Where did you look?  None of the places we looked gave us a backless option.  Typically the backless ones are for prom rentals (cheaper).

They’re usually backless because it’s cheaper, cooler and far easier to obtain a proper fit….

@BlakeyD:  If he wants a back, I’d call the place he got it from and ask if they have any.  I am surprised they didn’t tell him or give him an option when he ordered the tux.

The backless waistcoat (vest) was invented in a day and age when it was unthinkable for a man to remove his jacket or coat at a formal event.  It was primarily for comfort, as a full-backed waistcoat would be much hotter.  As a PP said, it also allows it to be adjustable, and get a close fit, so off the peg options could fit a wider range of body types.

In general, a gentleman would not remove his jacket when wearing a backless waistcoat.

You should be able to get your choice of backed or backless vests.  Some rental places will tell you that the things they have to rent are the only things available anywhere.  They will also tell you all kinds of things that are simply untrue, because, for the most part, they only know their own stock, and not much about actual style or fashion.  That’s not true of everywhere, of course, but it’s common.  So, if you ever feel like you’re not being given the whole story, or all of the options, or the complete truth, say thank you, and look around elsewhere.  Chances are you can find what you want, and then look at all the options and variables (price, appearance, service, etc.) and then make a choice about what you want to go with.

As an aside, you should also look into liquidators that sell off former rental wear, or cheap formalwear.  There are lots of places online you can buy a tuxedo for much less than you’d think, and then you’re able to have it altered – the fit is going to be revealed in the photos far more than any other characteristic of the suit.
