I work for a coffee shop and I have to open the store on Black Friday so I have to be up at one am and be there at two thirty. At this point I'm beginning to wonder if there is even any point in sleeping? I hate working on no sleep, but how do you sleep when you have to be up at one am?
Where do you work? What time do you have to be at work and will you be sleeping?
I dont have to work this year but the last year I worked retail I worked the day after Christmas and had to be there at 3...I basically just went to bed super early...maybe eight or so. I tried to stay up late christmas eve so I'd be tired.
I don't anymore, but I used to work at McDonald's and opened the store, so once a month I had to come in to count inventory at 3am, which meant getting up at 2am. I had the same thought as you the first time I had to do it and decided just to stay up until it was time to go into work. Worst decision I ever made. By 8am I was completely miserable, and still had 6 hours left of my shift. I would definitely suggest getting some sleep, even if it isn't much!!
I used to work retail Black Friday when I was in college. Of course this was back when you "only" had to be there at 5am.
Maybe try going to bed at 9ish and sleeping til 1?
@MissBoPeep: Yeah our store generally opens at 4:30 am so I'm used to being up at 3AM for those days, but there's just something about 1AM that is hard to work with. Maybe at least a few hours will help.
I work at...hmm not sure I wanna actually type it out just cuz the company is strict about what we say online and stuff. But it's the big blue electronics store that always has tons of people on Black Friday. I work 5AM - 5PM, so I'll be going to bed pretty early on Thanksgiving so that I can get a decent amount of sleep. We already have tents with people camping outside the store! But for sleep, don't get a lot tonight that way you'll be tired and able to fall asleep early tomorrow. I'm just glad I'm not one of the people who has to be there at midnight, then I wouldn't be sleeping!
For me, a few hours makes me more tired than not sleeping at all. Is there any way you can get into bed earlier? I take melatonin on days when I need to get up early and can't fall asleep.
I only worked retail one year and I wasn't opening so I wasn't there first thing.
@MissAsB: I can try to head to bed by say ten. that would at least give me three hours. I'll be super groggy (sometimes sleeping is worse than not when it comes to being groggy for me) but I won't feel sick from not sleeping
I used to work Black Friday, and I'd open our store at 4:00, meaning I had to be at work by 3:00, and I had to be up by 2:00. I'd try to get a few hours of sleep in, and then I would just crash when I got home from work that day. Luckily, I was usually on a super adrenaline high from being so busy, and I didn't notice I was tired until the drive home. :)
Panera Bread - Ill be at work at 3 am to prep. Here is the stupid part... IM GOING SHOPPING BEFORE HAND!!! oh yes!! working cant stop MY black friday shopping, esp when places open up at midnight. OH yes, im sure ill be a joy!!!
Last year, I worked at 7 AM at my 1st job at a health clinic and followed my second job as a bartender until 2 am. AND i also went to black friday shopping before hand.
Sometimes i dont know who i am!! lol
I don't work in retail, but I feel sorry for all of the those that do have to get up tomorrow. The hours you have to work are ridiculous. I wish all of you luck tomorrow dealing with the insane shoppers.
i dont anymore but I worked retail for like 3 years. It was crazy. However, I usually ended up with the closing shift on black friday. I feel for you though :( I would either sleep in big time the day before or get up early and then go to bed super early, like 8pm.
@MeganTacky2247: ahaha! thats awesome. i could never do that
@SleepingWithNuns: at least you will have plenty of coffee accessible! :D
I work retail, a silver jewelry shop in the mall. This will be my thirteenth black Friday in a row :) I am a regional manager so to set an example I was work a 12 hr day, 7-7 usually. We open at 4 but it doesn't get busy for us until later...
I used to work at Border's part-time, so I worked two Black Fridays. Since we didn't have many door buster type sales, it wasn't too bad.
Those of you at places like Kohl's, Best Buy, Walmart, etc.... I sympathize with you. I hope your store isn't too insane.. especially stores that are opening earlier this year than ever.
Maybe someday the country will wake up and realize the holidays shouldn't revolve around gifts. I know my husband and I feel that way.
I work at Best Buy. We're opening at midnight this year, so I have to be there at 11pm on Thankgiving. I work 11pm-7am, then go back at 3pm to close the store up. Ugh. I'm trying not to think about it.
I work at JCPenney. I have to work 3:45am to 2pm on Black Friday. I would have to be up around 3am to get ready to go. I usually don't fall asleep until 1am or 2am on a normal night (stupid insomnia) and am also debating on whether I should just stay up. I have been told to at least to get the 1 or 2 hours of sleep though.
