::raises hand:: Pick me, pick me! Man, I wish it was possible to join you over the internet. My husband works until midnight tonight, and a girl's wine tasting evening sounds amazing.
We had one red and one white bottle on each table (long tables - they sat about 20 people each) and we had plenty of wine. In fact, the groomsmen took all the bottles that were unfinished and danced around drinking from the bottles - they got more drunk than I've ever seen them, and they normally drink imperial stouts and barley wines. That being said, we had a lot of guests who don't drink at all, so you will probably need more than we did.
Edit: Also, wines can be successfully refridgerated and saved for later. Just make sure you get the cork on really well and let it sit out for a few hours (the reds, anyway) before drinking next time.
Wellll... I live in New York, so I could help by actually tasting the wines. Just saying :D It's hard work, but someone has to do it! Hehe
What wines are you tasting? Perhaps a bee or two can give some personal input.
I would gladly come taste wine with you but being as I live in wine country (and thus already surrounded by wine) that wouldn't be financially responsible. LOL!
Oh, this seems super helpful: Drink calculator (i.e. best thing ever!) http://www.evite.com/pages/party/drink-calculator.jsp
@melodicsighs1: I have two glasses of red sitting next to me right now to decide between them (as well as some crackers and garlic cheese spread... yummy!)
@sarahbabs: Oh I'd SO call on you if I was in NYC. Sadly I'm up at FMIL's in Maine. My cat is with me, but I don't think he'd be much wine tasting help.
I'm just nervous about picking because FFIL is paying for the rehearsal dinner (the wines I'm currently tasting) and he's a fairly experienced wine drinker. I don't want to pick something that is bad just because I'm a "novice" wine drinker.
@KatNYC2011: oh wow, I wish I had that problem! lol! sounds like fun! :-)
@Treejewel19: Right now I'm tasting the following two:
Chateau de Riviere Bordeaux 2004
Josh Cellars Cabernet Savingnon 2009
I'm leaning towards to Bordeaux. It's dryer and more drinkable. The Josh Cellars is good but very fruity and I'm sure might put some people off.
@KatNYC2011: Whine. I want two glasses of red wine next to me! I might have to find someone willing to come over and have a wine night with me now.
@sarahbabs: Oh wow... that's pretty cool! Thanks.
I'm erring on the side of overbuying since we are supplying and we can take home any leftovers. The last thing I want is to run out of something.
@melodicsighs1: See that's the problem. There's no one here with me, so I feel a bit like an alcoholic.
All in the name of a perfect wedding day right??
@KatNYC2011: LOL, darnit! But if you are worred about pleasing FFIL with your choices, I'd say taste them all, rank your favorites, and then, after you know what tastes good for regular people, look at the Wine Spectator rating, or whatever score is available, online. See if any of your favorites have a good rating, and allow it to be the tiebreaker.
@sarahbabs: FFIL already said he was "leaning towards the Bordeaux" and going on taste I like that one better. I will check wine spectator too, that's a good idea! Thanks.
@KatNYC2011: Yes, but you have an excuse. I think if I headed home at 4pm and opened a bottle of wine all for myself, people might think I have a problem. ;)
@melodicsighs1: Haha maybe. I think the people in trader joe's thought I did. I bought 4 bottles of wine and a bag of cat food!
so jealous. Although I had a cremant, a sauvignon blanc, and a sauternes this afternoon at lunch. YUM!
@heather25: Wow... your lunch sounds fantastic! Where'd you go to get all that yummy wine?
Ca va. Todd English's place on 44th. It is actually reasonable restaurant to get a fancy lunch. They have perpetual restaurant week
@heather25: Ooo.. never been there. Would it be an ok place to go to for lunch alone?
I have no one to go to lunch with but would love to try it before I move to the UK.
@KatNYC2011: I think so...it's got a lovely bar if you don't feel like getting a table. But I saw Harrison Ford eating there (alone) last month, so you would be in good company. And forgive me for not knowing/prying into your back story...why are you moving! FI from? And how fun. I lived in London for the Summer of 2006. Good times!
@heather25: FI got a fantastic job opportunity and has been working in London since March. We are moving there full time (well for at least 2 years) after the wedding.
