Hubby's birthday is Jan 1 and I want to go to Phoneix. He has family there that we have been wanting to go visit. I have about 6 months to plan this. This'll be our first time bringing in the new year in a diff city/state. Has anyone been? How is the weather in Jan? What things should we do while there? I have not been able to contact our cousin yet, so I am not sure if we can stay there or what. So, what are some nice hotels that won't break the bank? Thrown anything that you think could be useful. Thanks everyone!

I've only been to the phoenix airport, so I'm no help, but maybe post this to the local boards to see if you get some responses?

I lived in the suburbs of Phx for a long time and my parents still live there. What part of Phx does your cousin live? That will make a big difference in activities because things can end up being pretty far away.

The weather in January is absolutely fabulous and winter is a great time to visit central AZ. We spend Christmas on the back patio in tank tops and shorts! Phx also hosts the Fiesta Bowl (college football) and in the past they had a big block party in Tempe for New Year's Eve. The moved the football game to a different stadium, but I think they still have the big party (I haven't been in years).

OH OH... I've been there once!.. just so happens. lol

I stayed at the Clarendon and really enjoyed it! I think they're reasonably priced as well (not sure though b/c I didn't make the reservations)

They rooms are a lot of fun and I LOVE their pool area... so gorgeous! They have an area on the roof to sit and look off at the mountains & a resturant/lounge downstairs that has some pretty good sushi =)

@mowi322: Thanks! The weather sounds awesome. I didn't expect it to be too cold, but that is fab! She lives in Peoria. Are you familiar with that?

@amnystik: Thanks so much for the info!

And because I'm weird like that here's the directions from the hotel to Peoria... looks like it's only about 20 minutes away...

Also, if I remember correctly the hotel isn't far/hard to get to from the airport =)

For some reason, I just knew it would be Peoria! That area is a little further away than the area I'm familiar with. I lived in Mesa/downtown Tempe/Scottsdale/Chandler area. In general, we I think of visiting the Phx area I think of water parks, shopping, and the occasional museum (I like the Botanical Gardens and they may still be doing ZooLights at the Zoo when you go). I'm sure your cousin will know of good local places to visit.

@amnystik: You're sooooooooooo on it. Thanks so much!

@mowi322: She has mentioned going to Tempe before. How far is that from Peoria? I am sure that she will show us around..I just wanted some other ideas, in case there was something that we HAD to do :)

I live here.  Peoria is on the west side of "town."  Whether in January is very nice - 50's - 60's during the day, possibly rainy (if we are having a rainy winter) but usually sunny, and 30's- 40's at night. (it actually got below freezing this year at night, which is not usual for the Phoenix area).  It's not really jacket weather (depending on where you are from), but I would layer.  It's also very DRY, so you sould drink a bit more water.

I miss January weather, last weekend it was 119.  Monsoon season is here and it's hot and humid. UGH.

Over in that area is Dolce Salon and Spa and they are WONDERFUL.  They have lots of facebook deals and you can buy what they call "hunies" which are basically gift cards towards spa services.  Like you get $80 worth of spa services for $40 and you can buy as many as you'd like.  There are also lots of restaurants and shopping in that area (bell and 83rd ave), like cheesecake factory, buca di peppo, in and out burger (fun fast food place to stop if you are from out of town).

Tempe is about an hour from Peoria, but the freeways are pretty good. Tempe is where ASU is and there are lots of water parks, and outlet mall, shopping, etc to do there.  There is also an outlet mall about 30 mins north of peoria (up I-17 in Anthem) and they will have a COACH outlet by October.

@PrncssDva: Sure! There are lots of hotels in that Bell/83rd ave area too.  If you are having a hard time finding things in "Peoria," try searching in Glendale.  Peoria is kind of a tiny town.  Also near there is the Glendale Arena, so you might be able to catch a hockey game or something too.