@careanne You go woman!!!! yes, dont think about it!! GO GO GO GO!!! :D
After 6 years of working retail on Black Friday, usually starting at around 6 am, I will officially be sleeping in this year! I feel your pain if you'll be up early and serving/trying to not get trampled by the crowds, though.
I worked at Ann Taylor last year, our store opened at 10pm Thankgiving night. I worked 10:30-3:30am which really wasn't so bad. It was busy enough that I didn't have time to think about being tired.
This will be my first ever retail job thats at major department store. I'm only scheduled on evenings anyway, so I'm on from 5:30 pm until 10pm. Which works perfect for me. I still get my day free.
I work a half day: 8-2pm at my "day job" (an OB/GYN clinic) and then head to L.L. Bean 3-11pm...
it's going to be a looong day!
@BabyBoecksMom: I agree! this country is out of control with it's shopping mania. seriously, we need employees to open a store at 3am? man, that's awful. seriously, if all stores opened/closed at normal hours, I'm sure they'll still turn a good profit that day.
best of luck to all of y'all who have to work on black friday, and to those who have to work ON holidays too. happy thanksgiving!
I own a candle shop that will do a hefty Black Friday (and Small Business Saturday, natch) business, but we don't do any doorbuster/special sales. I'm only opening the shop one hour early, so 10am. But I'm going to get my butt kicked from 10am till 10pm. All hail the retail workers!!!
worse! I work at a bank on black friday which means I'm on the other end of the line when the customer's card won't work because they are just trying to od their account by 2 or 300 dollars for a couple hours and why can't i make it go through don't i understand that if they put anything down to go make a deposit they'll NEVER get it at this price again.
I feel for you retail persons!
The hours get earlier and earlier every year, it's only a few years away until all the retail places are open on thanksgiving. Eventually it will probably turn to black Wednesday!
I do work in a retail setting but we are open our normal hours for Black Friday. We used to open early but most people come here later in the day.
I work at Bath and Body Works and our store is the only one opening at midnight (along with the mall)! I don't have to be there until 6AM but I'm sure it'll be crazyyyyY!
@careanne: I'm super lucky I didn't get stuck with the split shift! Curious of what store you work at...I've worked at three different Best Buys in Michigan.
I just took a part time job a few weeks ago at a men's big and tall store. Our big sale started today-we were pretty swamped. We are opening 3 hours early on black friday. As part of my salary is commission, I hope we get over run. I need to rake in the bucks for the wedding!
DH used to work at Kohl's while we were dating. Luckily, this was before they started the opening at midnight insanity. However, his last Black Friday in retail happened to fall on his birthday...it wasn't a happy one!
I don't work there anymore, but when I was 17 I worked at Old Navy and (stupidly) volunteered to work Black Friday. I had to be there at 11PM and the store opened at midnight. Everyone told me I should sleep at least a little before going in, but I just couldn't, so I worked like 9 hours on no sleep. By the time 8AM rolled around I was like a zombie, as was most of the overnight crew. If I ever work retail again, I will NOT work Black Friday overnight if I can help it.
@mycupoftea: Which mall is opening at midnight!? I'm debating going black Friday shopping for the first time ever this year since my usual be time is way part midnight. It won't involve waking up early.
I'm working black Friday but I have a closing shift. I also work at a big box pet store so things shouldn't get crazy.
I work in retail, but, thankfully, I don't have to be there this time. My mom, however, gets to start work at 11:30pm tomorrow night and work until 9am because they will open at midnight.
I guess I should be grateful that my store doesn't have holiday hours either way, as of right now, fingers crossed.
@mycupoftea: So I work right down the street from you! I don't work at the pet store *right* next to you, but the one with a different name a little bit down the Turnpike. Send your non grouchy customers down to us! haha Good luck tomorrow! I haven't noticed any super grouchies in Richmond yet so hopefully everything is smooth for everyone tomorrow!
I'm Canadian and worked retail at a major electronics store for 4 years. We have it so much worse because our version of Black Friday is Boxing Day, meaning every year you have to cut Christmas festivities short so you can sleep because you have to get up at 4AM to go work the whole entire day. So if you're feeling down about Black Friday just think about your poor Canadian counterparts and rejoice!
There are no words to describe how happy I am to not be working retail anymore this Christmas...
@futurewiddy: No way!! That's too funny that you're so close :) We have a few grouches (apparently lotinon and such is srs buisness). I will send them your way! Good luck to you too :D
