A great place is Cake Love - http://www.cakelove.com/ - they have other locations other than DC as well (I know Silver Spring and I believe one in Baltimore). The cakes are amazing (coming from someone that doesn't like sweets)! The only downside is that they don't decorate the cake, it just comes with plain frosting. I only gotten it for birthday's and such. I hope this helps!
My sister went weth Enticing Icing by Katie - the cake was delicious and very cheap!

If cost is the biggest thing on your mind, just go to Safeway or Giant. You're not feeding a lot of people, so they can do a cake to feed 50 on site and it probably won't cost nearly as much as a real "wedding" place. They generally won't do the internal architecture for a really big cake there, but 50 is probably really manageable.
I second Enticing Icing by Katie.... we booked her for our November wedding; cheap, delicious, and Katie is a doll to work with.
PuffsandPastries.com , great store in hampden. If you're looking for more traditional, check out Touchet touchet in Columbia, MD :)
DO NOT USE Katie Edgar with EnticingIcingByKatie.com from your reccomended vendors. She is very unprofessional. She has avoided all of our calls, emails, and texts for a month. She has screwed my husband and I over on a wedding cake we paid in full in July for our Vow Renewal Jan 23rd, giving no refund or contact. So here I am 1 week out, desperately seeking someone who can fill the void.

Might be worth calling to see what Graul's Markets could do for you-- I ordered baby shower cupcakes from them, and they were delicious.
Also, check out the Baltimore Cupcake Company-- am not sure on pricing, but their cupcakes are delicious. I used to work down the street from their Baltimore location, and we used to go for "cupcake happy hour" where they sold the day's remaining cupcakes from 5-6pm. Yummm. http://www.baltimorecupcakecompany.com/contact.cfm
Oops, just realized this question was from 8 months ago!
Most grocery stores will offer a reasonably priced cake. I would consider Wegmans or Santoni's Marketplace in Glyndon, MD. They both make very tasty bake goods.
Our cake was fabulous! We did tests with several different people and there are two that I would highly recommend. The first was Mary Elliott and she is located in Timonium. Her phone number is 410-561-5453.
The second one I recommend is Artistic Cake Creations, the email address for that one is Margie@artisticcakecreations.com. She delivers to MD, PA and VA and I have to say it was the best cake I have ever had in my entire life. It was homemade and it tasted that way. For our cake testing, we tried 6 different cakes and about 30 different fillings. Also, her prices started at $1.25 per person for a basic buttercream (I think fondant was a bit more). We ended up getting two cakes from her, because she was so inexpensive. Our wedding cake was three minature layers in which she did three different flavors (we only had cake for 40) and then the groomscake was another two flavors with different fillings. She had no problem doing all the different flavors and fillings for a small cake. The cake looked gorgeous too!

Where are people getting their wedding cakes in the baltimore-washington dc-annapolis areas? I need a cheap cake for 50 people!
