Anyone else's parents obsessed with King size beds?  It's a big ordeal that our resort doesn't have king size beds in their one bedrooms, and both sets of parents "need" king size beds.  How about sleeping a little closer?

    Ok, rant done...

    Ha!

Well, I'm not a parent, but when the hubs and I travel, we always prefer king sized beds, too! I'm a troubled sleeper, and he's loud at night and moves around a lot. It keeps me up a LOT. So when we travel, we adore the luxury of king-sized beds :)

We also plan on buying one when we get a house. It's like, going to be our first purchase. Living in a city, bedrooms here aren't big enough for a king-sized bed, and we can't wait to get one someday.

I think some people do kind of "need" king sized beds due to their size (if they're overweight) and/or fitful sleepers. Beyond that though, if you're used to always sleeping in one size, it can be really hard to go down a size comfortably.

Nevertheless, for 1 or 2 nights, I think everyone should just suck it up and leave you alone :)

Haha I'm not sure, but I definitely would sing the praises of king sized beds any day of the week. We just got one as an early wedding gift from my in-laws and LOVE it! I have trouble sleeping and we both like to sprawl out, so its much more comfortable for us! We can snuggle and sleep close if we want to, but have plenty of room to spread out if we want. I just hope our next place has a big enough master bedroom to accommodate it...our current townhome has a ridiculously huge room.

Wow- everyone loves their king size beds.  Looks like I am out numbered.  Maybe years of apartment living has skewed my views on furniture size.

I'm also with your parents there... Love the king size bed. My husband is a very light sleeper and I move around quite a bit when I sleep. He had me buy a king size bed back when we were dating, and had one at his place, too.

My only regret about my single days is not buying a King instead of a Queen. Okay fine, I have more regrets about my single days but seriously I do really regret it. I tried to talk my single friend into getting a King and she wouldn't listen, wouldn't listen, "Oh, I don't need one it's so wasteful, blah blah" and now she's in a serious relationship with a very tall man and needs to get a King.

So I'm with your parents, I actually don't consider hotels that don't have a King bed because if I'm PAYing to stay somewhere it had better be nicer than my normal sleeping situation. But if I were attending a wedding at a resort with only Queen beds I would never complain to the bride.

Haha, FI and I sleep on a queen and we are fine with that. Now my parents claim that a king size bed is a key to happy marriage :)

Oh I totally need a king size....I need my space!  Most hotel bed suck anyway so you should at least find one that has enough space so you're some what comfortable.

I'm probably in the minority here too.  We live in the city and only have a full/double bed.  That's all I've ever slept in.  A queen would be a major upgrade.  I wouldn't get upset if a hotel didn't have a king size bed.

Well, I'm in a couple that's obsessed with King Beds...well, Cal King actually.  But my DH is 6'6" so sleeping in anything smaller can be a bit awkward and uncomfortable. lol

As for older parents, if they've been married for a long time, they're probably very used to sleeping habits.  And the idea of shelling out a ton of money at a resort that they won't sleep very good at?  Yeah, I can see their side of things. lol

I looove a king sized bed.

Ours is a queen, but a king would be too big for our townhouse bedroom with the nightstands on each side.

My parents need a king too. My dad can't fit on a queen unless he sleeps diagonally and that doesn't work for my mom to fit in too :-) They would be absolutely MISERABLE and grouchy from poor sleep if they had to sleep on a queen. In fact, they would prefer 2 queens over 1 in that scenario!

They love it so much, that they are getting us a KING for the new house we just bought! They are firm believers in them!

My FI and I don't do non-king either. We're both 6'1" and just don't fit well on a queen. Also, i'm a really light sleeper, and a bigger bed means less motion transfer and less rolling into one another. It's a REALLY big deal to us. I can understand why it's a big deal to your parents. They probably tried a queen bed after moving in together, and figured out that it just doesn't work for them. Are there alternative places for them to stay where there would be a king bed available?

I think my husband would kill me during the night if we didn't have a king. I move all night long and tend to sprawl out, which he can't stand, so we have to have a king size bed. And we would never choose to stay at a hotel that we couldn't book one in.

We inherited the best Cal. King bed ever... pillow top mattress with 3 inch memory foam. It's like sleeping on a cloud! Definitely recommend it!

I tend to think with parents, due to their age, there are more aches and pains, bad backs, leg cramps, etc. and they need more room.  There are also probably more middle of the night trips to the bathroom that might disturb the other parent.  As you get older, a good night's sleep is both more important and harder to get.

