Ok, probably a silly question, but I’m new to wedding stuff. Who generally supplies the silverware, plates, and all that? Is that usually included in the cost of the catering, or do you need to purchase/rent that separately?

You’d have to ask your caterer about that. Ours supplies it, but I know a lot of places don’t. Sometimes the venue does, but that’s generally if you get your food through them.

Usually the caterer will supply those for an additional cost. Sometimes the linen company will too. We are using the venues linens, so we will get ours from the caterer.

The venue we picked includes all china rental and linens in the price of the room rental. We looked at one place that charged for every piece of china you put on the table, it ended up adding almost $6 dollars per setting for just the china. Their food was a little cheaper then others we had seen but after adding on the china it was about the same. Water glasses were $1, plates $.75, etc…they said silverware was their gift to us…haha. I asked what the food came on if we didn’t rent the china and they said heavy duty disposables! No thank you, I would not like my wedding steak/chicken dishes served on plastic.

I would ask your caterer or venue. Our venue (who was also our caterer) is really small, so they didn’t have enough of anything (plates, cups, chairs, tables, etc) and we had to rent them ourselves. It was really easy though, they suggested a place for us to go, we looked at what we wanted, and the venue talked to the rental place about numbers for us and made sure we had everything we needed.

Remember to ask every vendor to itemize specifically what is covered in their quote.
This way there won’t be any rude surprises.
You will also be able to compare quotes more accurately.

Our caterer provided ours. They have a rental company they typically work with to supply all those things. Everything I asked them for, they were able to provide, right down to the beverage dispensers. The only thing we got from an outside rental company was our tent, which we split with the other couples getting married at our venue on our weekend.

Our caterer is supplying plates and silverware, but the venue is supplying napkins and tablecloths. I think it all depends on your vendors/contracts. It seems most caterers are able to provide the dishes or have a company they work closely with that does so.

My venue is supplying them, and my caterer is under contract to wash them. Linens are not included with either rental.