I ended up quitting my job in NYC since they won't transfer me to the UK, so I've been living in Maine (where the wedding is) with my FMIL until we move.
We still have our place in NYC, but most of our furniture is on a container ship headed to the UK. So... long story short I only have a few opportunities left to enjoy all the fabulous places in NYC. So if Harrison Ford can eat there solo then I'm definitely in good company.
Any good recommendations for London places to eat, go out, etc?
@KatNYC2011: Ugh, its been so long that I don't remember the restos. There is a great fancy Indian place in Kensington if that helps. I went on a bunch of awesome lunches around St. Pauls. There is also a huge market (someone help me out please) that has great food samples and meals. YUM!
@heather25: Borough Market? I LOVE that place!
There are so many yummy Indian places all over London.
@heather25: FI took me there the first time I visited. I just cannot wait until he and I are on the same continent again!
It's hard to go from sharing an apartment for 3 years to all of a sudden having an ocean separating us.
@KatNYC2011: Do you get to go often? Ugh, flights to Heathrow aren't what they used to be. Winter for 600 bucks. You used to be able to go there in the dead of winter for 150-200. :(
@heather25: I've been over twice since March. And he tries to come back about once a month aside from those two times. The flights really not what they used to be price wise.
@KatNYC2011: Well at least you guys have gotten back and forth. But the countdown is on and soon you will be together!
@heather25: FI comes home in 1 week and then the next time he leaves for London I go with him! And we'll be married!
ETA: Ok... all this wine might be making me a little silly.
@KatNYC2011: AHHH! That's right. Just looked at your date. That's exciting. PS Please do recaps and don't leave us!
@heather25: I will do recaps. Don't worry. I will have a fair bit of time once I move to London since I won't have a job yet and will be done with all the wedding planning stuff.
So I'm sure I'll have time to post now and then between job searching and exploring my new city/learning how to cook.
hey melodicsigh as a fellow san diego dealing with our massive blackout the 1st thing i did when i got home was open wine. ill have a girls wine night with you1 btw typing on my phone which doesnt like puncuation buttons on this site.
and i meant san diegan. editing on smart phones sucks gah
so did you decide? ps i dont think its weird to have two glasses of wine in front of you ;)
@CookieBee: I'm going with the Bordeaux. It is dryer and more palatable (I'm totally making it up now).
I've also had a glass of chardonnay (it'll do, I'm not a big fan of chardonnay but it's drinkable) and on my second glass of cava (SUPER yummy).
Also onto my 4th episode of Drop Dead Diva... Having a good night.
So, an update: I ended up drinking wine with my landlady/neighbor tonight because the power was out. Win. :)
@KatNYC2011: How did it go? Being the fatty that I am, I went to two different bars and had a total of 4 glasses of wine. Plus a lil cheese and steak tartare. This was after dinner. And I am supposed to be on WeightWatchers. Le sigh.
I might add that you and are the same person. Don't call me a snob but I like only the most expensive of chardonnays. I think 98% of them are passable to bad. Sauv blanc and sancerre. That's a different story. For some reason, even the $5 bottles are delish to me.
@heather25: Sounds like we ARE the same person. I ended up having 4 glasses last night too (actually 5, had two of the cava it was so good) and my dinner was gourmet garlic cheese spread and homemade mini biscuits FMIL made. SOOOO yummy.
I agree with the sav blac and sancerre, I can drink any kind, but chardonnay it has to be REALLY good for me to like it.
@MASPA: It was a super yummy one. It's from Trader Joe's and only $6.99 a bottle. Quite the steal!

Ok... so I know you can't really do that through the internet, but I have 2 reds, a white, AND a cava to taste before ordering our wedding wine.
Initially doesn't sound so bad. The problem is I have to order tomorrow (Saturday at the latest) and I am the ONLY one here and don't know anyone in the neighborhood to help me drink these bottles. I also don't want to just open them and then let them go to waste.
Guess I may be drinking my dinner tonight!
Also, how many cases of wine did you order for your wedding? We have 93 guests and are trying to figure out how many cases of red, white, and champagne we should order. Thoughts?
