souza_2005:  So sorry this happened! Its happened to me twice actually and I was devastated both times.

I was in the first job for 3 and a half years when I got let go for no real reason. Was told they were taking the position “in a new direction”. I figure its because the Executive Directior blew the budget and couldn’t afford my salary anymore (she was fired 6 months later for her incompetence). I dealt with it by throwing myself into volunteer work to fill the time until I found another position. Took a few short term gigs as well. Then I got my dream job 6 months later.

And the dream job was the second time it happened. With government and a year after I started they did major cuts in the public service. Sadly because I was the last one hired in my unit I was the one to get cut. Devastated again. This time I was able to use my seniority to bump into another position (although less money, shift work and doing something I had no experience doing). I rolled with it and learned lots in that position. Met some awesome people. Was lucky enough to get my dream job back 9 months later when someone left.

My advice is to think about your next move and not jump into something too quickly out of fear. My cousin had a senior health care position and got caught in budget cuts a few years ago. She decided to start consulting and works less than she did before but for the same money. There are options out there. Also take care of yourself.

Depending on on the laws where you live and on how long you’ve been working there you may be entitled to a severance package. Id do some research if there was no mention of that from HR.

My job got cut a few years back. I used the severance package to fund an extra year of school I wanted to do and fast forward two years later I just accepted my dream job. Have a look at your options and don’t jump into anythjbg too quickly. Good luck!

Um first you need to get your dismissal in writing with the reason why. You will need this to get unemployment if you decide to go this route and if severence pay is due to you.  If you do not have a paper trail then you could be fired if you do not show up for a week as a “no call no show” (not showing thinking you were let go) AND unemployment can decline you. I have been screwed by a previous employer for not having things in writing before.  I would show up to work and tell them you expect to be paid until a letter from HR can be given to you.

fall2014:  totally agree with you. OP should continue coming into work until she gets somethibg in writing.

this process seems so frustrating! DONT accept to quit if they want you to. If you quit, you can’t get unemployment insurance or severance pay. This all sounds so shady.

Sorry this happened to you 🙁  I too, was laid off on March 31st with no warning.  Immediately escorted out of the office like a criminal.  Wasn’t allowed to collect my things, and had to go back after hours with my husband.  I worked there for 6.5 years, and had NO inkling it was coming.  They say it was due to restructuring, but I know better.  A woman who just became manager does NOT like me, and I never liked her.  I didn’t kiss her ass like everyone else did, and she hated that.  Oh well!

I cried for the entire day, and then the next day I started appling for new jobs and enrolled in classes.  I also got a good compensation, so I went for lots of lunches with friends and almost took a holiday, but between a small reno I did at home, plus interviews, I just didn’t find the time.  I’m on my way to geting my real estate license and working at a job that makes more money now!

Best of luck to you!!! Do you have any ideas of what you will do?

It’s so stressful – I got laid off after 3 years at a job because they decided to “outsource my position.” (Scare quotes because I noticed on Facebook that they are searching for a candidate for what used to be my job). I got hired by another company quickly, and a few months later, ended up in my dream job!

Definitely make sure you have everything in order and in writing – use the severance as a cushion to search for a job you really want.
