I thought about this too. The prices were so much better. I think a lot of it has to do with whether or not you have “THE dress” and you’ve tried it on. I would worry that if you order it, and the fabrics or feel isn’t identical, that maybe then you would be disappointed. I also think it would be important to have your measurements done by a professional since maybe then you can save tons on alterations if you were to make a mistake. 🙂

I was reading this book “Bridal Bargains” and they suggested a chinese seller in the book who a lot of people have ordered from. I even thought about that because the prices are so tempting ($150-$250 on average for a custom order!). Reviews say that people have been happy with the dress quality and he has tons of ratings. Here is the link in case you are interested:  http://myworld.ebay.com/jeffliu8000/

In the end, I don’t think I want to order mine because I really want to be able to try it on and know exactly what I am getting. I think I either need to buy used using a style number or just pay retail.

Here are a few tips for ordering online

  • Try on dresses in person to find your size and the shape that works best on your body
  • Don’t order a dress that is the same picture on the original designers page without asking for a photo of that dress THEY made. If they dont give you one dont buy it!
  • Have someone else take your measurements if you do custom sizing. I did standard sizing and just had to have the skirt hemmed and taken in (im 5’1)
  • Dont expect your dress to look different then it does in the photo unless its a original designers photo. There was a girl on LITB who didnt like her dress because she thought the flowers were going to look different (they look exactly the same as the photo)
  • Don’t have unrealiztic expectations you are getting a dress for $100-300 not $2k+

I am going to be measured here pretty soon to purchase a 160.00 dress from ebay, it is beautiful, and I ahve never seen anythign like it before, I love it!!! I have searched everywhere and can not find anything else like it, im gonna get it.  Only problem is I dont know if I want it in white or Ivory.  The Ebay seller has top ratings, and so that makes me feel a bit better.  I also read their feed back which is really good.  I say do it!

I recently got my wedding dress in the mail from Milly Bridal.  I decided to go the china route because I had a vision in my mind of what I want but it was a combination of several different dresses.  I did a sketch of how I wanted the elements combined and send pictures of the different dresses I wanted pieces from and with shipping it was $340. I’m not going to lie it doesn’t look like a $5k or even really a $1k dress but it is still beautiful and exactly what I wanted.  I shopped around for quite some time and decided to go through them because I could get fabric samples and they do a quick sew dress of your style before they make the real one so you can make sure all the details are right.  They emailed me pic’s every step of the way which was great.  Only thing with them is they take off time around the Chinese new year so around that time it can take awhile to get a dress. If anyone is interested I could take pic’s of my dress to show the quality of the work and what not.

I ended up with 2 dresses,  one of them from Trade Tang in China.  It turns out I will be wearing this dress to my wedding. It was exactly as it was pictured and good quality, well sewn.  you can find pics here:
