Why are bridesmaid's dresses so expensive?

I have 4 very different sized bridesmaids from the very petite to very tall and busty.  I want to pick an option that is just the same color in the same fabric and they can get what they like but everything (save david's bridal) seems to be close to $200.  I know david's bridal is cheaper but I think they are still pricey but the quality is far worse.  I hate to ask my bridesmaids to pay over $150 on a dress they may never wear again.

Any alternative out there that are reasonable priced but good quality?

I got my BMs dresses from the Dessy After Six line and they were $135. They were really nice quality (I bought the same dress in a pattern for myself), have tons of color and style options, and were affordable.

EDITED TO ADD: With Dessy, order them from an online vendor instead of a bridal store.  The cheapest a bridal store could sell me the exact same dresses was $185 (and that was with an extra discount for buying all six dresses from the same store at the same time).  We bought them online for $135.

Lightinthebox.com a lot of their stuff is under $100 but the colors are NOT what you think they will be. I ordered burgundy and got red.

i agree that the dresses are pricey... when i had to get a bm dress from db i just called around to see if any were on the racks at a discount....found one that was $50 less in my size but it still ended up being around the same price your looking for....

for my bms, i'm just gonna ask them to pick out a black cocktail dress...we'll probly go shopping together to make sure the blacks aren't too far off from each others...

I totally went non-traditonal and got my bridesmaids dress from Mod Cloth. They have free returns and exchanges so it was easy for all (SIX) of my bridesmaids to try on dresses and get the right size... and they definitely got dresses they would wear again.

www.shopRuche.com also does some great dresses for budget bride. If you feel the need to go a more traditional route you may want to try J.Crew sales/factory outlets.

    Good luck!!

I got mine for the Outlet section of the DB website.  4 dresses for $39 each.  The selection is very limited and all sales are final, but it is very helpful for those like us who don't want to force the BMs to pay an obscene amount of money for a dress for one day.  These were so cheap we just paid for them ourselves.  the BMs are all appreciative.  Good luck!

the jcrew BM dresses go on sale periodically. i'd also look around at non-traditional BM dresses. i'm having all my girls pick out their own dress in black so they can choose how much to spend. i'm just giving them a length and a couple fabrics to choose from.

This depends on where you and your bridesmaids live, but I had a seamstress make the dresses from photographs of other dresses. We provided the fabric and she charged like 30 bucks for each dress (we tipped 15/dress because that price was insane). We asked around a lot to find this woman, but it was worth it.

The dresses weren't crap either -- they were fully lined!

@KaitlinHudson: did you have good luck with them? i found a dress on there i love and want my bms to wear but i am terrified to ask them to order from them given their dresses are made in china and i have heard horror stories about it. Though Lightinthbox has pretty good reviews from what i've read. Im getting Black BM dresses so i dont know if they can really mess the color up.

I used netbride.com and loved them. The dresses were $236 in store and $150 through net bride.

My bridesmaids bought their dresses from Jcrew and they were $130. I would also look at places like Nordstrom, Dilalrds and Macy's for bridesmaids dresses.

Oh and about david's bridal. I paid $160 for a bridesmaid dress from there this summer which really annoyed me. The dress is cheaply made and not worth the price!

Because the word "bridesmaid" is infront of it. It is a title that comes with a price tag. Go look for similar dresses that aren't specifically called Bridesmaid dresses and you will find MUCH cheaper versions of the same thing.

We used perfectbridal.com for the Bill Levkoff dresses and they were $120 as opposed to $180 in the salon. It was free shipping if they all went to one address and $20 extra for each additional dress. I had all but 2 shipped to me and covered the $20 for my SILs who live in Atlanta to get their dresses separately. They were easy to work with, no complaints!

I just look on JCrew and Ann Taylor clearance sales. They are not your typical bridesmaid dress a la DB but they are good nonetheless. I sometimes see silk dresses for less than $70!!

Thanks Ladies!  There are a lot of good ideas in here! I've never thought about the price difference between online and in the bridal store.

i also used netbride.com when i was a bridesmaid. In store price was over $100 and we got them for $80. it was more with shipping, but then we had them to delivered to one of our houses and so by splitting the shipping fees it was a lot cheaper.

When I was looking I found a lot of very pretty options online at stores like Nordstrom  - nordstrom.com - well worth checking out!

I wound up going with Alfred Angelo dresses and they ranged between $110-150 so not terrible (but I agree, a bit much for a one-time-wear...)

Because designers know you will take the path of least resistance and are only a 1 time customer! Every BM dress I've had to buy has been over $200, but I picked out a priscilla of boston dress for my girls that was only $159 (before tax). They will never wear them again, but at least they were flattering and good quality!

I got mine at Nordstrom for less than $100.  And then a couple of them were in certain sizes were on sale and ended up getting them for $60.

My BM dresses are 135 from Davids and i still think thats pricey considering they are a very simply knee-length strapless dress with not bells and whistles. That dress would normally cost 40-60 dollars in a regular store but the only problem is regular stores dont have the right color I want. I agree with pp that they know brides will choose the path of least resistance. because its convenient to order from a bridal store than to attempt to just buy a regular dress for several women and get it all in the same color and right size.

I have a friend that got her bridesmaids dresses at Target for $20. Don't feel limited by "bridal" shops. Pick a dress you like someplace cheaper if that is what works for you. I think the bridal shops are overpriced for what they offer anyways.

@kfricke89: I agree. Anything wedding related jacks the price up.

I went to a Le Chateau outlet store and the girls got their dresses for $30 or $40, shoes were $30. I didn't want super formal BM dresses, so that also helped with the price point.

    I used netbride.com

I ordered Alfed Sung D447.  Quoted anywhere from 179-220 in bridal stores, but $120 each including taxes and shipping to Canada online.

@Snowy414: I ordered mine from here: http://www.bridesmaids.com/as6553.html (looks like they're even slightly less now than when I bought them!).  But I'd say you best bet with Dessy is to google the model number you like and it will pull up all the online stores that sell it.  Then you can compare prices that way.  The site that was cheapest with my BM dresses might not be cheapest with yours! :)
