because they want it not because they need it. We have a friend that does loss prevention at walmart.... He says it amazes him sometimes the stupid stuff people steal... expecially the people who buy hundreds of doallars worth of stuff and will steal $5-$10 dollars worth along with it. They arressted a couple the other day .. came to walmart bought a 1,200 worth of electronics (big screen tv surround sound and blue ray player) and got busted for trying to steal a $20 blue ray movie