Personally, I'm fine with a full-size bed. But then my FI and I like sleeping close.  We've had king beds when we've stayed at hotels and felt kind of lost in them.

okay my response does not relate to hotels specifically:  We currently own a queen size bed... my fiance is 6'-6" tall.. he doesn't fit in it well, so he takes up my half of the bed... when we get a new bed, it will be a king... :)

We have a queen and love it. He's 6' or 6'1", but is comfy because he gets a little more of the space since I'm 5'. Living in a 13x12 room, you really don't get the luxury of a king whether you want one or not.

My parents sleep separately, and the FILs have a king, but rarely sleep on it together so I think they'd prefer a king in a hotel room, but have slept on queens on vacation just fine.

I guess I should have explained that our resort is fly fishing resort with a rustic lodge with log cabins and is more of a campout vibe than a luxury vacation.  My parents are not tall people, while my fiance is 6'3 and fine with our full size bed.  When we visit his family at christmas we share a single and are fine with that.  One of the first things he said he loved about me is how well we sleep (I mean actually sleep) together so I guess he wasn't kidding...  We just roll over at the same time and if my arm falls off the bed I tell him to move over.  I guess more room would be a nice luxury now that I think about it...

Yes, if my parents choose, there is another hotel with king size beds they can stay at- they just want to stay the place where the wedding is being held...

The FI and I are still in college, so we've only slept on twin size beds. Even full or queens have so much room compared to twins.

When traveling, I try to get two doubles now.  We sleep better on trips that way, since one of us is always waking up in the middle of the night due to time differences or changes in humidity (makes breathing difficult), etc.  Took a bubble bath at 3am in Dublin so as not to disturb hubby, who was giving a speech the next day.

At home we have a King- came in handy during scary times when the kids visited us in the wee hours or wanted a good toddler jump.  H is also six feet tall:-)

We have a king size bed and it's hard to go "down" to anything else now.  It can seem big at first and it is nice to snuggle and all of that but it's also soooo nice to have our own S P A C E when it's time to actually fall asleep.  Also, my FI tends to get out of bed during the night sometimes and in a bigger bed he rarely wakes me up.  A king size bed is one of our 3 keys to a happy marriage (the other two are a TiVo and separate bathrooms!)

Before we moved FI and I had a full bed because that was what I had in my place before he moved in and was pretty much what fit in the old apartment and I would complain every single night. I'm a sprawler. I don't do snuggling. Can't sleep without some space. The King size upgrade was a quality of life issue.

@clane616 LOL We have the seperate bathrooms too! It's wonderful! He has the one in our master bedroom and I use the one 10 feet away by the guest room (we live in a townhouse). I don't see how we could combine all of our stuff into one bathroom. He actually will look at my bathroom, shake his head and simply say, "Oh my gosh", laugh, and walk away. He thinks I have too much "stuff"! :)

We have a king and couldn't ever downgrade. We both roll a lot and do not sleep close to each other (I'm a super light sleeper). We love our king. It has about 3-4 inches of memory foam on the top and is super comfy. We bought it the week I moved in (almost 2 yrs ago) because he only had a double and that did NOT work. Way too small for us...I'm jealous of all you who can cozy up and sleep well together in a small bed. He or I would fall off the bed! :)

We're like Ms. Gopher...we have slept in beds larger than our trusty old dorm-issue Twin XL only a handful of times, and each time it was like WHOAMYGODLUXURY.  I am literally counting down the days till we get a bigger bed, as we're not living in a dorm next year.  Twins are sooo small for two somewhat tall (I'm 5'8", he's 6') people!  When we but our own bed for our apartment, it'll probable be a queen, because I doubt we'll be able to fit a king into whatever space we'll be living in at first.  But if we could fit a King, I'd be totally down.  We usually sleep right next to each other, but I would LOVE to have space to stretch out...and do other things. ;)  I don't blame anyone for becoming accustomed to a large sized bed!  I know my parents personally upgraded to a king from a queen about ten years ago, maybe a bit more, and could never go back.  They're overweight now, which has something to do with it, but they weren't overweight when they upgraded, they were just looking for more space.

I always tell him "I got the queen when I was sleeping alone...;)" which is true! so I can understand your parents wanting a king..

We're getting a King and I'm soooooooooooooooooooo excited.  We have our cuddle times, but we are both blanket hogs (so we need two blankets) and I like to build a 'pillow wall' around myself, so a king will be much loved in our house.

This is a serious issue in our house. My parents have always been pro queen sized beds. They don't see the need for a larger bed + they like to cuddle. In fact, they actually hate kings. Whenever they've slept in them they've said it was "too big" and they didn't even know they were sleeping in the same bed.

Now my FI thinks we MUST have a king. And of course, being raised like a proper king-sized bed fearing girl (lol) I have to disagree. Whenever we pass by the mattresses in department stores we always start arguing about it. People laugh. We laugh. Then go back to queen vs. king.
